This whole series shows us we're NOT powerless. If we take things into our own hands, we can rescue these machines from the landfills and do our bit to improve things. I ran the OpenCore Legacy version of Monterey for many months on my 2011 Macmini5,1. Now, I've switched to Linux, which runs with a bit more snap and speed than the beautifully-patched macOS Monterey. If you're up to it, make more of these types of videos if you like. I'll watch 'em! Around the 5:10 mark you said , and I quote "I am amazed at how well this version works"... My question is simple... why does Apple not permit this software to be installed without patches in the first place? It twists my mind that companies do this. People are still getting around it, why not make it official... with a warning, say 'This machine will be slower than expected due to its age'... I use Apple devices, but this screws me up big time.
@gregordiseth6651

Two (three) reasons: Planned obsolescence. Apple forces consumers to buy new machines to keep the revenue stream flowing. Two: Perceived performance. Apple doesn't want consumers to experience the OS running more slowly on legacy hardware. Three: Apple would have to adapt to support older machines (drivers) like OLCP does. I do understand with the shift to new architecture (M chips) - when Apple drops X86 support entirely with OS updates, these OLCP style patches will no longer work on Intel machines.

I really like your channel and being following for some years now. Especially those kind of videos I am really looking forward to because they show two things, one, you can get working tech for a small amount of money and two, you don’t always need the most modern tech to get the job done. It always depends on what you want to do and especially for light tasks you don’t need maximum performance at all. I found a Late 2009 21,5“ iMac for 37,40€ including shipping a few days ago on eBay which especially here in Germany is not always that easy and I am really looking forward to it. The device shall get in here on Tuesday the next week. It will be the very first time I will play around with OCLP and I am very excited how this puppy will do. post sandy bridge release mac (2011) are probably a good place to find perfectly usable machines for less than 150 bucks. I'm a bit skeptic about using ventura with the same performance as with the original OS but firefox support was just dropped for high sierra which mean you can still use it for some time with it.

Can’t find any videos of you talking about installing OpenCore which I find surprising for someone who has so many videos about old Macs. Are you just scared of getting in Apples naughty list?

I wish it was as easy to upgrade the OS on an unsupported iPad as it is on the MacBooks.

You could have done Ventura, I got it on my sister's mid-2010 17 inch, and it works pretty well, with animations and things. The OpenCore team did a pretty good job with that patch. The machine has been in my family for almost 4 years and still works fine. I want to do one of those projects too, see if I still got it. I used to do my own fixes until I got into non-upgradable machines.

I have a 17” 2010. It’s a great machine and it nice to use. The UI elements are quite small though. However the speakers rival a lot of modern laptops I’ve heard. Currently have it running Big Sur.

Fat unibody MBPs were great. I got into Apple computers when they were the previous generation, and the upgradeability was crucial for budget macbooking :)

After watching Luke's video I got curious and had a look on eBay myself. So I just got exactly the same one today which I also bought on eBay, for 49€. The offer did mention a new 250 GB SSD, a new 3rd party charger (purchased by the seller and directly sent to me from Amazon) and a brand new 3rd party battery! And much to my delight it is in absolutely mint condition, it has the non-glossy display and the higher display resolution. The machine didn't come with the original Apple box but this would have been just too much to make everything perfect! 😅 I'm very pleased so far. I am going to upgrade it to 16 GB RAM (from 6 GB) and macOS 14 Ventura using OpenCore Legacy Patcher as I did with my other MBP 15 (Late 2008) and MBP 13 (2011) and my iMacs (2011 and 2015 models. I know my Mac mini's M1Silicon chip from 2020 is more powerful, but these Unibody machines are so rewarding. And just for the sake of it I will get a 2012 MBP Retina next to complete my collection of Intel Macs, although I don't really need it ... 😅

I got an Core2Duo Intel MBP from a friend. My MBP has 8gb of RAM. I took out the HDD and installed an SSD. I could not get macOS Lion to install on the MBP but I did get Kubuntu Linux to install on it no problem. My Core2Duo MBP has a fan issue of being really noisy (I think due to the graphics card failing?). I can browse the web, watch KZbin videos in 480p with a little bit of lag. I am getting into this used MBP. I plan on buying a 2012 i5 Intel MBP from Ebay in the future. My main Mac is a 2019 4K retina 21.5in iMac with 8gb of RAM. I plan on buying an Apple Silicon Mac in the future when my 2019 iMac is no longer supported by Apple.
