I think what needs to happen first is that we create an intelligence more advanced than us, whether hybrid-human or fully AI. Then hopefully that intelligence can help everyone understand better perspectives on reality and solve all the destructive BS we cause. It'll also give us new understanding on whether or not we should be immortal.

Liked this video - thanks for sharing it. My preference in communicating this is to leave out the "forever" or "immortality" references, and just stick with terms like; - health extension - healthy life extension - age reversal / rejuvenation (We will never know (by definition) if 'forever' is possible.) Also, "forever" I believe makes it immediately fantasy-like speculation. Meanwhile, to really have progress in extending healthy lifespans, there needs to be more direct funding of anti-aging research. However, we also need a broader public awareness that science is soon up to the task - which this kind of video can help with. Good show!
@CadellLast11 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, I agree with most of your constructive criticisms. However, naming the video "Can We Live Forever?" was used to reflect a cultural desire/dream (as reflected in many of our myths and religious beliefs about the "after life" being a realm divorced from time). When I discuss the science I do make a point to classify our current goals as "radical life extension" which is what a few of my colleagues in this field prefer to call it. And of course I am a massive advocate for anti-aging research funding. Now that Google is interested in radical life extension we should expect to see a lot more funding directed towards it (at least I hope). Thanks for your thoughtful feedback!

Most transhumanists seem to believe our minds are rational machines that can be replicated perfectly in a computer. However reality (as always) is a lot fuzzier. It'd be like rewriting a gigantic legacy codebase while guaranteeing not only the same interface but the exact same proportions in timing, resource usage and so on as well as replicating all the non-obvious bugs and mistakes. It's hard enough to "fix" brain chemistry as it is (all drugs have unwanted side-effects). The other problem is that we simply haven't evolved to deal with astronomic or geological timescales, much less the infinite. Our brains can deal with medium sized things moving at medium speeds for medium timescales. It's not something you can fix by flipping a switch or bumping up a variable - even if our lives would simply be slowed down by several orders of magnitudes, you're just changing the scale, you're not extending it infinitely. We don't strive for eternal life, we're just afraid of aging, dying and eventually ceasing to exist. There's no way to live infinitely in a finite universe. Even if we could draw out our life to the extreme (and somehow avoid diseases, starvation, accidents or any of the other myriads of things that could end our lives at a whim), we still couldn't live past the heat death of the universe or the Big Rip or any of the other theorized ultimate fates of the universe. Sure, even astronomical timescales would be an incredible extension of our lifetimes, but you don't need to live forever to get bored with living. In much of our cultural heritage eternal life is not a blessing but a curse. Even if you wouldn't have to watch everybody else die (because we somehow *universally* "fixed death" or just happen to be elitist sociopaths) life would like get very tedious after a while. Like Hitchens described the Christian idea of heaven: you're at a party, you're not allowed to ever leave and the host demands you have a great time. Scarcity creates value. If lifetime becomes infinite, it will quickly depreciate in value. "I want to live forever" is as naive a wish as "I want to have {insert your favourite dish} for every meal forever". It's ironically shortsighted.
@lnplum10 жыл бұрын
Besides, there's no point in fearing death. When we're dead, we're done with fearing things anyway. What we're afraid of is dying - physically, mentally and conceptually - of running out of time and the capability to make use of it, but also of being forgotten and not having left a mark in history (or at least other people's lives) that could outlive our selves.

@lnplum10 жыл бұрын
bee14ish I'm not sure why transhumanists are so afraid of ceasing to exist. I think that's pretty infantile. Yes, life extension is awesome and I hope we'll all be able to live comfortably well past 100 within the next generation or two. It'd be great if we could effectively counter-act the effects of ageing and bodily decay. But transhumanism isn't necessarily the answer, in fact I'd argue it may not even be an answer to the right question. There's a difference between wishing for the singularity and merely wishing to increase the number of days we have (and drastically increase the number of those ones that are pleasant). That said, my point about eternity still stands. You don't *want* to literally live forever. We enjoy visions like transhumanism because of their potential for drastic changes. But achieving immortality means the elimination of change. Given sufficient time, any activity becomes a drag. The first couple of eons might still be fun, but then all you have left is ennui -- for all eternity.

