Can You Beat Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance with Only Blade Mode?

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a heck of a game, and a heck of a mouthful in terms of titles. I think if I were to play this game outside of a challenge run, it would probably come across as more polished. The game sort of fell to pieces when examined too closely. Ironic, I suppose.
In spite of that, I thoroughly enjoyed the rollercoaster that was the challenge and the game itself. It was a good time, even if things got a bit dicey. While the game is nearing being out for a decade at the time of making this run, it's still a pretty good time any way you slice it.
You could say it really made the cut. You'd think I'd be tired of these jokes by now, but that wouldn't be a very sharp observation. To get to the heart of the matter though, I hope you enjoy!
And that the puns don't kill you. I'm sorry.

Ok first of all, I wasn’t quite sure if you’ve played the game before this, but if you haven’t, please do a normal play through it’ll leave you with much better memories. Also something I wanted to mention was in the Jetstream Sam fight, the second phase is activated by parrying an attack where he charges at you with his sword in sheath. When you parry it, it triggers a blade mode section where you cut at his sword hand and knock out his sword, which ironically is worse than the rest of the fight. The attack where he was slowly walking at you and not doing anything while you were in blade mode was the attack that triggers phase 2.

This was actually my first time playing through the game. I'm not sure if/when I'll have time to play it normally. Rest assured though that I actually do really like the game. As painful as the fights were, I'm really glad I played it. My biggest regret was not being able to play with the music going, because the soundtrack is incredible, and I've been listening to it a lot separately since finishing the run. Also, that's hilarious! It's interesting how many things break if you refuse to interact with them. He was trying so hard to just make the fight more cinematic, and I killed him. Now I feel a bit bad for the guy.

@@SpuddyCube tbf, when I fight Sam now, I tend not to trigger the second phase as it's usually faster and less annoying to not knock the sword out of his hand. If you don't he'll stop trying to make you trigger phase two and go to phase 3 at about 50% I think (not entirely sure what the threshold is it's somewhere around there)

I think this is the first “can’t do/only do” challenge video for this game that was actually able to be done with all of its rules intact. Summarizing the story was also great as I haven’t played it yet and didn’t quite understand the plot. Nice job and amazing video.

It's one that I'd love to revisit. It's not the most polished gem in the world, but it certainly shines. I do think the wigs would make any given challenge run a bit too easy though. That being said, I can't see myself doing only Blade Mode again. It was painful enough the first time.

Thank you! I remember spending a lot of time messing around with the demo. The idea of it was mind blowing at the time, but I didn't end up picking it up until around late last year. My only regret is not trying it sooner. It is hard to recommend the run itself in good conscience though. It's obviously possible, but boss fights shouldn't last half an hour.

It’s a really cool mechanic and I’m shocked no other samurai/swordsman game have attempted it or even a toned down version. Although now that I think about it if there was a game that allowed you to do this against regular humans and had accurately depicted anatomy, it would probably be the most violent video game ever seen. 😅😂😅

There are a lot of games that implement damage to specific parts, but even if only for performance reasons, they usually don't go super hard into dismemberment beyond full sections being removed. I think the big problem is that it either doesn't do much for the actual game, or it kind of is the game. I love Monster Hunter, but part breaks don't... really do anything. Sniper elite went pretty hard into specific parts in terms of damage, but the rest of the game felt unpolished. Even Revengeance doesn't let you go straight to it (ignoring the FOX blade), so it's kind of hard to imagine making a balanced experience around that level of detail. Obvious rating issues aside, bladed weapons are genuinely really dangerous! Putting together a combat system that allows you to disassemble your foes but still have a meaningful challenge is no easy feat. My best guess would be that it's just easier not to, as novel as it is.

If you still don't know, during monsoons fight when he activates his full magnet mode (purple mist and dodge mode) you *have* to parry his attacks to break it He does 4 different attacks (2 arms, his legs, and another arm section) where parrying them cancels the rest of the attack. Successfully parrying them all stuns monsoon, letting you blade mode his head, knocking it off and canceling his dodge phase Also, during that phase he can't be hit at _all_ unless you parry an attack that stuns him, wait out of it, or hit him with an emp grenade that drops from the vehicles he throws sometimes During one of the last phases with the giant wheel of vehicles you can parry it to avoid the damage or need to dodge, letting you blade mode slice it up Hope this helps! P.s. learn how to perfect parry. This let's you get free executions on some stronger enemy types, stun even stronger ones/bosses, cancel monsoons annoying dodge phase, and even wipe over *half* of a bosses hp in *one* parry in revengence difficulty

if you completed the game you have get the sam and blade wolf dlc. Maybe try beating sam dlc with only blade mode are well heavy attack just choose if you even wanna do this to be honest and if you wanna upgrade sam you will find these Creates there are a other color from normal ones if you open then you can get Health/Blade mode/Upgrades for sword i'm not sure if you get upgrades for the murasama. by the way love your videos very awesome and when i first watched your video i was thinking you had way more subscribers But you only have 32 well i subscribed so 33 now.

It might make for a fun shorter project later down the line, if nothing else. Looking back, it turns out that a little more than half of the games I've played for the channel, I first played as a challenge run. I can't deny that it's an odd way to experience games, but it does help that I've devoted a pretty significant portion of my life to the hobby. I don't know what you mean specifically. If I had to guess, you're referring to some blurring that comes from resampling. It's an easy fix, but something I didn't know about when I made the video. Uncheck one box, and everything comes out more crisp.

I'm not sure about keyboard & mouse, but controller is I think via clicking the left thumbstick and holding the direction you'd like to go. It might be the right thumbstick. Either way, it feels incredibly counter intuitive. It's also really slow, and rarely worth it.

No reason to feel bad. I know it's definitely not for everyone. I personally enjoy poking fun at even the things I love. I feel like it's healthy to acknowledge faults, and I often find it more enjoyable to do so in a teasing sort of fashion. To put it bluntly, I think that from a critical standpoint, Rising Revengeance is probably a bad game. The writing and whatnot is at least not "good". Not high art, you know? That being said, I wouldn't want to change a thing. The voice cast is perfect. The pacing, the campy scenarios... It's absolutely amazing. I adore this game, faults and all. I would genuinely love a sequel, and if it wasn't the same sort of cheesy experience, I'd be really disappointed. I also think there can be a disconnect between something being good and something you like. The Last of Us is pretty rightfully popular, as it's an incredible game. I personally found it more stressful than anything else though. I would hope that wouldn't detract from anyone else's fun, but it's certainly not for me. I enjoy this game a lot differently than how I would enjoy something like God of War, but it's very close to my heart. In so many words, mockery is how I enjoy some games/films, and I really hope that doesn't come across as malicious.
