Yes we went on Wednesday. Been looking at used motorhomes since. If I was trying to buy new for under £60k I'd probably stick to the van conversions because I wouldn't really trust the build quality and having to deal with water ingress and warranty schemes that don't work on budget coachbuilts.

To tick every box we could order new, wait 12 months and pay more than we can afford OR look at used and make some level of compromise (because the previous owners didn’t make the decisions we would have made five years ago). No matter the cost of a MH they are not built well for the roads in the UK. I own a autotrail tribute 720 sports x, bought it second hand at 11k miles, brand new almost at £31000. I've had to fix faults due to some very poor designs. I then spent 5 grand converting it into a fully off grid home. With a full tilting solar system for the roof, thats 3 x 150 watt solar that tilts 4 directions. side 400 watt solar too with 2 different types of chargers for the limitum battery. Roof fed water system. Wood stove, plus diesel heating. Home cinema, pc, twin tub washing machine, Wood storage, coal storage. It was a concept to show you can live a normal life without ever needed power hook up or water. Also best to try and buy a euro 5 engine and not a euro 6 unless you have endless cash for dpf replacement.

If you are about up Scotland I can meet you and show you the van. The roof fed system was simple to fit, to convert the roof cost £28, has a filter system before the main water tank and a uv system after the pump, only use the uv 3 times a year. Its autofill and replacing a 15 micron filter 3-4 times a year. It does 1 pt of water every 20-30 seconds depending on the filter type. In the summer if it not raining i can pump water from river. The solar produces up to 38 amps in mid winter when the sum is out and my top tip, if you going to run a battery bank, have the system switchable to one battery for winter months. Go lithium only, AGM and leads can't handle off grid for long. Your video was interesting, it showed me how modern vans are inside, shocked tbh, it took me 18 months to find the van motorhome, one not too large and one that could be converted. You can make a van be a permanent off grid home with some out of the box old school thinking.@@HermanHitstheRoad

We had a camper van didn’t like the layout, we didn’t need 2 extra belted seats I would have liked a couch seat or units. so we bought a motorhome, we have a pilote 626 it’s compact but again we don’t use the oven or the shower, we have upgraded it to lithium with extra solar, but it is very big square box. So now we are looking to go back to a camper van. The problem is we don’t use the shower, or the oven in fact we would prefer a van without gas, more Solar with lithium batteries, go electric and compressor fridge, with a garage. The main manufacturers have their heads in the sand and only build vans with gas, wet rooms extra belted seats and no garage. Having a van built is way above our price range. They have gone up by 1\3 in the last couple of years. What are your thoughts on no gas vans/ motorhomes?

Thanks for commenting, @janettesmith4570. I have no problem with gas or no gas motorhomes. It just depends on how you intend to use the van, where you're going to go and when you're going to go. If you're relying on electric then you'll need the sun and winter isn't a great time for solar panels. So you might be reliant on EHU during the winter. Also, batteries are heavy and will add to your payload depending on how many you have but the same could be said for gas bottles/tanks. Buying electricity is much more expensive (if a campsite charges you) than gas.

A few posters have passed comment not only on the poor quality but also the poor layouts. Adz mentioned that one bed filled about 1/4 of the available room. I know above cab beds are not for everyone, but having it up there leaves a lot of room for day use, and because hot air rises, it stays warmer at night. I cant understand why manufacturers seem to be moving away from them completely.

Is that auto trail not a camper van ? I assume a camper is a panel van even if it’s a low top, high top or pop top. A motorhome is a cab van front with a coach built on the rear and a A class motorhome is were the cab van front is integrated with a coach build body .

With all respect to everyone. I've built my campervan for £30k by myself. Only the interior except base. You can survive in on the Moon for a one month without going out (Moon's gear are not included) , (Fridge and freezer are not included as is cold outside), (Heating is allowed only when Lunar eclipse, 3 days average, as Moon is closer to Sun then Earth) No bills, no council tax, no annoying neighbours. No guarantee. But fun as hell for retirement 😘

Mines a 2014 tribute as stated below, it has the mid shower and kitchen layout, so it has a front or rear living room, The front was converted into a main living room, removed the seating leaving just one, bedroom is the overhead cab, they are well laid out with separate shower and loo. I,m seeing the newer types are not laid out well tbh and lack windows, mine has 9 windows, think when it was new cost £48k, what i don't like about the van is the cheap plastic skirts which get taken out either by me or rain and snow. Not sure why they can justify asking 60 k for vans and most of these on this video where campers! I bought mine to live in as i have no home, would never touch a van otherwise in a country where you can't do nothing anymore.@@Nagsheadwarrior

WARNING before you splash out £60K+. By 2028 46% of all vans sold must be fully electric. Otherwise manufactures incure a £15K fine for every non ZEV van sold. This will mean petrol stations will begin to disappear or be converted to EV charging. Your loverly van may crash in value. . .

@HitstheRoadI wish it were nonsense. These are the annual ZEV mandate targets to 2030. UK and EU wide. Our government were being a bit coy on stating the new ban on ICE vehicles extending to 2035. These are the figures for vans: 2024 10%, 2025 16%, 2026 24%, 2027 34%, 2028 46%, 2029 58%, 2030 70%. The figures for cars are even tighter. I did a make a small error, it's £15K fine for cars and £9K for vans. I'm afraid it's going to be another 'ULEZ' fiasco, affecting thousands of van owners who just didn't see it coming!

Yes, they are expensive but a plane ticket you'll only use the once, @ImbWeb. A motorhome/campervan will last years and you can use it for weekends and not just a two week holiday.

I have a 2002 VW 2.5 Trooper Autosleeper, but the quality of the new vans appears to be be nothing like as good as mine.
