Personally I just stick welded my cooler to my CPU's IHS, no gaps there. It stays really cool, completely room temperature in fact. Mind you, it doesn't actually do anything anymore. Maybe the grounding clamp was too tight?

it has to be a processor that produces lots of heat or else what's the point? core 2 duo doesn't get hot enough. honestly though a good CPU for this test would be an FX-9590, that CPU gets so hot that it was factory water cooled. 220w TDP with a max core voltage of 2v. that is the processor that started the AMD toaster stereotype.

@@flushroyal970 plenty of higher tdp 775 chips, they get VERY warm when overclocked(tdp can easily be exceeded overclocked). A C2D E8400 can clock past 4ghz and get very toasty. Ive got an OC'd Q9450 on water for my retro PC and you can feel the heat off the rad no problem! In fact old cpus hate overclocking and just make loads of heat haha

IC Diamond is actually 95% diamond by weight if I remember correctly. And can have particles up to 40 microns in it. But when I've looked at it under the microscope I seen nothing bigger than a few micron. Most one or 2.

I'm thinking nickel/zinc anti-sieze compound. It's an oil base with Nickel or zinc dust inside. Seems to me like that would be a good choice. I ended up using graphite on my fanless PC because the point of the PC is running for a decade without needing me to go in and fiddle with it.

Graphite from a pencil mixed in a thick, nearly dry, paste of silicone grease and oil would have won. Diamonds would have worked if the ratio it got mixed at was higher. Not enough thermally conductive material in your mix.

Laping - if done correctly - actually gives you way better surface finish. You can get Ra values of 0,006 with laping while milling will give you 0,6 at its best. (Ra = average difference in height profile in micrometers)

you could try silver paste. They make silver soldering paste for jewelry that might work pretty well. Silver is a great heat conductor.

Last Saturday I made some decent stuff using some grey construction site clay. It's used to keep soil from draining too much. It's pretty much like pottery clay. I dried it, put it in a coffee grinder to powderize it, then mixed it with mineral oil. Both the clay and the oil are nonconductive materials and good thermal conductors. Do not try to mix the clay without powdering it. It is a rocky mess.
