How strange is that when Jack said his drive in activism is fear and the rest of the world use the same motive not to look into it.
@oakydokyart59395 жыл бұрын
Good point, I guess it's the direction he let his fear take him. Like with any emotion, we can take it the way we direct it. For example, when you're nervous before a stage performance whether it be public speaking or a play, we can direct that feeling into reasoning to avoid what is creating the feeling, or enforce it as excitement, and reason to go out there and put your performance forward because you care. Jack cares about the environment, as well as those who don't look into it out of fear. He took his fear and let it motivate his activism, instead of ignorance. Sorry, you probably already new this that drew you to commenting your point. But in writing this, it made me realise the importance of motive and reasoning. Thanks for the comment, it opened my mind to emotional motive and how we can direct it =)

I often hear from the denier camp making fun about a Apocalypse like 2012 that is coming. I get the feeling these people only can understand it, when their personal life is affected. And sadly they see human life as absolutely superior and with this context I can understand, when you have to explain to them that it is humans who will be fucked, it will be their children and grand children too who face the consequences. Bernie briefly alluded about the dangers of industrial farming before on Twitter, which is the closest you can get to politicians addressing the issue. Not to mention that the current demand for animal products can only be met by factory farming so the best option is to advocate for veganism which of course is too controversial to have as a platform. AOC briefly mentioned Americans needing to "eat less beef" and Republicans bashed her and Fox News plastered it as her wanting to "kill all the cows" which is as fear-mongery as it gets. Like Ed said, it's easier to evade responsibility for the impending doom that we're facing and dismiss it altogether instead of ever acknowledging it. edit: typo

@marwannaciri19265 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed, I'm French and I can explain a few things about the reaction of the people to the raise of gas taxes. A few months before this decision, the president had cancelled the ISF (impôt sur la fortune=taxes that only the super rich had to pay). At the same time, public transportation prices were (and still are) rising, privatisation of highways from a few years ago had led to people paying much more to use them (and still does), railways are being shut down, etc... So when the government asks everybody to pay more to use their car, poor people reacted in a logical and sensible manner: by saying no. And this tax is even more unfair that it impacts poor people the most: they spend a greater percentage of what they earn in gas than ido the rich (so increasing this tax is really increasing what is already the opposite of a fair tax), and poor people generally have to commute more to get to their workplace because of gentrification and the higher prices of housing near jobs (=in the city). So this tax really is the most unfair one there is (even more unfair given the context). It was about making ends meet for the people, that's why they said no. The govenrments could have suggested fighting tax fraud to use the billions (>50 billion a year if I remember correctly) we lose each year in France alone to fight climate change.

It seems to me that many many people (myself included) have a habit of going to the polar opposite of the thing that they disagree with. We have an in built mechanism to avoid pain and discomfort be it physical or emotional so when we encounter that we look for a solution that is as far from that event as possible. We rarely seek an alternative that could lie in the middle ground. I went plant based (vegan) 18 months ago, I'm glad I did i certainly have no interest in going back. I came in for health reasons but at the time was still not prepared to look to deeply under the covers around animal suffering or environmental damage so I still bought other products that have animal materials in them such as leather. However over the last 6 months I have been prepared to push my personal boundary and accept a level of discomfort I wasn't ready to before. I have watched Dominion among others and I'm now looking at just about every possible option to avoid animal products all together. But it took time and a personal willingness to get there. I'm almost certain if I was pestered, harassed, abused etc during my journey it might have stalled out or reversed. Instead it was given the time it needed to flourish and mature. Being Vegan or being an environmentalist or any other tag you want is an identity and sometimes people need an entrance point somewhere before they can ever get to a deeper place. If we don't give people the ability to walk that path with encouragement and civility it will be very hard to ever guide them further. I firmly think that many of us forget that without an environment nothing much else will matter, no label, no tag, no identity as we will not have the luxury to worry about such things. Our hand may be forced. Lets try as best we can to guide and encourage people (I know time may well be short for our environment but rushing people is not likely going to work and most likely ends in defeat). Meet them at the point of entry they have started at, guide them further, show them compassion and understanding and maybe they will build their own tolerance to meet you in the middle. Who knows how far they can go from there? As more people become Vegan / Plant Based the compounding effect can be significant and the doubling effect can start to happen very quickly. We may all be surprised at just how fast this tide will turn if we meet people with kindness. Thanks Ed for your voice and work, I very much respect the way you conduct yourself towards others. Have an awesome day.

