TODAY'S VIDEO:
Jack Harries is an environmental activist who started his filmmaking career making short films on KZbin on his hugely popular channel ‘JacksGap’. He was recently arrested during an act of non-violent civil disobedience and shortly afterwards appeared live on the BBC to defend the environmental movement. I speak to Jack about veganism, environmentalism and the potential hypocrisy within the environmental movement.

How strange is that when Jack said his drive in activism is fear and the rest of the world use the same motive not to look into it.
@oakydokyart5939
@oakydokyart5939 5 жыл бұрын
Good point, I guess it's the direction he let his fear take him. Like with any emotion, we can take it the way we direct it. For example, when you're nervous before a stage performance whether it be public speaking or a play, we can direct that feeling into reasoning to avoid what is creating the feeling, or enforce it as excitement, and reason to go out there and put your performance forward because you care. Jack cares about the environment, as well as those who don't look into it out of fear. He took his fear and let it motivate his activism, instead of ignorance. Sorry, you probably already new this that drew you to commenting your point. But in writing this, it made me realise the importance of motive and reasoning. Thanks for the comment, it opened my mind to emotional motive and how we can direct it =)

It's not just a human issue. I keep hearing people saying the planet will be fine. But it isn't true. If we wipe out thousands of species that took millions of years to evolve, that's abyss staringly horrible. Yeah the planet will evolve new ones, but destroying something incredibly beautiful is still horrible.

I often hear from the denier camp making fun about a Apocalypse like 2012 that is coming. I get the feeling these people only can understand it, when their personal life is affected. And sadly they see human life as absolutely superior and with this context I can understand, when you have to explain to them that it is humans who will be fucked, it will be their children and grand children too who face the consequences. They couldn't care less about millions of species who face extinction.

I'm not completely vegan - I don't eat meat or dairy, but I still eat honey and also occasionally eggs when my aunt's chickens lay some. I try to avoid plastic, I don't own a car, I no longer fly unless I absolutely have to. I recycle what my city allows me to. It's not perfect, but I still think that is pretty environmentally friendly, even if it's not vegan. So in my opinion you don't have to be vegan to be an environmentalist, but continuing to eat especially red meat and dairy on a regular basis is irresponsible when you claim to care about the environment.

I participated in the Global school strike for climate in Montreal in March and I was quite frustrated listening to speeches by young kids talking about picking up garbage and taking public transport when I was a holding a "Go Vegan" sign. But I was also happy I wasn't the only one, I saw maybe 4-5 vegan signs which means that people ARE aware that animal agriculture is arguably the biggest issue and factor causing global warming. I believe we can like you said "meet them where they're at" and really help them see the bigger picture. I am sure young people like me have more vigour and willingness to change. Bernie briefly alluded about the dangers of industrial farming before on Twitter, which is the closest you can get to politicians addressing the issue. Not to mention that the current demand for animal products can only be met by factory farming so the best option is to advocate for veganism which of course is too controversial to have as a platform. AOC briefly mentioned Americans needing to "eat less beef" and Republicans bashed her and Fox News plastered it as her wanting to "kill all the cows" which is as fear-mongery as it gets. Like Ed said, it's easier to evade responsibility for the impending doom that we're facing and dismiss it altogether instead of ever acknowledging it. edit: typo

Hi Ed, I'm French and I can explain a few things about the reaction of the people to the raise of gas taxes. A few months before this decision, the president had cancelled the ISF (impôt sur la fortune=taxes that only the super rich had to pay). At the same time, public transportation prices were (and still are) rising, privatisation of highways from a few years ago had led to people paying much more to use them (and still does), railways are being shut down, etc... So when the government asks everybody to pay more to use their car, poor people reacted in a logical and sensible manner: by saying no. And this tax is even more unfair that it impacts poor people the most: they spend a greater percentage of what they earn in gas than ido the rich (so increasing this tax is really increasing what is already the opposite of a fair tax), and poor people generally have to commute more to get to their workplace because of gentrification and the higher prices of housing near jobs (=in the city). So this tax really is the most unfair one there is (even more unfair given the context). It was about making ends meet for the people, that's why they said no. The govenrments could have suggested fighting tax fraud to use the billions (>50 billion a year if I remember correctly) we lose each year in France alone to fight climate change.