The only problem that I see is that if we replace most of our body we will no longer be human.
@weedmastersr10 жыл бұрын
Taino Power But we don't have to replace most of our body. This video is just being stupid. Through genetic and stem cell biotech we can rejuvenate our organs(including the brain which is also an organ), while maintaining our bodies as they are now. Also, nanotech doesn't necessarily mean having the internet in our brain as this stupid video suggests, but more like atom sized robots working to fix our cells and regenerate our bodies and minds. You wouldn't even have to notice they're there. And they would have no interference with your mind or body. So we could remain human.
@Gitohandro9 жыл бұрын
+Taino Power well to be honest what really makes us human is just our memories... Cause our cells constantly die and new ones are made that are copies so technically I'm not the same person I was last year I just share that person's memories

+Protector of the Republic well if you think of a human being as a car, some cars are made of steel but newer more expensive cars usually have carbon fiber, in the same sense Maybe our soft mushy body lacks the physical properties to last indefinitely eg maybe with all the meds we'd only reach 200 max but going beyond would require replacing our organs with new material. Kinda like how it's physically impossible for animals to talk because they don't have vocal cords so the sounds they can make are limited because we have that extra organ or whatever it is.

I do have two suggestions for future videos: The narration needs to be paced slowly enough that viewers unfamiliar with the material can follow the logical chains being presented. I'd hate to be the one who couldn't afford such remedies. To die knowing that I'm to poor to live sounds like a hypothetical nightmare. One embrace to death is knowing it's natural and everyone has to do it. For every action there's an equal or opposite reaction- if the stress of dying of old age disappears, I can only speculate on the intensity of dying in a freak accident; "if I just stay in this padded room for eternity, I can live forever."
@dbaseII11 жыл бұрын
I suspect that we will dream forever about eternity. An integral part of the design of the human body, a design which we barely understand, let alone could replicate, is "planned obsolescence." I suspect to overcome that which is firmly integrated in the design is "the impossible dream".

if we replace our parts will out body reject them? Will we have fantam pains? What happens during a solar event? I love the idea of radical life extension, I just don't think our current way we view technology is going to offer that. Growing Replacement Parts yes, but parts that require the use of electric power is where I see all of this falling short. We would need to create a sustainable "bio"system, were our body create and use the energy needed to power these mechanical replacement parts. Fun to think about! and My current goal is to live to 122+, that would mean I lived in the 20th. 21st and the 22nd century. cheers

Thanks for such a thoughtful reply! So far all evidence suggests that our body will not reject non-biological technology. If you want to learn more about this a great example can be found in the experiments done by cyberneticist Kevin Warwick. Also, there are several great talks with neuroscientists about preliminary experiments with brain-interface technology. I think the consensus is that biology integrates these technologies quite quickly and without complication. I hope to see you in the 22nd century!

The cultural evolution is allowing us to create amazing tools, and for the first time these new tools and technologies are giving us control of our own evolution process. Many transhumanists and futurist may try to relate this to the 2045 singularity, but I am referring more toward an evolution timespan rather than a defining point in history. What I mean by technological driven evolution is a radical change to the human condition via 21st century technologies like Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Virtual Reality, Cognitive Enhancements, Robotics and Advance Artificial Intelligence. A combination of these technologies will allow homo sapiens to change so dramatically that we cannot label them as such. Instead I suggest we group such altered humans as Techno Sapiens and no longer belong to the Homo Genus classification. Techno Sapiens, like homo genus will be the parent tree classification where hundreds and possibly thousands of techno-Sapiens subspecies will be engineered. As Techno Sapiens could be the scientific classification, most people will probably use “Post-human” as the nickname. This Technological driven Evolution has actually already begun when humans were able to discover and change their DNA genome. The introduction of computers, networking and robotics is part of the process as well. We are at a defining point in history where the culture evolution is ending and the technological evolution is starting. Not like the other periods of change in human history, this one will be very disruptive in not only technological but more on the sociological side. Unfortunately, the culture evolution created some deep rooted culture baggage. Classical religion, infrastructure, laws, politics, economics including traditional culture and ethics may not work well in this next evolution. I like to stress that due to the radical technological changes that will occur, every facet of human life that the culture evolution created will be affected. The major root of such abruption and the major challenge us humans will need to deal with is our current model of our world and how we view ourselves.

Even if we can live forever, humanity isn't ready for immortality. Our current mindset revolves around death; go to school so you can get a job so you can make money so you can retire so you can die. If we gain immortality, we need a whole new mindset, a whole new way of looking at the world. Immortality needs a whole new way of thinking, and we don't have that yet. We might have the hardware for it, but we don't have the software, or the drivers, for it.

Things to keep in mind: Stem-cells are already viable for radical life extension (reversion of ageing, slowing down if not downright stopping it). Nanorobots were invented over 20 years ago. Both could be used today for just this very thing - we have the knowledge, the technology and resources to do it in abundance. Commercial tech is the bottom of the barrel and is 0 indication of what can be readily achieved when technology is used for benefit of everyone (instead of the select few) - 'cost efficiency' and 'money' have nothing to do with our technological ability to churn out something in sustainable abundance for everyone (with no damage to the planet I might add). The technology itself already exists.

