Nioh2 is real life feudal Japanese history mixed with yokai and they kinda assume that you know famous historical events and people from the time period. The plot also jumps through historical events quite often and doesn't really explain who is who. Some say this was because the game was originally planned for domestic audiences and planned only to be released in Japan. Anyway, this mixed with names being foreign to most westerners makes following the plot quite difficult, but you did a very good job following with the plot and what's happening. Not to mention your challenge run was awesome as always.

I disagree, I knew nothing about Japanese history other than events from nioh 1, which you’re probably expected to play before this since it’s a sequel and all, but anyways I was able to follow the story just fine, and was able to actually get immersed enough into it where I would play through a mission or beat a boss just to see what happens next in the story. I’ve seen this argument against the game several times and I just really don’t get it, so I had to step in.

The nioh 1 ninjutsu only was legendary but this wasn’t bad either. Made me chuckle here and there. The talk about moving on regardless of how long it takes really hit home. Healing can take a year and even more but you need to stay alive to do that and the world really does deserve the best version of yourself.

That's good to hear! On both counts. I absolutely understand the desire to get results quickly. The want for things to just feel okay. But healing emotionally tends to be anything but quick, and you deserve the time that it takes to get there. As hard as it can/will be, people deserve the time to be happy.

After playing Nioh 1, Nioh 2, the entire Souls series, and Bloodborne, I still hold to this date that Nioh 2 is the best game in this "souls like" genre. A lot of people who haven't played Nioh 2 just have no idea how in depth and fun it is or even understand how it brings an astronomical amount of technicality to the souls like combat in comparison to its contemporaries.

Thank you! I really appreciate that. In ways that are really hard to put into words, let alone text. I pretty regularly struggle with my own mental issues. Can't help but feel passionately about people getting the help that they need. It took far too much of my life to come to the conclusion that it's okay to not be okay. To find the people that could help me through emotional trials that I wasn't ready to handle by myself. Because... you don't need to. There aren't any rules against friends helping to pick you up. There's no deadline for reaching a point where you're happy and healthy. You might be able to guess, but I genuinely really love games. They've been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. These runs are a great opporunity to talk about a lot of things in game and out that I'm passionate about, and this one just felt right. Ah, excellent. I have been looking forward to this upload. To give some brief historical context to the game, you play as one half of an obviously fictionalized two-person version of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the second of the three great unifiers of Japan. The first being Oda Nobunaga and the third being Tokugawa Ieyasu. The game jumps time a lot between major events during the Sengoku period, and even skips other major events entirely (as far as I know), like Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea. In reality, he died before the game's ending from an illness. William is featured, and he didn't make it to Japan until 1600. Hideyoshi died in 1598, which is why he never appears in the first game, but the second takes place before and after it with all the time jumps. They just keep resurrecting the non-player half of Hideyoshi for the character's personal story with the Sengoku period going on in the background, because if he died when he was supposed to in-game, we would've never seen William and it wouldn't have made for a bossfight... unless you fought the illness killing him or the bed he died on transformed into a yokai. Just like the first one, it is a fantasy version of a very real and important part in Japan's history, but it's still confusing to keep up with if you don't know about all the events going on. Oh, and I realize the character models look similar, but you work for Tokugawa Ieyasu in the first game, not Hideyoshi. And now with my historical fact dump done as I did with the first game, I await the magic challenge run for whenever you get around to doing that.
@SpuddyCube
@SpuddyCube Жыл бұрын
Aw, hell yeah! Thank you for the history dump! A part of me is glad that I didn't know more going in so I got to experience the ride, rather than wondering what was going to lead to one or both of us taking control of Japan. I am curious as to why they'd leave out something as big as an invasion of Korea. A part of me is disappointed that we didn't get that sort of battle between Hideyoshi and their health. In retrospect, would it be much of a stretch to say that him turning into a yokai/dying as a result of his possession could be seen as a metaphor for the real event? As for my realization way too late into the game, it was seeing Oda with his facial hair/armor that I realized was in fact in the first game. Dates have a way of just going over my head, so seeing him alive and well made it click, "Oh, this is a prequel!" After the fact, I started seeing more and more familiar faces. Then after the time skip, there was the whole William thing, so I wasn't sure how much time had passed, but everything eventually lined up. I'm really glad that you enjoyed the last enough to wait for the this one/the inevitable magic run. I look forward to putting it the next together. And really, thank you for these! Nothing makes a topic more interesting than someone that's passionate in talking about it.

