This switcher reminds me of my AHM Plymouth switcher which i think is same shell just a different drive system . this is that drive that was used for the trolleys I believe just a challenge to clean etc. Good work getting it going. :)

Very good repair, sick of these annoying bugs (critters) that get in the mechanisms of our model trains. I have been wanting those engines for years in AHM & TYCO. It's a great little puller with all these freight cars it pulled. Mostly a yard switcher but pleased with the performance around the layout. Excellent.

Nice restoration Harrison! If you want to pickup a really cool tool for cleaning locomotive wheels, I highly recommend the Kadee wheel cleaner, it has jumper plugs that clamp on the Rails and you simply touch the brushes to the wheels and it powers the locomotive and cleans the wheels at the same time!
@Narrowgaugefilms3 жыл бұрын
The joy of it is at the time, every Tyco that moved, but wasn't steam had this drivetrain. If it had 8 wheels it was on a swivel and either there were two of them or the other one was an idler. If it was a four-wheel switcher, the body mounted on top. Even the trolley car had this drivetrain! (-a little overpowered!) -that much being said: it ran well and lasted a long time.
@1999Valkyrie2 жыл бұрын
Hello, Harrison...in cases such as this where you cannot access parts but they still require a cleaning, try an aerosol can of automotive carburetor cleaner or brake cleaner. These come with a straw, or tube, that allows you to direct the spray into tight areas. A can should last you a good long time, and they run around $8.

That Japanese engine you fixed last week, I bought a similar one at my flea market Sunday. But this one was battery operated and the motor drives one axle in the back. What's funny about it is when they tooled it for battery instead of a motor with one shaft, they use the same exact two shaft motor and they added a tall button shape on the roof of the engine to hide the other shaft.

Congrats on another successful runner, Harrison. Is it really a TYCO? One would think the company would've marked their name on the underside. 🤔Maybe not. Other companies did use the same mold, but it definitely looks like the one in the TYCO catalogues. Next time, maybe use some of your sister's clear nail polish to coat the exposed metal that was causing the short. Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍
@MattKonsol3 жыл бұрын

SMT - I recall TYCO putting that switcher in a set with a consist of two freight cars & a caboose. I wonder if your Grandmother's Hiawatha steam locomotive uses paint to insulate metal parts from each other. Maybe the pony truck or the rear truck is contacting the body when swinging on curves & causes a short?

There are tiny thin cardboard "boxes" that fit over those side panel ends that insulate them from the rest of the metal chassis.
@michaelriley5650 Жыл бұрын
Where can you get them
@tracynation2820 Жыл бұрын
They are tiny pieces of card that isolate the one side frame electrically from the rest of the frame by inserting the folded piece on the side frame mounting tab and inserting the side frame in its mounting hole. I was able to use two small pieces of Scotch tape on each end of the frame mount when I accidentally lost both of these parts while disassembling my locomotive. 💙 T.E.N.
