Wally Stearns they’ve done things like that in the past... Upgrading laptops, water cooling them, overclocking them... Pretty much the one thing they haven’t done is stick the laptop motherboard in a desktop case, but there isn’t much extra entertainment value to gain there over what they have done.

Guys, I have request for a video which goes in the “other direction”. Take a Mac Mini water cool it and sacrifice two of its thunderbolts via adapters to convert them to PCI. Use one for storage expansion and one for graphics card. Put all of this in a Lian Li or any other standard PC case. 🙈 Custom water block, custom IO shield both reasons for Alex to use new tools as well. 🥳

@@agentcrm I build GPU rendering workstations, the board I use also has 7 slots, but since with 4 dual slot GPUs all other slots get covered by the GPUs and thus inaccessible and that limits a lot of things. I use the Asus X299 SAGE/10 because it allow to run all GPUs @16X making it more future proof and also has 10Gbe which most other boards don't have and I can't add a PCIe adapter because there is no space

I've done this since 10.4 and was probably the first to try and use TianoCore (booting from a floppy) to boot it the EFI way on a non-EFI AMD. Back then it was already fairly painless to setup using a VM with direct disk access to do the install and install the Chameleon bootloader. Later when Sandy Bridge was released it became dead easy using either Chameleon or Clover, even getting GPU's working. Now with the EFIvolution of Clover, it is equally simple. You just need to generate a correct smbios for your hardware to get iMessage etc working. The smbios info even has control over how the iGPU is used on supported CPU's like my 2600k (maximum VRAM differs between iMac and MacMini) and what power management features get activated at boot. So don't just stick with the VM base that, just seems to work... fix it properly.

And after few weeks of working, THE LTT Hackintosh have reached it's final state, 3 AMD R7's, and a really brilliant cheese grater case style, that actually can be used as a cheese grater for feeding the monster, that is water cooled with water made from cheese.

Love the thumbnail, really tells the goals and has really tempted me to sell my i9 2019 iMac. I saw great prices for empty old Mac Pro cases and depending on how you modify it, I am defo interested. Before the iMac 2019 I have always uses a hackintosh, until apple dumped nvidia support and my screen was straight out of 2008. It seemed like a logical upgrade, but right now, my custobuild temptings have been heavily triggered. Would love to hear about average costs and labour hours to realize this. Thanks for your awesome tech insights guys, Linus and Anthony you are great inspiration sources for me for optimizing and deciding what’s the right value for money, for my workloads. Cheers for that.

I know there's a lot more that goes into the cost of the Mac Pro like the chassis, materials, and proprietary design, but I still think it'd be a fun video to pit a ~$40,000 Windows or Linux machine against the top of the line Mac Pro when it is available. These Hackintosh videos are super interesting, but it'd be fun to see what would happen if you put the emphasis on maximum performance per dollar. How much more performance could you get doing it yourself for the same cost.

TheLaserHive has really great conversion kits for MacPros/PowerMacs to PC builds. I have one from 5 years ago and love what I was able to create with it. I know the motherboard is way way larger than a standard ATX so this s purely a shout out and a "Hey, maybe these folks can help" post.

If you Need i can help, i run 2/3 hackintoshes daily and have had 30 in the past if you. so if you need help pm me or reply You can install nvidia card like gtx 1080 but it isnt native. You can use it with some glitches but you can get it to work. You cant really run radeon vii in cross fire as mac os doesnt work by using them in that way. Also you can fix I message, iFacetime and all of that by using clover configurator and and editing your smbios and setting it right. Also you need to fix power management and overclocking will not unless you are using "opencore" which is a bootloader like clover

It's definitely possible to achieve overclocking using Clover. It's still too early for OpenCore to really be useful without good documentation.

@@rehmanarshad1848 download clover get fakesmc, injectallusb, and voodoops2 and get a dsdt to disable your gtx 9** as it will not work under mac os as I'm guessing its optimas which isnt supported.

Since I assume where comparing the best hackintosh you can buy right now compared to the top of the line Mac Pro at something like $45000 estimated price come fall, I’m not so sure you could build one cheaper with equal specs. It’s possible to build a faster but more expensive hackintosh or slower but cheaper one but for what I heard, Apple’s not selling the Mac Pro with a large margin and so I doubt your going to build a hackintosh version at much if any savings. As to whether whatever you do build will be better, that too subjective. It won’t have the cheese greater look, if you really like that style of case. It won’t have certain other features. Since both machines can run Windows (via boot camp on the Mac Pro), that’s not a advantage for the hackintosh. The hackntosh will have a bit more customization and options hardware wise that the Mac Pro lacks though keep in mind if it’s a hackintosh then it’s running MacOS on it and not every PC accessory/expansion board will have Mac drivers.

@@Charlesb88 there are community drivers, and Intel drivers openly available, nvidia still released mac OS compatible drivers, 99% of sound cards use realtek drivers, and wifi drivers are also available. Then there's third party community made drivers for third party accessories. It's not official or perfect but it's something.

There are no nvidia drivers for Mojave and up, except for very old cards. Most sound cards use realtek but some, particularly on the higher end "gaming" boards will begin to use other things (though you can still work with a lot of them). Wifi basically only works for Broadcom (Intel and Killer for sure don't work). They are correct about expansion boards etc. This is why no one ever recommends sound cards, for instance (also that most people use external dacs anyway).

Define 'better' because specs wise, Apple top end is using Intel's top end CPU so Linus cannot beat Apple on that regard... regardless, that sounds sorta dumb lmao. Custom PCs can be as fully equipped as ever and Apple's products were made as a product. There are design choices that they cannot go through to maintain professionalism. They can't just suddenly decided to make their shit watercooled, add RGB and make everything gamer-like. Mac Pro users won't be looking at such things. And some users or companies will probably have nightmares maintaining out watercooled components.
