Well, in '77 and '78 I worked for Hertz as a transporter. Hertz back then specialized in Ford; mostly drove LTD II and Thunderbirds, also Grenadas and in 1978 Fairmonts (for some reason never drove Pinto nor Maverick but did drive other makes than Ford. I remember thinking that the Fairmont had the "Mercedes style" side view mirrors (sweep from the A pillar to the door) don't know what you call them but I guess that was the fashion that year. Fairmont was a good honest car, probably what we thought we'd be driving in age of not much gasoline. Got to drive a lot of different cars back then which was kind of the end of one era and beginning of another (I usually put '78-'79 as the divider, when the really full sized cars disappeared (except for luxury cars which got a couple year reprieve)). Good deal that you picked a good one that didn't need much work....good eye for a good deal.

Pardon my Swedenglish! But i recommend that you dont cook your carbs with much cleaning chemicals in the ultrasonic together with high temperature. Just a smudge and not more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit and if you cook it to loong the aluminium surface will change and the air and fuelflow will be changed. So clean it first manually with carbclean and then cook it for maximum 20 minutes in the ultra sonic.
