Great video! It brought back memories of my family's Silverton 392 that we had in the early 2000s. One of the best memories was a family trip where we left a harbor near Chicago crossed Lake Michigan into Lake Huron, then through the Soo Locks in St Marie, MI into Lake Superior, and ending up in the Apostle Islands near Bayfield, WI. Thanks for bringing back such great memory of the Silverton.

Little fact. The halon system is nice. Must remember that although halon itself is not poisonous, the chemicals left over after it’s extinguished a fire are. So if you do go down after you’ve put out a fire have oxygen with you. (It’s not really poison as much as carbon monoxide I think). Also that’s halon 502 I think. Newer generations of halon may have fixed that issue. Great video!

In your opinions which boat you looked at is the best for build quality and reliability? This is with any maintenance being done regularly. Silverton seems to be a more value driven boat. How is its build quality?

We are interested in buying a 40' power boat for outings in outings in Puget Sound. 40' seems like a good size to take my wife, me and one of one of our married adult kids on a several day get away several times per year. With your experience, it would be interesting to get your feedback on: Can you buy a reliable boat for $100,000 or less? What are essential things that a boat should have when we purchase or upgrade it? What is a good way to buy a boat like this? How do you go from no boat skills to enough skills to feel comfortable taking the boat out for your first excursion?
@BoatingJourney3 жыл бұрын
Hi Leo. Great questions! Can you learn on a 40'? Well we met a guy this weekend who bought a 4087 as his first, but he also drove a caterpillar for a living. We do recommend taking a power squadron course. Yes, you can find a 40' under $100k, but it might need work. Diesel engines last up to 5000 hours or way more, compared to gas, which only last about 700 hours. So when you look at an older boat, definitely get diesels. We had our broker spend a little time, but not enough. Check out our first video and blog post about it. Good luck!

If only it had a spot for a stackable washer / dryer this would be the perfect live aboard.
@BoatingJourney3 жыл бұрын

@dannelson85563 жыл бұрын
washer and dryer LOL why bother moving onto a boat, I had been the the panama canal a dozen times before I turned 20, sailed to Easter Island and Argentina when I was 22, lived and cruised aboard a boat for over 20 years and I never had a washer and dryer. These people aren't boaters and they aren't looking for a boat they are landlubber meaning looking for a floating RV. this boat is nothing more than a floating RV and built about as well, it's not a real boat as it couldn't handle anything other than fair weather, the single helm tells you that. No lower helm station means that you are stuck on a fly bridge regardless of the weather and that sucks big time, when the weather turns the last place you want to be is on the fly bridge as every movement of the boat is amplified exponentially meaning you're going to be getting tossed around like a rag doll up there. when I look at a boat, I can care less about something like a washer and dryer I want to make sure that the boat will keep me alive if the weather turns bad.

What are the monthly expenses for living on a boat?
@BoatingJourney2 жыл бұрын
Every boat is different. You do have to pay moorage, mortgage, insurance, maintenance, repairs, fuel, etc. Depending on the size of your vessel and the particular marina, your costs will vary.

Why not buy a REAL housebot= 60 feet by 14 feet or longer? You can buy a bowrider for fishing/fun... You can get the hull for these large HB's fixed for saltwater..cheaply
@BoatingJourney3 жыл бұрын
The houseboats here are on Lake Union and Portage Bay. They are very regulated and it is difficult to find moorage for them. We have MANY permanent houseboats, but they are very expensive too. We like to travel up to Canada and a bowrider won't get us there. Thanks for your feedback!

I have seen several of your videos, this was not your best work. It's nice to hear you narrate and describe the vessel, but please keep in mind that your intent is to show a boat, not the narrator. The narrator should hardly ever be visible - instead show what the narrator is describing, to give a better overview of the boat.
