The 5 JBP that I air layered this year were done similar to yours with the removed bark ring, root hormone and sphagnum moss, but instead of just moss, I chopped it up into smaller pieces and combined with perlite for aeration. Also, I did the air layer on last year's growth (much smaller) that ranged from 1-3 pencil thickness. I did this in May and they were rooted enough to separate by September, so just 4 months. (I live in Zone 6a near Cincinnati) I understand you were just seeing if you could do it, but if you have the patience, next time try doing shoots of last year's growth right around the time the candles have extended and the needles start expanding.

I forgot to say that while doing the air layers, I removed the the newly extended candles right back to last year's growth and they produce new candles and grow quickly in the following weeks. Keep as many of previous years needles as you can. I saw this method on a website years ago so I don't take credit for it.

@@Kjbrunzo Thanks. Did you water it in the meanwhile? Did you cover the bag with black cloths or foil to remove light and warmth?

@@bbbbjjj7002 One thing I didn't mention, I used small pots for the air layers, but you can wrap in plastic too, or pots covered in plastic. And I since I only had open pots for the air layers they started drying out and had to water often but those 5 were successful. I did another 3 this year, all were rooted and detached/potted up. And no black cloth since the pots kept the roots dark.

Great info. I'm going to try it on a 3 year I have. I also have a one-year, and just this week, I was able to germinate and sprout some seeds. I watched a video on using rooting gel with cuttings from seedlings to shorten the trunk on these trees, so I'll be trying that as well.

Very interesting…I’ve never thought of putting on the hormone first OR scoring the bark. Hopefully it works out for you! Cheers man!

Hey bro great work with your airlayers,you may get better luck making your liquid and powder in2 a paste and apply &do them aftr there 2nd dormant period which i do mine here in late spring or start of summer when most of the pines energys revolve around trunk & roots & usually have them rooted within 3-4 weeks .If not i usually just do 1-2yo candles &buds as cuttings like you saw on one of the bonsai group chats!!!Cheers mate thank u!!!😊

I airlayered a hinoki in 6 months. Cut it a month ago here in 7b NC. It is going strong on my deck. Going to move it next to the backdoor so it doesn't get too cold, or will put it in my greenhouse hoop ring.

Otherwise you did the same process I did when airlayering. However I did allow a gap at the top and bottom of the seran wrap and I watered it (with a mister) everyday during the summer, and covered it in tin foil to prevent evaporation and allow the roots some darkness.

Did you have to add water to it during that 1 year? Nice job 👍

Hey Ben ,Im not sure what part of the season you do your airlayers ,but through trial and error ive found that mid -late summer is the best time 2 do them and before say your 2nd week of autmn so anything after that you would have 2 wait till following spring or abit aftr .Ive managed 2b able 2 have jbp airlayers pushn roots within the first 3-4weeks then i cut them down.My rooting hormone is made up in2 a thick paste using powder and liquid form rooting hormone (i.b.a)..Goodluck and thanx for your channel..🙏🙏

What are the vented black pucks in your pots?
@armanmirk
@armanmirk 2 жыл бұрын
The answer is yes and you don't even need to ring bark as it increases the chances of rotting. The technique which has worked for me is to ring the bark using a wire that you leave in.

Worth it? As you say "play with your plants" i have a white pine grafted on a black pine it made a black pine branch at soil level it have been there for 5 years now and is only 7cm or a little over 2inch i would love to air layer it and make a pine mame from it. If i have luck and it roots i will have a new favorite tree i think. And i will have learned something new, so fare i learned it takes a long time to air layer black pines

Very interesting! You said you tried to make the wrap air tight. Did you add water to the moss between when you applied the air layer and when you removed it? If so, how often? Thanks and keep the videos coming!

Hey, Ben. This is off topic for this post, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer on this fig question...and I need help. We just moved to 98387(zone 8a) from Nevada. I have 6, 3.5 year old fig trees in 20 gallon pots. I have heavily munched all pots and they are still outside. I understand that temps in Spanaway don't get below freezing for more than 20 days, and never below 20°. Can I leave them outside? Or should I pull them into a shed?

It might be much much harder on established trees that has flaky bark already.

The main issue in my experience is the usual rooting hormone isn’t strong enough to get the job done on pines. You need the industrial strength stuff which is tough to find. If it is barked up, fooogetaboutit.