I doubt too many people care since the story is so hard to follow anyway, but some lore context, back in the day some clans in Japan had a inherited sort of name, whoever was the head of the clan just had that name, even if it wasn't their birth name. I don't recall if it was ever outright stated but characters like Hanzo and Saika Magoichi are not the same characters that are interacting with William, but are actually those characters fathers. Hanzo is really interesting because at some point he turns into a giant toad, the one William fought, and I thought it was neat that they made him use a spear in Nioh 2. Ninjutsu is just less upfront power and much more synergistic in nioh 2 compared to 1. Feathers obliterate but you need ki damage from your weapon first. Ninjutsu can be monstrous for anima generation with the right setup, especially with the DLC. The biggest difference for me is the status effects. Poison was always pretty useless in normal runs. It just ends up dealing a fairly insignificant percentage of the damage I’m dealing. Paralyze is absolutely useless in 2, but that’s more reflective of Ia-QuickDraw and the like no longer being able to one shot everything.

I have to say that the story of Nioh 2 was a lot more memorable imo than the story in Nioh; The entire story feels like a culmination of failures and setbacks. Sure, there are battles won, but they're battles that came at cost to both sides. One thing the Japanese audio really emphasized for me was how hurt Tokochiro was when you abandon him at mount Tenno. It may have been two people, one name, but at that point, he had already chosen Amrita as his path to victory, and while this isn't an excuse for the tens of thousands of Yokai and people slain, unfortunately for many, their amrita being taken from them just to become the strength to destroy the evil which corrupts them is often the best their souls could hope for in that regard.

It could just have been due to acclimation to the style of the games, but I found it a lot more digestible than the first game. Hay how about an interesting challenge for you. Yokai only, you can only use yokai abilities and yokai shift, consumables are allowed and if you want you can do it in ng+ if you’d like it’s really one of my favorite build types in the game, of course if you wish to make the meta version of that kind of build you’ll have to have all 3 dlcs (because of the ng++ dotD, ng+++dotW, and ng++++dotN are lock behind having the dlcs and have all three of the gives you the true endgame of nioh 2 after beating the game 3 times each with an additional modifier to enemies and changing enemy spawns, like Devil May Cry.)

I am interested in trying out the yokai abilities, but I don't know that I'll be wanting to go all the way through the various new game+ levels. More than anything, I had an issue with hitting things while also not getting hit. Lightning/water were both really easy for most enemies to avoid by just walking. Even the tracking fire would miss faster moving enemies. The damage/status potential was incredible, but I usually just got hit/died while stuck in the casting animation. And while they can be canceled via burst counter, that really didn't feel like it was in the spirit of things.

'when you wear light armor you get one-shot' No. When you wear underleveled light armor and put nothing into constitution, you get one-shot. Normal light armor wearing works fine. Also, being allowed to block stops you from getting stunlocked. On that note, you can actually block barehanded, and iirc the barehand parry obtained through the samurai skill tree doesn't get instant-guardbroken when you time it properly, even against attacks it can't actually parry. I'm aware this is an attempt at an overspecific challenge run, but still might be best to cover more generalties of how the the game actually works, so prospective new players who see it because of your video don't get the wrong idea about the mechanics. There were also a number of times in this playthrough where you could have made your life a LOT easier by something as simple as allowing the consumables that are identical to jutsu items (or that any reasonable person would class as 'ninja trickery'). Kashin Koji is also much more manageable if you bring rankansen coin ninjutsu (no appreciable damage, but infinite use, so long as you have even a little bit of money) to remove the copies the flood the arena with AOE. Or, if allowing consumables, just throw rocks at them. You could have also notably improved the damage of your bombs by also stacking +fire damage (you don't ever mention doing this in the video, and your damage would seem to indicate you didn't), as the biggest proportion of their damage is fire element. It may also effect the DOT, I don't remember for certain. While I've not done the super strict 'only ninjutsu items' run, I have run with just consumables + the ability to block.

Largely because then only half of what I would be using would be a jutsu. Some/a lot of the damage would be coming from the weapon itself. A pretty large amount of the difficulty through the run comes from managing resources properly. In some cases, the margin for error was really thin, so having damage coming from another source would just feel wrong. Thank you though!
