I've always said that curves are the most powerful tool when it comes to contrast. There no other tool that's as specific as curves.

The lines in the waveform I guess they represents bandinng in the footage? Am I right? This is more prominent in 8bit footage and lower colour sampling images, such as 4:2:0, I suppose. Fantastic video though, thanks Alex.
