I know someone who made an all oversized card deck with Zedruu the Greathearted. It’s all about giving people terrible gifts and the best part is because the cards are gigantic, it takes up a quarter of their available card space. It’s beautiful!

I recall a few years back my playgroup, long before we had anything that resembled a local game store, had a wall of these oversized commander cards just glued on it... It was interesting to watch them slowly turn into pringles over time. Aminatou did a lot better than estrid for some reason and the ur dragon is probably still there to this day! But through this bizarre turn of events I actually bothered to find out that you can get oversized sleeves, Mitch: Who knew? Me shouting at the monitor: I DID!!!!

Challenge: banned tribal. Only play cards that would be legal in the format were it not for an explicit ban. So cards like planes are off the list since they kinda just default don’t work, but things like grisel and time walk are fair game. For some added viability and fun, you could replace basics with duals. Love the vid btw

I tried a similar thing once with "Artist Tribal". 5c Un-Urza as "Head" of a Terese Nielsen tribal-deck. The biggest challenges with all those strategies are landbase and ramp. Used highquality proxies of her set of gurulands as my manabase. And she offers quite a lot of ramp with cards like Nature's Lore, Rampant Growth, Lotus Cobra and Garruk Wildspeaker. A real fun deck with a lot of unexpected cards.

I thought about this kind of deck a while back. I was going to use the planes chase cards as lands by assigning them a “color identity”. For example: bolas’s meditation realm would be a grixis land because of the bolas connection. You can tell what color the plane would produce by reading what it does. Then just ignore the abilities.

I don't remember if I was inspired by this, but I did end up building a Giants Tribal deck based around Kalemne, where I got some card stock, some 3.5x5 sleeves (I think Ultro Pro makes some?), and just proxied the whole thing. Using Magic Set Editor, I painstakingly recreated every card with updated rules text and a custom set icon, and took the opportunity to do some custom art on some cards as well. I used Windows built in photo printing to print them all out at 3.5x5" size. I even made a custom Elephant token for my Generous Gift, using a scene from a Looney Tunes cartoon of a drunk guy looking annoyed down at a small elephant. The cutting and sleeving was the worst, having to trim things down enough that they'll fit in a sleeve, but not so much they'd show the cardstock behind. The cardstock was also really rough, and ten times more difficult to sleeve than a normal Magic card. Since I also love oversized commanders, I recently printed an over-oversize Kalemne card at 5x7 and have it in a thin photo frame. It's a hit at my local game store on casual Commander nights, where I ask the whole table's permission to play an all-proxy deck. Some are apprehensive until I pull out the deck, plop down 99 sleeved oversized cards, and say it's Giants Tribal. (It's not actually very good, I've never won a game with it, as I've avoided proxying expensive cards, but it's fun to play and people have a blast playing against it.)

I have a mono color deck that is "Legendary Tribal". I cascade off the top till I hit my first legend and it's my commander for the game. I came to the conclusion to do it because of Unholy Citadel. I would love to see your take on "Legend tribal"

I actually built a functional 60 card deck with those 6x9 arena promo cards and yes it's hilarious to pull out. I got to build it when they were much mor affordable too, but never got to find my third and fourth copy of cadaverous bloom, and finding squandered resources was near inpossible for me to find past the first one I found.

Wow. This puts things into perspective a bit more on how many oversized releases they've made throughout the years. I'm surprised they haven't put out an oversized deck just for novelty like the mini sets. And finding oversized sleeves was a challenge a bit for me as well having sleeved the planechase and archenemy cards I own. 😋 Good job Mitch! 😄

I run an LGS. We actually started carrying thoes sleves for Transformers CCG...but as that is on hiatus, we just use them for decal packaging. Ask your LGS to order you a pack (they're cheep). 89mm x 127mm if your LGS is having trouble looking them up.

I have a 40 card mardu Magic deck in the size of the basic land cards Mitch mentions here. It wins most games I’ve played with it, but it does have a black lotus so there is that. I also gave close to 40 more oversized cards of the same size that are not in the deck. They used to give these away for FNM and some came in magazines (which monthly paper-back informative books that were usually geared toward certain hobbies, you can still find them for larger hobbies if look hard enough, six). I could probably build a Commander deck with more of them, but I don’t think any that I have are legendary creatures.

I actually had a similar idea a few (like 7?) years ago... I purchased something like 200 oversized cards back when the pre-con EDH decks came with 3 each, along with some mineral spirits and cotton balls. Because all of the oversized EDH cards are foil they are super easy to de-ink. The problem that I ran into after removing the ink was I couldn't figure out a good way to print directly onto the now shiny blank cards. XD EDIT: I called it my retirement deck. Who knows, maybe it will actually be finished by the time I am able to retire. lol

There are a few other problems that would come with making such a deck, the least worrisome being that most of those oversized cards are foil. And we know how well they age. On the bright side, that hypothetical deck would be a somewhat budget build considering how cheap the oversized cards are compared to their regular sized counterparts, though having to actually buy the lands (I mean, "proxied" lands) is a letdown. EDIT : I removed the sleeve size part due to not having watched to the end.

What if you use the cards meant for mfc for the deck. Have your big cards in a pile and the cards you wrote on as your library. I play an island (discard your small card with island written on it, find the large basic to be out in play. The cards you wrote on are the cards that are shuffled and represent the cards you want to play.

Ok, I've thought about this way too much and way too seriously: Keeping in mind that this is a ridiculous idea, and if the only cards you'd be allowed to proxy were basic lands, I was first thinking about Windgrace, but ultimately my choice for commander would be Yidris. With him at the helm you wouldn't care THAT much if there is an unusually high amount of lands in your deck. You'd have a "decent" amount of passable cards to play that ramp you or draw you cards. And you'd even theoretically be able to cascade into the M15 Challenge Garruk, if your playgroup is ok with you putting him in. You'd already be fighting an uphill battle as is. Like I said, the idea is ridiculous and the deck would be utterly terrible. But I'm still thinking about building it XD

Technically you could run the deck with the official proxy cards like from Zendikar Rising and use regular basics. Then whatever you draw just gets pulled from your massive pile of oversized cards.
