That was incredibly helpful! I have 5 Japanese Black Pines that I got as 1 year old seedlings last year. I have been looking for advice on next steps now that they’re entering their third year. Most content out there addresses only trees that are more than 2 to 3 years old, but I know there’s a lot I can do now to help manipulate the shape of the trunk and development of branches. Do you have a video explaining how to field grow material like pines, maples and junipers. What I mean is how to start the field growing process. For example at what age would a tree be best suited to plant in the ground, should we plant directly into the ground or use grow bags, should we grow in direct sun or shady area. I think there’s lots of info missing online when it comes to field growing material for bonsai, and you Terry have some of the best field grown material and some of the best info I’ve seen on KZbin , myself and I’m sure some others would love to see more on this topic in the future!!

Thank you so much for your comment and especially for the ideas. When I started growing trees in the ground many of the platforms available today were not around. However I have documented much of what you are asking in several blog posts here: www.bonsaitree.co.za/blogs/tree-talk/tagged/field-growing I usually plant something in the ground when it has a little substance ie from seedling perhaps 2 or 3 years, from cutting then when it has a little more mature root system. Grow bags, in the context of bonsai, was pioneered I believe by the owners of the now closed Talperion farms. I have spoken with several commercial growers of trees who have experimented with this concept and they were not praising of it as they stated that if a root finds its way out a seam or somewhere else it runs, defeating the purpose. So I assume Talperion developed their own bags or something. I would love to have attended the Farm to Table event hosted by Jonas and Andrew, I am sure a lot of this information was shared there but after watching the video content available these points were not discussed. Bags on top of the ground is possible but I don't like the look and I don't like the lack of structure. I have always planted in the ground, then wooden box, then ceramic training pot, then "final" pot. However I acknowledge that you might have access to other resources and you may need to adjust accordingly. There does seem to be a lack of good quality information on KZbin for field growing, as I myself am also constantly trying to improve my skillset and have looked. The same for collected material. I will do my best to try to cover the vast subjects you have suggested over time. Thank you once again for the suggestions I do appreciate and value them greatly.

Fantastic job. So many great tips. I have been enjoying this series with the pines. Love the material you are working with. I have some seedlings i will be using these techniques on. I unfortunately did not do the really early trimming of seedling to shorten trunk but will certainly try on my next batch. Keep up the great work.

Thanks so much Samuel. Treating the seedlings as cuttings is best as it gives you lower budding which can be very useful depending in the size of tree you are going for. However it’s certainly not a necessity. So I do both. Thanks for watching and your comment. 🙇🏼‍♂️

Hi Antonio. Sure! The smaller net pots is from a South African factory, but we sell them off our website. The larger ones I believe are imported from the UK but from whom I am not sure as we buy them from the distributor and sell on our website

I would suggest not, unless you will not be disturbing the root mass. However if it’s an emergency and it will die then you could consider it I guess but you will just need to be on point with the aftercare.

Yes. It’s “damping off”. It’s a fungus. You need to spray young pine seedlings every couple weeks with fungicide.

@TerryErasmusbonsai About a week ago I mixed 15ml I thinks it's half oz of copper fungicide with a gallon of water but didn't know if I should of sprayed right out of bottle like u do for older trees. Iwas watering 3 times a day with a mister every time dirt started drying well someone told me I need to water it right and not like that so that's why I spayed it but no help

Jimmy I water the seedlings like normal - not misting. Spray them with fungicide as often as needed but probably every 2 or so weeks as they are prone when this young. I also grow them in full sun with good air movement.

To be honest I have never historically used baskets. I have only ever used pots. So I cannot tell you for sure. I would say you don’t want to repot too frequently at all or the object is defeated. I would suggest you just put into increasingly bigger colanders.