I don't think it's a matter of if we can but if we should. Suppose all humans are immortal, there would no need to reproduce. It may become a lost ability. If we were to face a time where our numbers diminish, we would be unable to produce healthy new individuals. And if we keep reproducing then our numbers will get too large for the planet(a challenge we face today). I think we haven't be able to gain immortality for a reason. Expanding our life span be just be our downfall.

The idea that man can extend his life as far as he chooses is nothing but futility. THE WORD OF GOD SAYS, MAN WILL NOT LIVE PAST 120 YRS. Genesis 6:3 and the LORD said" MY SPIRIT shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh: yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years. Now our spirit and soul will live for eternity, The question we need to ask ourselves is where will we spend eternity? THE WORD OF GOD SAYS "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of GOD is eternal life in CHRIST JESUS our LORD". ROMANS 6:23. It also says, For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and looses his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? MATTHEW 16:26. These are the things we need to be focused on. These will determine our eternal destiny HEAVEN OR HELL. JESUS CHRIST came to show us the right way to live our lives and be a blessing in others lives instead of a curse. How to be a lover and not a hater of others. He also came to pay the price for our sins, which was death on the cross. HE offers each and everyone of us a second chance. An opportunity to wipe the slate clean again, so to speak. BORN AGAIN! It is the only way to get into Heaven. JESUS SAID" unless one is born of water and the SPIRIT, he cannot enter the kingdom of GOD, JOHN 3:5. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTAN QUESTION OF YOUR LIFE, WHERE WILL YOU SPEND ETERNITY? ROMANS10:9-10. BE BLEST!

That didn't answer the question at all. It covered how to indefinitely extend the human lifespan, but didn't even consider that the universe has a expiration date unless we can somehow rewind entropy. Unless we can do that, we'll never manage "forever forever", just what seems to be forever from our limited perspective.

Given humanity's predisposed fear of death, it's inevitable that we won't stop trying until we exceed in gaining some semblance of immortality of great longevity. However we must expect radical social changes when this happens, and hope that we have the means to support a larger human base - which means we need to advance our current technologies rapidly, or gain the ability to form extraterrestrial colonies.
@CadellLast11 жыл бұрын
Well said, couldn't agree more. The social changes would be truly profound and we would definitely need massive technological innovation and energy exploitation techniques to support higher population sizes. But in a world with artificial intelligence those achievements may not be massive problems.
@ForwardSlashReality11 жыл бұрын
Cadell Last I think we have to hope that a sudden advance in one field doesn't cause us to start lagging behind in the other fields in any detrimental way, and that technology can keep up with the growing needs
@CadellLast11 жыл бұрын
ForwardSlashReality most definitely. However, IMO I should suspect that a massive advance in one field that necessitated further advance in an underdeveloped field would potentially cause a punctuated equilibrium-like burst of innovation in the field in question. Or at least that would be required. The two broad functions to watch out for over the next 50 years are energy (renewables) and communications (A.I., Internet). Hopefully they evolve symbiotically. Both lay the groundwork for a global civilization.
@ForwardSlashReality11 жыл бұрын
Would have to watch out for abuse of the superior technology before the other fields had their chance to be brought back up to par with it. well here is my thoughts, with every advancement or breakthrough in science there are society implications to consider. Also there are new advances in other parts of science due to other advances in other parts. So in my opinion it is very difficult to predict anything. example: lets say we manage to live up to 800 years with genetic repair, then on that life span philosophy of life might change and people want to pursuit death or because the progress of knowledge per individual will advance we might discover how to jump dimensions. Finally when computing power reaches crazy thresholds that will eventually solve any human problem right???

Interesting concept, but is it really a good idea? Any new technology like this would be tremendously expensive and life extension may not be the best use of humanity's limited resources. Life expectancy has increased dramatically in recent years and most or all of this has been due to improvements in public health and other similar approaches benefitting masses of people. However the expense of developing life extension technology would mean that its benefits, at least initially,would be limited to the few who could afford it. Shouldn't we be using society's resources to develop basic technologies whose benefits are widely distributed rather than on esoteric approaches where the advantages would be much more limited?

