He won't lose the brakes without turning them. for that he needs to check fluid and seals and possibly cylinder walls for jamming rust. Rusty rotors might be a bit grabby at first, then might and might not pulse. They only need turning if they pulse badly after 1000 miles, focus on assembly lube on pistons and seals. in order to hold fluid and not drag too bad.

The first car I ever owned was a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass S....it was orange (yup, factory paint orange) with a white vinyl top and white vinyl interior. It had a rocket 350 V-8 two barrel, and a TH 350 transmission. Had about 80,000 miles on it when I bought it used in 1979. Had to change out the tires, battery, alternator, belts, hoses, plugs and points, fluids and filters when I bought it. So easy to do yourself on cars back then. Also the brakes redone and bearings and even had to replace a control arm (wrecker yard) and ball joints (JC Whitney catalog) lol. Even though it was only about seven years old then, it was already showing some body rust. Cars back then were so prone to that. I remember putting in a Jensen AM/FM-cassette radio and 3x9 triaxial speakers in the back. Whoo hoo...big shot with that in it. Hello ladies, lol. Yours looks in great shape for its age, and seeing that remote button to open the trunk and the gas cap behind the rear license plate brought back memories.

Dang, that sucker is loaded up with a good number of options! Map light, remote trunk release, front disk brakes, A/C, 350-4bbl with duals? In '72 that was a nicely appointed Cutlass S! About the only thing missing is cruise, tilt wheel, buckets and a floor shifter. Thanks for saving it guys, they are getting hard to come by these days especially one that has had so few owner modifications. The chrome air filter was common and the former owner deserved a spot in heaven for not destroying the dash putting in an aftermarket stereo. Non butchered dashes are getting rare, no one makes them repop and talk about $$$! My 71 is (well, was...now in primer) the same color, same interior, but no vinyl roof, not optioned as well but was an A/C car. I still have mine and am working on restoring it now.

Ok, my very first major car repair was on my 76 Buick Century (the Pace Car Replica) that my Dad whom I thank effusively bought me. The water pump went out, and rather than utilize the warranty I replaced it myself with a Chilton's manual. I still remember how much room I had under the hood compared to todays cars after I removed the shroud and radiator. That shroud makes your fan "ducted" and does exactly what you said, ensures the fan draws air through the radiator (and AC condenser) to make it actually cool the coolant. Great video, those cars are so much easier to work on. I changed an alternator and a CV axle on a couple of Japanese imports in the last few years, made me wish I was about 25% smaller overall with 25% longer arms and fingers.

The manufacturers put all that stuff on there for a reason, otherwise they wouldn't be going through all the trouble of spending all that money to have them engineered, made and put on. Most people think those are there to keep the mud and water off the engine when in reality it's to keep the air confined to the radiator. That's actually very beautiful how you're reviving a vehicle that was obviously such a treasure to someone long ago. Hell I would have asked to keep that picture in the glove box. Gives the vehicle a soul.
@tiporari4 жыл бұрын
Thermostats set lowest temp, not max. Your cooling system determines the upper limit. Setting it too low can keep an engine from reaching proper temp and cause poor mileage, plug fouling and poor performance.
@appealingpit4 жыл бұрын
Tiporari I always put 180 in mine. Especially on hot days not to cold not to hot. In winter still have good heater.
@BenBRockN4 жыл бұрын
That was my issue, 180 thermostat allows the heater to give out good heat in cold mornings but also allows the engine to properly warm up coolant/oil/parts before driving.

@danmackintosh63254 жыл бұрын
@@ViolentKisses87 very true, if it was here in the UK for example it'd probably sit the best part of the next 30 years waiting for someone who can afford to import the vehicle-specific service parts and put fuel in it and upkeep of the underside against salt (and the folk who CAN afford to do such things, sadly rarely bother to :( ) If I had half the money some people round here have, I'd be daily driving something like that.

Man, that engine sounds like a beast! Love it. Really brings back memories of my youth in the '60s and early '70s. I definitely think you should either leave that Jazzercise sticker on there or buy a new reproduction of an old sticker. I can't remember which rock star had a Jazzercise sticker on his guitar but I loved it. Somebody commented that "it's just an Oldsmobile Cutlass, not a muscle car." Well I was there when they came out and I drove them. That 440 is pure muscle. This car could pick up and move fast.

Hey, love the videos. Had to stop turning wrenches a while ago, but your videos remind me of back in the day. Pointer. The accelerator pump issue, there is a plastic insert with a swing and a ball near the acc. Pump. Most likely that was stuck. And that is why even after you replaced the pump it did not work. Also the day you drove it home the delayed start may have been due to the bowl seal caps leaking. Very common on a quadrojet Keep up the great work

Kevin, quick tech tip next time you need to remove those inner wheel seals. Remove the outer bearing then thread the nut back on a few turns, pull the disc off and the inner bearing will stop at the nut removing the seal with it. Easy peasy!

Kevin, I'm one of those old guys that says Quadrajets work good if you know how to set them up right, are you saying that I'm a dumb ass for saying that? It sure sounds like it to me! I want to know if you think a Holley would be ready to go after over 30 years of sitting? I have been buying derelict cars, dragging them in and working them over since the middle 70's and it's been my experience that after a few years of sitting they all need going through No matter what brand they are! But I guess us old guys don't know anything!