The problem with increasing tax on fuel in France, after the prices had increased all year, was so unfair when in rural areas there is no public transport at all. The people in Paris are not so affected by the increasing diesel prices. The people have been encouraged to buy diesel cars. The second hand car market is not the same as the UK, company cars are not so common so people keep their cars a lot longer. I enjoyed every single second of this conversation! Both Ed and Jack made AMAZING points about how we are all fundamentally environmentalists since we all have a stake in the planet's future. Funny how Ed said he has never formally identified as an environmentalist even though I see him as an environmental activist more so than many other self-proclaimed environmentalists. Ed I'd love to see you do more videos on veganism, the environment and climate change!

Sure you can. It's a step in the right direction and when you put your passion behind something things slowly start snapping into place. Me for example.15 years ago I learned how veal comes about and stopped consuming it. Now, you would have thought I'd look at the other meat options, but the connection still didn't go. It has now, and while it was slow going I am now vegan for almost 2 years. People can very much care about certain things and rather than calling them hypocrites, murders and the like. Instead tell them well done and educate further. When someone is making a change, even a small one for ethical reasons, that means they are open to other changes as well. This is in reply to some of the comments.
@gregoryrowlerson84575 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is too much of a "you are either totally with us, or totally against us". People should be encouraged to consume less meat and dairy in general, and from there, there is likely to be an eventual progression onto veganism. Whereas the whole, "Just go vegan!" "It's easy to go vegan!" puts a lot of people off.

Ed, i think it would be realy useful to tackle this question of "cows being good for the environment" (grass and soils issue). I feel like its the one criticism I get from people that I can't answer and you have not really talked about yet. Otherwise thank you for an amazing podcast once again ❤

I skipped school to march for climate change in Melbourne city last week. I didn't want to, I didn't want to literally protest for the right of my, and others future. So it just adds up that climate change has a bigger impact on my future, than educating and preparing in myself for the future i might not have.

thanks guys, feeling a bit more hopeful after a week of reading everything there is to learn about climate change (which doesn't make anyone hopeful). I'll do my best to create more activism in my yoga community, as I feel that's a place where change can happen fast. thank you again!

Ed! I have a problem with the argument “Do you think your taste buds are more important than an animals life” or “ is a 10-15 minute meal more important than an animals life” It suggests that vegan food cant recreate those flavors and textures whereas I’ve had many experiences where vegan food perfectly resembles its cruelty counterpart. What is your opinion on this?
@marianhalcombe33055 жыл бұрын
Agreed! However carnists often argue that they eat meat because it tastes good and they wouldn't be as open to the alternatives. This is a good follow up to check if they're at least being morally consistent. He also asks "which is more important: an animal's life or your convenience?". I think that's even more valid because I know from experience that vegan meat is quite expensive and one must go out of their way to find it. With a McDeath every other block or so, it's much easier to make a quick pit stop there than to look for a place with good veg burgers.
@ryanbruno12125 жыл бұрын
I like that better. Convenience vs. life. Thats a great response. Because i dont think we actually like the taste of meat as much as we think. We just like what we do to that meat (salt, sauce, seasoning, marinade)

On the issue of can you fly and be an environmentalist, I am working everyday researching ways to bring down the CO2 of aviation by making current aircraft much more efficient and also being able to use ground generated power to power aircraft via batteries or in chemical form by using it to generate hydrogen which can be liquified. But the entirety of aviation are responsible for 6% of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas emission. So even if I and my colleagues can cut the fuel usage in half (which is our goal and which seems achievable) that will only reduce greenhouse gas emissions 3%. But let's assume that we completely eliminate aviation and go back to trains and ships to travel long distances, we will only reduce greenhouses gases by 6%. But if we use value for animal agriculture of 32% (a middle ground estimate between the 15% value from the UN and the 50% value of the World Bank estimates), then we could achieve the same reduction in greenhouse gases by simply reducing our meat consumption by 20%.