Great thought Gurleen Kang! I like to think that in a future where humans and technology have integrated completely with each other, that by that time reproduction will have become obsolete on the purely biological level. It is a very scary thought to think that if this scenario were to be real, and something were to critically damage our technological way of reproducing, while at the same time, something critically damaged our abilities to remain immortal and we actually started to die off so much that it became an absolute priority to reproduce, how would we? Could we? And another thought! What could cause that much damage to such an advanced civilization? I also like to think that in order to reach such an advanced state, that we would have to peacefully,globally unite. So with this in mind can we safely count out that the damage could be the result of an inside job? An undetected and instantly catastrophic mutinous act? Maybe our united technological civilization leaves our solar system altogether and we encounter beings that know where to strike us where it stings? The more we advanced the stranger our problems could become. Maybe it's not worth it. But then again...maybe it is!

You cannot find eternity on earth/universe. When the stars die you involuntarily die even if you technology.If you replace your self with technology then that is not you, that you is not human. right?

Even if it were possible to transfer 'consciousness' into an artificial carrier (which I doubt), it wouldn't be 'you', it would be another 'you'. So the original 'you' would still die. As for the 'new you' - I imagine entropy would gradually kick in, or else huge amounts of energy would be required to keep 'you' going and in running order - and for what?! Still, innovation is borne of dreams, so dream away.

Very good videos! But this is completely unnecessary I think. I believe that eternity is here and everywhere. We all are eternal spirits. It´s only the form of matter that changes. It´s so useless to dream about living forever. BTW What does forever mean?

Personally, even if it did prove to be possibly, I would always disagree with it being put into practice, at least in most cases, as it would also result in dramatic increase in population, with people not dying, as well as remaining at a stage where reproduction would stay possible for people. This, as well as the procedures themselves would increase consumption of fossil fuels and increase the speed at which global warming is occurring. Anyhow, it would probably only be available to a select few, the richest in society. Which does lead to the question, would you really want to live forever? It'd mean possibly having to leave your loved ones behind, watching people you hold dear age and die without you, along with the strengthening sense of detachment from your body, which would become less and less yours as time goes by.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Who let you in here?!. I am curious. When you say you "disagree with it being put into practice, at least in most cases..." what sort of case would agree with? I have similar concerns about where our population would be and how it would be maintained by the time technological possibilities like this could be in effect on a global scale (or maybe even... an interplanetary scale?! muahaha!). While I do think that a technological reproduction system would become the norm, I do wonder what happens with in a society that might still be able to biologically reproduce. I also think that by the time these possibilities are implemented on a global/interplanetary scale a new energy source, perhaps solar, maybe wind, maybe a combination of many, would have absolutely ended the need/desire for fossil fuels. And with the end of fossil fuels as the primary energy source, our economy would take a dramatic shift! Hopefully towards equalization! I agree with you that if a time comes where the ability to live for ever is possible, than losing someone you love to death COULD be a very hard thing to deal with. Perhaps that loved one was lost on the brink of the technological shift? Maybe they would lose their biological and technological life in a fatal futuristic accident? No matter how it would occur, in a time where we could live forever, how society would operate with the loss of someone on a biological and technological aspect is a very interesting thought. Something else I wonder is if a sense of detachment from you body would necessarily be a bad thing? The idea of the technological and biological integration is so that your experience with life and the world is enhanced. You could hear better, smell better, see better, feel better, and with advancements with mapping the brain, you could think better! Perhaps with all the better possibilities, we would welcome the integration!

how can you say any of that will occur? as we develop live extension, advances will come in the field of energy as well... who is to say we won't add a nice little feature to our skin to absorb the sun, so we don't even need resources? predicting the social implications of something so radical and down the line that you really can't agree or disagree at this point.... we won't see this technology for 50+ years minimum, as someone whose life goal is to develop immortality (and has been since I was a young child). also, this video is framing the technology (mostly) wrong IMO... it will obviously require genomics/genetics, but even more so it will involve computational design and redesign of our cells rather than nanotechnology/robotics, per se.... I don't think we will scale down robotics as quickly as we will be able to design living cells to do what we want.. but either way I think the latter is optimal in the end. I also don't believe the aging brain will be as bad of an issue as some foresee, as our brains do have stem cell niches we can access and thus regenerate tissue with relatively easy (assuming our systems are in place). I believe the main issue will be how people feel when all this is in place. Will they become crazy? Power corrupted? Will they just be constantly feeling high on nothing? Will their mind be connected to their regulatory systems/cells? Etc., etc. What is the potential for people to hack biology at this point? Will other people be able to reprogram your brain directly? What about become too powerful or dangerous with self-produced modifications? Could someone create a mega virus or will our immune systems be too powerful / networked? I could go on for days... but I think my main point is that we have no clue what spectrum of technologies will exist in the future anymore, and I don't think previously formed prediction models hold as much value these days because of the nature of technological growth in the modern world. I think if we had one giant country that had just the goal to achieve this.... maybe, just maybe, we could do it (even with crazy computers)... but the way society is today... its going to take a miracle (mostly to convince religious nuts that this is just another step in medicine, and the most important thing we can do as a species)
@orioncorgard711110 жыл бұрын
stackered Ray Kurzweil uses Moore's law along with current cultural and technological trends to predict the future. He predicts robots with the equivalent of human intelligence around 2029. I'd give it a year slack just in case but this is what he does for a living. He'll tell you that 2045 is just an estimate for computers billions of times more powerful than the human brain, because no one really knows what will happen in the 5-10 years after 2029 that is the technological singularity. This supports your argument in every way except the 50 year minimum for life extending technologies. It also says how much we need to clean up our act NOW (referring to religious nuts, and major negitives in the human condition like poverty and hunger) and not 50-60 years from now. We also need to revamp our current education system (especially in the U.S.) because they don't prepare children for this kind of rapid change.

