Can we laser engrave Black Ceramic tiles with the Algolaser Alpha diode laser?

I like to wander craft and hobby stores looking for materials to work with on my lasers. Recently I came across some flat black ceramic tiles while shopping at Michaels. They are the same size as the slate tiles I've use but have a nice flat finish on both sides. I thought I'd bring them home and give them a try in the laser. The tests were not perfect but have some promise as an option for future projects.

Great idea! I picked some up at my local Michael's for practically free because of the coupons they give out. Ran the test grid on my 40W CO2 laser, and at slow speeds (even with moderate power) it's able to blast a small crater into the surface. I ended up using about 60mm/s and 70% power for a bright white engraving that wasn't too deep.

It's good to watch the Michaels coupons but also wander through and look at the clearance items frequently. I've found larger slate tile pieces at 50% off or more and those are good to have on hand for the occasional special request. I do most of my engraving with the diodes now do to the detail and finer control, even though they are slower. But you can definitely do this on a Co2!

Looks like the same focus bar setup as on the xtool d1.

This one is different as it’s spring loaded and comes straight down instead of flipping down in an arc like the xtool. Minor difference but a nice one.

AlgoLaser Alpha 22W vs Ortur Laser Master 3 22W Which one is the best you think?

Both are nice machines, but I think I would give the nod to the Algolaser at this time. They are more active in development of their recent lasers and I like the Algolaser module a bit better than the Ortur module.

The Algolaser Alpha is a 22w diode laser.

I do like the way they took detail and the clean back. May have to have a go at them. One thing I've found is the quartzite and other kitchen backsplash tiles at the big box lumber stores seem to engrave nicely and you can get some depth of cut with a higher powered diode laser

I’ll have to look around and see what’s available. I do like the finished look of these tiles but they do cost more than the bathroom and kitchen tiles.