Really enjoyed this. Ed, I love the way you reason over these issues and you are not completely one-sided but come to conclusions through logical thinking and assessing the counter arguments. Climate change is the single biggest worry for humanity, and is likely to kill us all. It is absolutely ludicrous that with all the research / technology / knowledge we have today, that we are still sleepwalking into this catastrophe. It really hurts and upsets me to speak to people who would rather be 'wilfully ignorant'. Nice job! Keep it up !

@georgetaylor1005 жыл бұрын
great video guys. Its worth raising that in conjunction with the gillets jaunes movement in France - there were also people protesting in support of climate action alongside those protesting against the green fuel tax. It was two separate movements but they would engage civilly with each other and exchange ideas. I live in France at the moment so I saw it all first hand. Also a global one child policy is a horrendous idea- we need to maintain the birth rate to have a young working population to support the old. See Japan. Diet change is the biggest factor - population growth is a straw man to divert blame away from the lack of action
@ArtbyMagic5 жыл бұрын
Boys you got it, it’s the truth. A lot of people are trading stuff to experiences. For this they toss what they have just to consume travel. The most environmental thing is to stay put and use what you have locally even if it’s not the most fashionable. There will be no saving Earth without changing consumerism.

@@ansdr9601 no, the other fella, Fulsi. Vegans are a very diverse group, and to try and lump it into anti-capitalism is just doing everyone a disservice. The animals need a unified front, we dont need to agree on other things to fight for the animals. So trying to make capitalism an issue of veganism will only alienate people
@ansdr96015 жыл бұрын
@@tigerlilly3727 Yes! Someone said it thank you! Capitalism is not to blame for the immorality and many people use as an excuse not to make changes in their diet/lifestyle and we, vegans, shouldn't be encouraging this idea. And also, we should bare in mind that only in a capitalistic society should we be able to abolish animal cruelty, by not paying for it! If we atopted socialism, probably we wouldn't have the right to be vegan at all!

Hi Ed, just want to say that I really appreciate your videos and your blog! I would have wished for you to have included that, although it is completely and utterly improbable, if every human being would go vegan by tomorrow, we would still have the majority of the problems we are having now due to animal farming. It needs time to change the food industry. Another point is that, yes, XR is pointing their finger at others, but just because the founders saw no other way, because changing you lifestyle, going to demonstrations, signing petitions, inspiring the people around you, etc. was just not enough. "It would be nicer not to know, but once you know, you can't really go back." Exactly this - I went vegetarian four years ago because I could no longer ignore my conscience, and recently I cut out dairy too for the same reasons. It would have been more convenient and easy not to be aware of the harm we're causing the planet and how our own personal lifestyles contribute directly to this, but once you become aware, you have to make sometimes inconvenient changes if you still want to look yourself in the eye.

Heyy I’m french and I live in France, I wanted to come back on what you said about the gilets jaunes and Macron. I know from an outsider’s perspective you could think that they were uneasy about the fact that they would have to pay for research in renewable energy themselves, howerver the thing is the government said it was going to ecology when actually only 25percent would go to the minister of ecology and the other 75percent would go directly in the pocket of the state. Probably to make up for the loss of 4billon euros due to the supression of the fortune tax a few months beforethat, which was payed by the wealthiest 1%. The people then saw the fraud and the hypocrisy of the government who was trying to take money from them while saying it was for the planet and make them feel guilty. All of the people who live far from the cities are obligated to take their cars to work, a carbon tax means not having much to eat at the end of the month. If they developped furthermore the transport systems (buses for ex) then they could propose a carbon tax and people won’t feel ripped off. Other than that, great podcast, love your work ! xx

I find the idea behind Extinction Rebellion's creating civil unrest really appealing. On one hand, I agree that for someone trying to get to their job, an interruption on the way could be devastating. On the other hand, climate change is going to inconvenience the whole planet if we wait any longer. If there's so much civil unrest, it could actually get public officials to do something.
