Not an expert myself, but I think you are right. It had a combination of problems. The most serious probably being the leaky carb bowl gasket and so much trash in the gas tank. Wow, I must say, had no idea Toro parts were that high. $300.00 for a new carb is enough to make anyone sick and certainly enough to warrant considering a new mower. Thanks for what you do!!

Good video. I have seen multiple problems every so often due to lack of maintenance. Finally the straw that broke the Camel's back happens. I would like to see the key checked in any case. Bad fuel, dirty carb, plug, oil, water in gas, rotton fuel line coming apart and going into the carb, wrong fuel mix in two cycle units, I had one that a mouse chewed the coil wire so it was shorting out every once in a while. A good tune up never hurts. Many thanks.

I worked on a friends 2 year old toro 621r (4 stroke) single stage snowblower, wouldn't start and every now and then would pop/ run for 3 seconds like this one. Cleaned carb, flushed fuel multiple times, but same thing. Also showed spark on the inline tester. Plug looked clean and new but was defective. Installed new plug and it started right up. First and only time I have ran into a defective plug in 10+ years of fixing engines but I guess you never know.

All the things you mentioned, plus normal engine wear (compression should be at or near 120psi for that engine)... if the crank case has even the slightest leak, it won't run properly (the most common leak is at the governor shaft seal, crankshaft seals and the crankcase halves seal) ....I just looked it up in the service manual lol

I think the problem and the only problem was the dirt in the carburetor. No matter what small engine, as long as the spark plug is sparking at the right time, it is doing it’s job. Timing wasn’t an issue at all because in the beginning of the video, it started up and died. It wouldn’t have started at all if the flywheel key was sheered. The gasoline that came out of the fuel line looked very bad for the engine. It was all yellow without any oil, unless if the 2 stroke oil is yellow, which I doubt. And I don’t think just because something is old, it is worn out and should be retired. As long as you have a good quality machine (that isn’t 100% garbage Chineseium) and that you take care of it, it should last longer than your own life. I think it might have been a bit down on compression, I don’t remember for sure from the last video of this awesome mower, but it still sounded fine to me. If I were you, I would just replace the fuel line and the fuel filter, the dirty fuel is the biggest problem. Also $300 for a float-bowl style carburetor like that is fucking insane. I wish I had a 2 stroke mower like that. It’s so awesome that Suzuki made the engine for a Toro. What an amazing piece of equipment.

all very good points. yes the price for the carb was scary insane.

@@HomeGaragechannel Hey my wish came true. I picked one up where the engine sticker said the motor was build in 1997. He was asking $125 and I talked him down to $80 because there is a massive vertical crack on the side of the deck where the grass exits the top. I actually don’t think it’s a huge problem because the crack started and ended, so it’s not like the crack will get bigger overtime. If I fully restore this thing, I’ll get it welded. He didn't have the mulch plug, I ordered one, but he gave me two bags! It ran for a bit when I went to go pick it up, but the pull cord was on it's way out, and the blade was pretty dull. So after replacing the rope, sharpening and balancing the blade, draining the gas and discovering a bit of water actually, and replacing the fuel line and filter for funsies, mine starts up and runs absolutely fantastically! I didn't even have to get the starting fluid!! I must have had better luck than you on this one. This is instantly like my favorite mower in my fleet of 6 now And about a week ago now I think, I went with my friend down into the crackhead part of Seattle to pick up a near-scrap air-cooled inline 4 Yamaha 600cc motorcycle engine stuck inside of a cut up frame, for his really stupid optimistic go kart project, and in the same spot we found a Lawn Boy 8674!!! I told him to hold it for me, I ran and got some cash, and when I got back, the mower fired right up, so the engine is DEFINATELY still good. The dude was asking $20 for each, so $40 for both. What a steal for a F series 2 stroke Lawn Boy! I ordered a blade, blade control cable, and an air filter. It will likely be going as good as my new Recycler I just got a couple of days ago! I hope everything's okay and well, take care!

A new or almost new blade on an old mower with kickback or related issues, can be a good indicator of a sheared key problem. The blade got bent, replaced, mower still wouldn’t run right and went to the curb. I’ve not run across a Suzuki powered mower.
@HomeGaragechannel4 жыл бұрын
actually i put the blade on a year ago. I did check the key then just to make sure and it was good so i'm pretty confident that the key is okay since the blade is in great shape.

A mower from 2002 being old, are you joking?! These are very good engines and it´s definitely worth saveing as many of them as possible. Also, a carb isn´t something that you "just" replace, if anything you use an OEM rebuild kit after a bath in an ultrasonic cleaner or removing corrosion from the inside. Cheap knock off aftermarket carbs are a no go, as they are usually of awful quality. Putting that diry air filter box and element I would consider a crime though. Otherwise, good job!
