For me headphones are the route to a silent pc as I've tried & never quite managed it

When you just described what everyone craving absolute silence needs to learn: noise floor. As long as you PC sits below the noise floor in your hearing range, it'll be functionally inaudible to you. The only time it's really required to have a completely passive PC is in audio production or the like where the noise floor is extremely low.

Yeah, but if the brain knows that fans are spinning, maybe some brains will generate noise out of the blue...the placebo effect :) Also, I don't like it when I'm recording a video and the PC goes vroooom vroooom...

The "Whirrr" sound never really got to me. Way I see it, headphones drowned it out or, during the day, the speakers were loud enough to make the fans a non issue. I had a friend obsessed with noise. He'd spend a fortune ensuring you couldn't hear a single fan blade spinning in his PC. Then he'd buy a £150 cherry MX-red keyswitch mechanical keyboard and all you'd hear is "CLACKY CLACKY CLACKY!" coming from his man cave...

I'm not bothered by the keyboard or mouse clicks, but I hate spinning fans.

my very first PC was a p4 2.4ghz, 256mb ram with no graphics card, the first graphics card i had was a agp geforce 256mb and 128bits card i cant name by memory, it was christmas 2007(or 8) and i was having a blast playing games(NFS, cs 1.6, Tibia, Cabal Online). Watching your video made me unlock this memory and rediscovered the name of the video card that match a low to medium end with 256mb/128bits(wich maybe is a 7600gt or a 7600gs) thank you for the video.

As there is PSU with fan, it would be interesesting to test this system in older case with classic PSU on the top. It might be very supportive to take hot air up to the cpu cooler

i usually solder some 20ohm resistor to the fan and lower the voltage this way, sometimes i use 3x 20ohm resistors cause the heat generated was too high for a single 60ohm resistor. i do this for cpu cooler fans, mostly. it's also fun since i know 0.1% of what electronics is

Most motherboards have fan tuning in BIOS. Even older ones, i think i got my first one in about 2007, an Abit that had full voltage control on all of it's fan connectors.

Having a "quiet" pc has never been an issue for me. I use to have an OCZ Gladiator cpu copper cooler that had a 6000 rpm fan never bothered me. I had a 5.1 surround speaker system.

Same here, since i had a vulcano 6cu+ (6000rpm) on a duron 800, never more complained about fan noise. However, a nice 4870 crossfire not only sounds like a beast, its great for winter.

the last time I tried making a passive build, it ended up having coil whine under load anyway. it really wasn't worth the trouble. I just use low speed fans these days instead of trying to go passive

I used to equip my graphic cards with after market coolers, back then. This reduced the noise best, while still getting an often better cooling that the stock solution had. Then things like low rpm fans with good bearings, fanless power supply, case insulation.... One has to experiment with his own components to find the best solution, but you'll eventually get to a good result. Still there's things like coil whine in certain situations, where you just can't do anything about 😉 Anyway, good video again! Keep em coming!

Silent and hot, but still a capable build. The SSD helps quite a bit and maybe a PSU with passive mode is great aswell. Nice work!

Thanks! I will need another video card, another motherboard for undervolting the CPU, and maybe a better PSU, not 100% passive, the fan won't spin for some gold-rated PSUs if the system power consumption is not that big.

Finally u got it...a fan at 300rpm is a game changer and still u got dead silence. U need a good psu from seasonic with hybrid mode and you are ok. U can build a pc with higher grade (u can go up to i7) components in order to play games and still have the same level of silence.
@looks-suspicious
@looks-suspicious Күн бұрын
Hybrid mode is garbage. I bought an expensive Seasonic Prime Titanium with hybrid mode and assumed it would be perfect for my otherwise inaudible machine. It wasn't. Unfortunately, when the fan is not spinning, the power supply starts to accumulate heat that must be expelled in regular intervals. This means that the fan needs to spin up from time to time even when the computer is idling. Now, due to the way PWM fan control works, it cannot do this silently - it always starts at full rpm, and then instantly slows down after 2 seconds. So you get sudden bursts of loud noise every half hour or so, and it's super annoying. And having the fan running all the time without hybrid mode makes it just about audible, because it's a cheap piece of junk. After two days, I had enough. I opened the power supply and replaced the garbage stock fan with a be quiet Silent Wings fan, which I hooked up to the motherboard. Now, the fan is running all the time, but at very low rpm, and it's completely inaudible.

