I wondered about high carbon composting when I did my Hungry Bin setup. If you think about it, leaves fall from the tree and start decomposing, and before you know it the worms move in. Dry leaves are a carbon source, and no one puts a little kitchen waste for them out in the forest, so....

According to Cornell web article worms lay more cocoons when stressed, as cocoons survive worst conditions. But babies hatch under better conditions.

it's easier to tear out the cellophane window before shredding, rather than picking out little pieces one by one. Believe me, I learned the hard way.

Worms also need some grit. I add small amount of sand dirt and ground up egg shells as well as banana peels, potatoes peels etc.
@yopappy59032 жыл бұрын
Also they need protein. I feed corn meal and ground up oats.

I have been using a earth composted for 30 years for garden waste. Last spring I found a ball of red wiggler worms in the bin I don't know how they got in there, I suspect though potting soil. I took the ball and started a bin I started my third bin today. That ball of worms have just exploded. I don't though any food scraps in the garbage any longer. I make fertilizer. Thanks to your videos I have been very successful. Thanks

I also feed corn meal and ground up oats for protein. They need protein for toughness and durability.

Having nearly zero actual vermiculture experience, but a questioning engineer by trade, the odd behavior of the worms concerns me. Are they under stress from the carbon-only diet? If these worms “never” do this, how do you conclude that they’re just really happy? I’m asking honestly, based on the near-zero experience.

Do you have any grit or anything else in your carbon only bins? I see some talking about the worms being stressed. Wouldn’t they be trying to leave the bin if they were stressed?
@flambatious5 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of burying an egg box under the soil. I am new to all this, and the other day scrunched up some toilet rolls and put them inside another toilet roll.. to make a strong tube and burrows that.. thinking the worms would crawl inside it .. like they do corrugated cardboard.. any thoughts on this ? If I put just one toilet roll in alone it just gets squashed !

The Crazy Worm Lady Sorry, that wasn’t a very clear question....I was wondering how long it took the ENC cocoons to hatch out in your little sandwich sized container.
@TheCrazyWormLady5 жыл бұрын
Danelle Howard ohhhh!!! I think within a week I had the first baby but some of the cocoons were further along than others. Usually it takes a cocoon a month or more to hatch after being laid.