Whether it's possible or not to live forever, it doesn't mean we should pursue immortality. My own opinion is that, yeah it's cool to think you could live for a long time and see many amazing things, I wouldn't want my own body to be replaced with robotic parts. Not do I think anyone should unless it's truly necessary. I just want to live top be around 80 and take care of myself the way I should and live a good full life. Never ending seems a bit pointless to me.

Some people would go ahead and do 'adventure' to protect their god and get it respected the other deny even its existence. Both don't know God . why? because the former doesn't know god, and is fighting with its own self (god does not need protection) and later doesn't know god and believes in its own thoughts? Right? thanks.

Will we have radical life extension?? If you ask that more specifically it can be answered. Am I going to have radical life extension? For that I have a few question. What is your income bracket? What is your social Class (Yes Class Still matters to those who run this world). Lastly are you likely to pose a threat at any point in your life to the powers that be.... If you can answer all of those as follows. 1: Money is no issue how much do you want.. 2. Accepted or Noble 3.No I am the powers that be. Then my answer to you is yes if you cannot answer any of those correctly the answer is only to the point at which you are no longer productively useful. IE when your cost of maintenance is higher than the profit you bring to another. So for everyone reading this post no you will never see it used on you or your kind. You will become the subclass of human unable to afford the spoken of advancements. If you don't like it, rise up now to change it before you are truly less than those who rule you.

Death is a law of nature. To conquer it is not impossible. But, you need to find the right way through the right literature - that is the manual of Creation "VEDAS". We may extend our years but what is the use is today's society is filled more with fear and anxiety. That means more years of fear and anxiety. So, its not a desirable thing to do. Ultimately we have to face death and leave this body taking another one. Eternity already is there with us but we have not tried to understand on which platform. Our research and intelligence is still far from that platform of spirit.

It may become possible but perhaps not plausible. Besides from the huge amount of money for any artificial limbs what would a wireless brain cost. Plus we will fund the research, Medicare is already loseing out in the budget. Guess what we need is a Tony Stark type millionaire to get things rolling.

I.. I don't even know where to start.. WHO wants to live any LONGER??? Certainly not ME!!! In any condition, I just don't get it. In the video, it vaguely refers to how the brain could continue to advance, and I actually feel like that in a metaphorical way, Bear with me: what if you, your brain, your advanced understanding (whatever it might be ) can actually happen, and say, you expanded your conscientious far beyond what we can imagine, ok.? Then imagine you're stuck in a world with people who are SO FAR BEHIND, people who have no concept of your understanding, your wisdom, and all you could do is watch these ignorant beings act as they are capable, insisting war is the only way to get peace, that greed is good, that toxic chemicals 'cant't be too bad, cuz look at how good they work, etc, etc... Don't you see?? Thats what every day of my life has been for 35 years. These are not my people, and this is not my time.

In response to the "eternal dead corpse remark" I would say I don't believe that happens either. I think our spirit moves on to other dimensions and that's what I'm looking forward to. In other words I think we go on to many more dimensions and planes of existence to learn and explore. Its obvious that human beings are limited by our species in terms of how far we can mature and progress. Right now we have far more technology than we can handle and we don't use the caution we should- anyone remember what happened to the atomic bomb?? You can't make a 14 year old 47 overnight. You have to let him grow and mature to that point. And maybe he's never going to be able to outgrow the vices of man such as greed, envy, etc. -- unless of course he's morphed into some non human form. We have had very few Saints in our history.
