Would this video exist if worm castings couldn't?
Start your own organic hydroponic microgreens with premium, aged worm castings from VermisTerra. Details are available at these links:

Use coupon code "Jeb" to help support the channel. I was compensated for making this demo.
The use of worm casting tea in this video was experimental. The product is intended to be used on established plants growing in media or soil.
Half gallon Pyrex storage dishes with "snap" lids were used to suspend a window screen over 4 pounds (1.8kg) tap water. Six containers were prepared:
Water Only
Water and 57g worm casting tea (added on day 1)
Water and 57g worm casting tea (added on day 4)
Water and 20g worm castings
Water and 20g worm castings and 57g worm casting tea (added on day 1)
Water and 20g worm castings and 57g worm casting tea (added on day 4)
For each container, 10g French Breakfast radish seeds were soaked for 1 minute in .3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution for one minute. The seeds were drained (not rinsed) and spread on the screen.
Light was excluded from the seeds until day 4.
The tea appears to inhibit germination (possibly from low PH).
Starting on day 4, the plants were grown under 6500k high output T5 fluorescent lights. A fan nearby circulated air. Temps were kept in the mid 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit. Humidity was kept between 25 and 40 percent.
Around day seven, a noticeable smell developed. The containers with tea had an ammonia smell and the containers with castings had more of an earthy smell. The water-only container had the least smell. It could be described as a mildly musky plant smell.
No mold was observed in any of the containers.
The water-only microgreens had a strong radish flavor and a slightly fibrous consistency. The worm casting microgreens had a lush texture, but were slightly milder, possibly due to the pink pigment developing less from the stems being shaded by from the thick leaf canopy.
Harvest Results
4g - Water and 57g worm casting tea (added on day 1)
16g - Water Only
19g - Water and 57g worm casting tea (added on day 4)
38g - Water and 20g worm castings and 57g worm casting tea (added on day 1)
46g - Water and 20g worm castings
51g - Water and 20g worm castings and 57g worm casting tea (added on day 4)
Adding worm casting tea on day one reduced yield by 17 to 75 percent
Adding worm casting tea on day four increased yield by 11 to 19 percent
Adding worm castings increased yield by 170 to 190 percent

That there anything but wonderful. We are in at the ground floor of booming industry. Image how much greener and healthy all plant life will be. Make some worm tea and feed your lawn and plants with it. Amazing and profitable. So many many wonderful ideas.

@@JebGardener hey jeb have you heard of a material called nylar or mylar (not sure which one) its like a plastic foil similar to how normal aluminium or tin foil would be used for light and heat reflections, its meant to be about 40-50% better in reflecting actual light. not sure on pricing but would be good to see you try it out instead if its a somewhat cheap solution. i found this out by growing other plants.

@@JebGardener you should get you some azos, mykos, or kangaroots (beneficial bacteria and rhizo) will help give you more prolific growth and yields. The azos is a natural nitrogen fixing bacteria (pulls nutrients from the air). Rapid start from general hydroponics (willow bark) is amazing for root growth as well. With your worm castings I would mix in some kelp/sea weed. And I noticed you do not ph your water, if using distilled your 7.0 or so and tap water even higher, drop it to 5.5 to 6.3 and you will get much faster growth and higher mineral (brix sugar levels) in your plants.

@@JebGardener Yeah, my thoughts with organics in non-aerated water. It can go anaerobic fairly quickly. I've not had much luck with it. I'll bet if you added air, and keep the seed from being submerged in the beginning, you'd have much better results even with organics.

It surprisingly difficult to stretch a homemade screen over a frame. Yeah i tried to counter the drooping screen with the rigid metal screen, but that one had the reverse problem. The screen should probably rest on a rigid structure and the stuff could be grown in giant vats.

@@JebGardener I switched from vinyl screen to food-grade silicone mesh used as dehydrator sheets. It floats on water until it gets too heavy from plant weight. It might help, but it's flexible. A stiff dehydrator mesh might be just what you need in this case. Both would food grade. Personally, however, I'd go with hydro nutes over organics for consumption. Congrats on your channel. You're really entertaining.