If only that were the only problem to address in this world!) Thank you both for all your activism and public education, a real service.

So many things I never even considered. Like places becoming inhabitable. It’s so sad so many people seem to care so little. People in power need to wake up. Our planet is more important than wealth. What good will money be when the planet is dead?

It started a snowball effect and I watched Earthlings, Dominion, Land of Hope and Glory, What the Health, Forks over Knives, Vegan 2017/2018, Let us be Heroes, and other KZbinrs like Joey Carbstrong and James Aspey. Best decision I’ve ever made, only wish I’d have done it sooner. Thank you Ed. Thank you Jack.

"It's funny how the word extremist/radical is used so freely with vegans. The word radical is supposed to have negative connotation, but challenging any dominant systematic paradigm seems radical because it's not what we're used to. But when you realise what a serious issue it is, it doesn't seem extreme, infact it seems the opposite. It seems necessary, and right." Really relate to this because I used to find it really extreme as well, until you are open to knowing the truth. It's nice not to know and to be ignorant. Ignorance is bliss. We're really good at choosing not to know since we can avoid taking accountability for our choices. But once you know you can't go back and you think differently.

Ed, I think it’d be really interesting to see a debate between a religious person who’s advocates for veganism and one who believe we’re meant to eat animals. I see you speaking to many religious people, particularly Christians who believe we should eat animals. But I’m a vegan Christian and I personally believe veganism is in harmony with Christian views and values and there’s are huge argument for veganism and the Bible.

The problem with increasing tax on fuel in France, after the prices had increased all year, was so unfair when in rural areas there is no public transport at all. The people in Paris are not so affected by the increasing diesel prices. The people have been encouraged to buy diesel cars. The second hand car market is not the same as the UK, company cars are not so common so people keep their cars a lot longer. Food prices have climbed over the last ten years, and electricity is about to rise too.

It seems to me that many many people (myself included) have a habit of going to the polar opposite of the thing that they disagree with. We have an in built mechanism to avoid pain and discomfort be it physical or emotional so when we encounter that we look for a solution that is as far from that event as possible. We rarely seek an alternative that could lie in the middle ground. I went plant based (vegan) 18 months ago, I'm glad I did i certainly have no interest in going back. I came in for health reasons but at the time was still not prepared to look to deeply under the covers around animal suffering or environmental damage so I still bought other products that have animal materials in them such as leather. However over the last 6 months I have been prepared to push my personal boundary and accept a level of discomfort I wasn't ready to before. I have watched Dominion among others and I'm now looking at just about every possible option to avoid animal products all together. But it took time and a personal willingness to get there. I'm almost certain if I was pestered, harassed, abused etc during my journey it might have stalled out or reversed. Instead it was given the time it needed to flourish and mature. Being Vegan or being an environmentalist or any other tag you want is an identity and sometimes people need an entrance point somewhere before they can ever get to a deeper place. If we don't give people the ability to walk that path with encouragement and civility it will be very hard to ever guide them further. I firmly think that many of us forget that without an environment nothing much else will matter, no label, no tag, no identity as we will not have the luxury to worry about such things. Our hand may be forced. Lets try as best we can to guide and encourage people (I know time may well be short for our environment but rushing people is not likely going to work and most likely ends in defeat). Meet them at the point of entry they have started at, guide them further, show them compassion and understanding and maybe they will build their own tolerance to meet you in the middle. Who knows how far they can go from there? As more people become Vegan / Plant Based the compounding effect can be significant and the doubling effect can start to happen very quickly. We may all be surprised at just how fast this tide will turn if we meet people with kindness. Thanks Ed for your voice and work, I very much respect the way you conduct yourself towards others. Have an awesome day.

50 people consume as much as 1 Westerner? Hmm interesting point Still if you travel a bit you will notice that people in developing countries have no idea about the impact of their choices. In Vietnam, India, Indonesia many other places you will see rivers and oceans floating with plastic and chemicals....don't forget that the destruction of our habitat is more than our diets (I'm vegan and I think that everyone should be but I also think that there are more factors to be considered). What I used to say after living in Vietnam...for every zero waste Westerner there are thousands of people in developing countries who use kilos of plastic a week...we want change? Raise awareness and educate all continents!! Act locally think globally!! Great podcast btw 🌱