To build a silent Windows XP System buy a Socket AM3 with Athlon II x4 605e only with 45W TDP and a Radeon HD 6450 or 6570 1gb GDDR3 passive cooling. You can play alot of old windows XP games in high settings and your system is silent. Kind regards😊

The e6600 was my intro into PC building. Only had a Celeron computer that my parents bought for us to use. A friend later on gave me his P4 build with 5500fx. Bought a 6600gs an wasnt happy with performance, new I needed to upgrade. Got an antec dragon case with gigabyte mobo, e6600, 4gb 667mhz ddr2 ram, and some cheap ati GPU. Later got an evga 9800gt. I was blown away when I fired up the Crysis disc it came with

Please note that GPUs with fanless heatsinks are not meant to be used in a fully passive setup. They always require case fans to provide at least some airflow over the heatsink. A nearby 120mm fan at low rpm will do just fine, and the system will remain inaudible.

With Diablo 2, patch v1.12 added a way to make it not require the CD. You have to copy some files manually though. Also, I would be using NoCD cracks wherever possible or at least emulate the drive in Daemon Tools - you might have to enable the advanced copy protection features in the settings like "Safedisc" and "Securom", etc. It will require Alcohol 120 mds/mdf images or CloneCD ccd images or similar if you need the copy protection to be intact and are not using a NoCD crack.

I'd love to do something similar with my E6300 running on a Gigabyte EP43-UD3L in an old "Pentium 4 Prescott compatible case" allowing me to underclocked it to 1.25Ghz (haven't played around with voltages yet though). It's only got a powersupply fan, the stock intel cooler fan, and a 120mm fan going, and it's ok for noise. I'm gonna invest in a large tower cooler, as well as some modern high quality "quiet' fans too, and hopefully get it even quieter :)

In 2008 I had an SLI setup with two 8800 GTS 512 GPUs and third-party passive heatsinks. The CPU was a QX9650 overclocked to 3.8Ghz. That had a large tower cooler on it and was relatively quiet. Not silent though

friend, its hard to come by these days, but there is an awesome 750 ti from palit - the kalmX model, with a huge passive cooler, and its just a perfect card, mine was even a great overclocker. I had the same model as a 1050ti some years later, but yeah, for XP its the perfect silent gpu!

GPUs with fanless heatsinks always require at least some airflow, even the kalmX. This build failed because of that.
@ShrineOfLife

@@looks-suspicious hey thank you for your 2cents - I would not say, that his build failed, but it leaves room to be optimised. regarding the kalmX, I did test both versions of it in different occasions/setups and you do not need an extra fan for it. hence, and I agree, you get much better results with an added fan. but in a case that big, it will work without fan without any hassle - you can even undervolt it and/or downclock it and still have a pleasant result for XP era games. me personally, I would have used the rear fan shown in the case, with around 800 rpm. cheers buddy

I am not an expert but there are multiple thermal sensors on the GPU. The temperature you see with the afterburner is the average °c. However techpowerup shows not the avg but the data from the hottest sensor that's why you see 120 degrees and no thermal throttling. Thanks for the video I'm looking forward to part2.

Just to point out one video card you might want to stay away from, while searching for components for the next silent PC: the HD6770 Silent Cell from Gigabyte. It has a passive cooler, but does need airflow to avoid going over 90C.

I have a fanless system (well semi), i5-11500T with Zalman FX70 cooler and 3050 6GB Kalmx, I can game on it and it is stable but scorchingly hot if I put my finger on any of those heatinks. Really not comfortable, and so I have 2 80mm exhaust fans on the case now, and another 80mm under the Kalmx, low speed and barely audiable. Frankly, I wouldn't recommend trying for a fanless system for games, not possible, for basic use, say office and web browsing, even media streaming, yes it can be done, but forget about gaming.

Passive PC is not good. Better to have low rpm running high quality FANs like Noctua NF-A12x25, Phanteks T30, maybe Arctic P12 Max on the budget side.