I am curious about printing starter pots for the various propagation and other things I do with plants as an affordable option. wonder if this would be applicable here as well. I know this experiment was about finding an all natural way to do it and finding out if worm castings could be put in water to be used as some semblance of a hydroponic solution, but i have 2 things i wish you included: 1 i wish you talked a little about the price compared to hydroponic nutrients 2. i sort of wish you compared the growth to hydroponic nutrients. I guess hydro wouldve won? But right... i mean in theory, if the apocalypse happened, i could maybe figure out how to make worm castings. figuring out how to make hydroponic nutrients seems much harder. So yeah. and, like im sure many people have felt, its always been knocking around in the back of my head that in principle i should be able to just put some dirt/compost in water and the plant should be able to live on that, seeing as it can live in water or it can live in dirt, and you need to add nutrients to the water, but the dirt/compost already has the nutrients. So, in principle, why shouldnt i be able to just mix some dirt in to the water. And i do think it does do some things even in hydro, like i think putting a sprinkle of dirt in a container where the roots arent protected from the light, i think that prevents some amount of algae (like a really shitty low dose of hydroguard) but thats a lot of theories on my part. (edit: maybe in one of your videos you mentioned the sprinkle of dirt algae thing and i forgot? not sure. i heard it suggested somewhere though)

The thing is the nutrients in the soil are far more dispersed than adding them concentrated to the water. What makes hydroponics so efficient is that plants don’t have to expend energy building vast root networks to find nutrients and have it easily accessible in abundance allowing for easier and more fruitful growth.

Sprouts are super easy to grow, I usually buy the seeds in bulk, and throw a ton of them on soil once every two days...haven't run out of food since, and still have half a bag. Broccoli, mustard, spinach, etc. Try it some time, it's a smidge more expensive then letting the plants grow out full, bit still cheaper then a super market lol.

I'm a fan of home grown produce and your submissions really help with simplifying how easy it can be to grow in your home even without space for soil, so many people like myself who have lived in apartments for years often feel that they are unable to follow thier heart in trying it out becuase of lack of space or lack of understanding water parameters and technical know how on light exposure and what you illustrate is that sometime experimentation is all youneed to figure out what works. Thank you!!

I am also very curious if you have dabbled much with aeroponics ? vs hydro? Would be really interested to see the difference on yield. Currently working with potato experiments of staggered sowing and harvesting to gauge how many 25gal pots i need to fill for enough to live off.

@@JebGardener I found one guy who was like I am restricted for space to grow. He was running like 10 x 25 gal pots and harvesting 3-9kg per tub with virtually no effort, just leaving an organic soil and rain to do its thing. Though he is also UK based, so there is no shortage of rain lol. I am developing a massive interest for hydro thanks to your channel though. Would you have any recommendations on growing berries using hydro?

Just discovered Jeb today. Love the music! Such elegantly curated pieces, the dramatic highs and lows, the mournful and the joyful passages are LOL hilarious. And required so much extra treadmill time , was forced to double my session today. Jeb, I live with my husband on a 33ft sailboat in San Diego, and I might have to try this with a 5 gallon bucket in the cockpit, or contrive a small enough floating dock.

I find this microgreens thing unsustainable unless you are producing hundreds and hundreds of seeds yourself. Even a simple google search shows how big of a market selling "microgreens" seeds is and I suspect that is the racket behind this whole thing. For a price of a green salad you can buy a seed packet to grow your microgreen salad over few days. Then it's back off to the seed shop to refill your stocks.
@VermisterraEarthwormCastings
@VermisterraEarthwormCastings 5 жыл бұрын
That's a good point, but there are also people living in snowy/ east coast/ cold weather locations where they must truck in produce from warmer states so a salad costs a bit more. Plus micro greens are supposed to be a lot more nutrient dense than regular greens.
@brandtnicholson4532
@brandtnicholson4532 5 жыл бұрын
A salad is like 3-5 dollars for a bag of 2-3 servings. How many seeds could you get for 3-5 dollars?
@thekbshouse
@thekbshouse 5 жыл бұрын
@@brandtnicholson4532 IIRC one seed pack was 2,5$. You can probably grow around two portions with those seeds. Now if you buy some salad seeds and grow them for a month how much more food you recon you have VS eating the first two leafs that sprout? You could even eat some of the leaves and leave the rest of it to flower and produce seeds for the next year. But if you keep eating what sprouts out of the seeds after every few days you are essentially hatching eggs to eat the chicks and then going back to the store to buy more eggs to hatch so you can fill your plates with that sweet chicken dinner. It only makes sense if you are running a seed store or making way more seeds than what you need to grow more seeds.
@thekbshouse
@thekbshouse 5 жыл бұрын
@@VermisterraEarthwormCastings I live in Finland and based my argument around that, so yeah I'm very aware of the snowy livings here. Couple of full grown salads cost slightly more than a seed pack here.
