The pre-charged (with freon) copper line sets with flared ends, were a game changer in the world of DIY. We use to solder everything, back in the day, and then have to put a vacuum pump on the system. Not anymore. I dont know of any of the mini splits that don't have flared fittings on them now. I get six hundred bucks a piece for installing those things, and I just smile when I come across one that I dont have to evacuate. You did an awesome job on everything. All the way down to the unistrut for mounting the boxes. Anyone else (but an electrician) would have just sunk a post in the ground. I am a licensed master electrician, HVAC and building contractor, and licensed plumber. So when I say you have done well on everything, I know what I'm talking about. Yalls channel is my favorite, of all. Not just for the care you two take in the things you do, but also for the chance to see your family grow. You've still got air and non condesables in the lines and inside unit. It just be evacuated. Yes, I know what I'm talking about, I have a universal refrigeration cert and did industrial and naval ac/r... And I've installed mini splits in my last two houses
@thebeardedone12253 жыл бұрын
@@dodgezilla04 Obviously you do not. The unit has been evacuated in the factory. The lines have been evacuated, charged with freon then sealed. When you screw the lines on, the valve pierces the seal on the last turn. Then you open the valve on the unit, and it sucks the freon into the system. This is the DIY set up, and no, it does NOT have to be evacuated, unless you mess up on installing it. It is designed by engineers to be this way. Its not like a regular system where you install empty lines, then evacuate them.

Great explanation guys, thanks so much. I know it's past the cooling season, but here is something to remember for next season. Comfort in the humid season has more to do with humidity than heat (the actual terms are sensible heat being temperature and latent heat being humidity). So to dry out the house, units running on slow fan speed, will deliver colder air which means there is more dewpoint depression and thus dryer air. So one or two units running slow and steady, will dry better that all of them running fast because they will catch up and shut off and thus stop drying the air. This leads to cold and clammy conditions. Also, keeping the doors closed will prevent humidity from streaming in. Dry air will run out an open door just like water will flow. By the way, great idea running the two strings of six panels, nice way to save wire cost & line loss. Regarding your battery stack, if they are frequently at 100% charge, I'm sure that you know that you could use more. Here in my area (Hancock County, West Va.), historically in the winter season, we only get about 12 sunny days a year. Keep this in mind and keep a log of how you do in this coming season (Sunny Days vs 100% Charge). It would be great to know how you can hold up during 3 or 4 cloudy days in a row while using the heat pumps. I have wanted to do this for decades but I'm on the grid and the solar factor here is .31, so it is really hard to justify.
@BethAnn19644 жыл бұрын
Wise words in regard to off grid. There is no right or wrong, it’s a personal preference. What you all are showing is you don’t have to live a pioneer type lifestyle to go green. I think this could be an a more appealing option for a lot of people who don’t necessarily want to rough it.This could take sustainable and “going green” into a whole new direction. Excellent job.

I can relate to cutting angles. There are 17 walls that make up the exterior of the house. Each wall meets at a 21.2 degree angle. Made for interesting cuts on the flooring as it met outside walls that were around 10 and 30 degrees off parallel. Loved seeing what your Solar system was able to do. Thanks for all the data. I'm sure not everyone will understand or appreciate, other than knowing it's cooling your home. Where we live, it's not humid. Night time temps here are in the 50's. We use a whole house fan to bring cool air in during the night and close up the house to maintain the temperature. Currently it's 89 degrees out and 71 inside. I've been thinking of doing mini splits for those rare 90 plus days, as well as for the heating capabilities. Our house is 1500 SF with a full basement. It's always cool and comfortable there as it's super insulated, even under the slab. I've been looking at systems that have one condenser and multiple indoor units. All we really need is one for the great room and possibly one in our bedroom. We've never had to heat the bedroom so it would only be used for cooling there.

Same effect but different way of doing it. Mine is hampered by all the zones must be on the same setting, heat, cool & dehumidify. Dehumidify is the most efficient setting and I have no control over the temp. and the humidity is 30-40 points lower than the outside. I suspect your system does the same but different heat pump per zone means yours is much more flexible than mine. Years of comfort is what you have to put up with and you made a very wise choice. enjoy

Amazing episode I could listen to josh talk about electrical all day long and especially solar. I assume the footers will be coming soon I know you two probably want a break but with the addition of air conditioning the house is done and livable with all the appliances and countertops so enjoying it is a must but is there anything left to do its perfect now.

Yes, they plan to build an additional wing with bedrooms, closets, etc. and more bathrooms.

Thanks for sharing all that detail on your system, it will be interesting to see how it holds up this winter with less sunlight, lower efficiency, etc

I'm not sure they will use air conditioning in the winter.

I am willing to know how do you manage time for the pets, animals, kids, home construction (finishing) home work (cooking, laundry, and general cleaning) and alot of other stuff, and you are just two guys to manage everything....

I have the same question. It's impressive how much they manage to get done. I think it helps that they are both home full time now.

They have crazy work ethic ...I think they also take meat to market and Erin also makes soaps ..... They are up super early and they split chores.....I cannot imagine that any two days are the same ...💞

We are literally non-stop but its just the type of people we are. We are very active and goal driven. It doesn't mean we don't "drop the ball" here and there, we do, but we make up for it when that happens by putting the pedal to the metal and making things happen.

Very nice electrical work! Very clean and tidy. Regarding pulling a vacuum on the line sets, you still need to do that for two reasons. 1.) remove moisture from the evaporator and line set. 2.) test for leaks.

"All that and a bag of chips...", lol. You're dating yourself, Erin :) Also, love the technical minutiae. Watching Josh wire things up is quite satisfying. I admire great work. Love your channel.

My background is electrical design/installation. Built two residential houses. Had my own electrical company. This guy is absolutely one of the best all around electricians and craftsman I've ever seen. And she is just as smart and hard working. Thanks so much for putting together an enertaining but REAL show....can't say enough good things. ..can't help but wonder though how long you think this future is going to last in view of present world conditions and if your able to take time to build a spiritual life for your family....
