Can you put the castings in the garden in the winter?

Thanks for the tip! I hate picking out worms one at a time. I usually sift out my worm castings but sometimes its just to wet and muddy to sift, so I dry it out in a Rubbermaid tray. I'll now try a different method. It will make sifting less traumatic on my worms. I can say my plants and garden have never been better since I started using worm castings as a soil enhancer.

Hi! I'm green around the ears about all this stuff being new to learning about vermicomposting. Thank you for sharing your journey and advice. I live in suburban area in Torrance CA hardiness zone 10b 5 minutes from ocean. Our soil does not good. I sent soil into lab for analysis. It is nutrient deficient and I believe it is sandy soil after researching soil types online. So Im deep diving this subject and will hit the ground running soon. Will experiment with DIY three 5 gallon bucket system above ground and one DIY in ground system with open holes for worms to come and go. I think they may want to stay because of good food. I asked Uncle Jims about which types of worms would be best. They replied if I am doing in ground then ENC. Seems to make sense given worms can bury themselves to thermalize deeper when things are colder in winter (mild winter temps at night in 40s.) For my above ground bucket, though, Im considering Red Wigglers. Would appreciate any feedback from host and viewers! All the best and thank you!

hey just started following you how did this bin end up I have a bin with huge chucks of cardboard that wasn't done on purpose had a smaller bin and had a full piece on the bottom and the sides of the bin and then I had one in the middle to try to separate the casting over time and then I was having an issue with them trying to escape so I pored it all in to a big tote and ripped up the cardboard pieces and then a few days I checked on it and still trying to escape but then I smelled a mildew smell and I thought it was the cardboard being damp and big pieces and I just went and ripped it all up and it took for ever but seems to have stopped a lot of them trying to jump ship just wondering if this did good but I did over water the cardboard when I was doing it

Not really fair to say the Worm Factory doesn't function as advertised when you've neglected it (and added citrus), though.

The lower the more moisture the more fun for the worms. Found something to try out this morning. With the baropressure to storm, worms naturally rise. That would be a good harvest moment in these stacking bins.

Thank you for making the video. It really helped understand the care and what options I have to improve my worm bin. Can you share the quantities of the dry mix you use and what is a good resource to order worms from? Much appreciated. Keep up the good work!

Which worm bin do you recommend? I started in storage bins but don't like to dig them out so much to harvest. I have lots of food scaps I want to use and also want to be able to harvest compost quickly and more frequently. Also should I get more than just one?

There is a sceintic study that says too much coffee in a worm bin will make them sterile. You might not notice this if you are moving worms from different bins to other bins. Not worth the risk, me thinks!
