Been a lot of discussion on how DALL-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion will affect art in general and comics specifically! I go through some ai comics I've seen, how successful they've been, and try out Midjourney to see if there's anything useful I can get out of it while developing a sci-fi comic project I'll be doing in the next few years- Helios Pact.

I've been playing with it non-stop for the last 10 days. Got some good results for a panel to panel but none of them without the need for some correction. I am a writer and it helped me to communicate better with the artist. Unfortunately, I can't fix it myself, and the artist I mostly work likes it much more for reference than as a final illustration. But it is promising.

I agree- and it's cool that you were able to get something that got good panel to panel results! I sure wasn't! But I was actually putting together a video soon about approaching comic art for writers that aren't artists- and the main takeaway as I'm researching is that just trying things like this makes the writer/artist communication SO much easier!

As someone who has no drawing abilities, but a good bit of photoshop experience, I can say that there is a way to get some decent results if you have the right prompts (and a whole lot of clean up on with a photo editing tool). I'm currently working on a webcomic (haven't released it yet, but hopefully first chapter will be done soon) and to me the results are good enough to where I can tell a coherent story.

I can absolutely see that working- some clean up in photoshop could go a very long way in keeping things consistent panel to panel!

I've published two comics so far using MidJourney, Lungflower and The Eldridge. I generate images in MidJourney and then tweak and assemble them in Photoshop. The technology still has a long way to go, and it's a challenge, but it's very possible to do.

how do you maintain the characters continuity?
@bloodstreamcity
@bloodstreamcity 2 жыл бұрын
@@jefaus328 That's one of the challenges for sure. It's a combination of using actor names (typically one that generates consistent results yet not recognizable as that person), getting specific with details such as clothing, and then fixing small things in Photoshop as a last resort. There are certain things the ai just isn't good at yet, and therefore genres that are much more difficult. For instance anything with specific costumes (superhero, some fantasy and scifi) might be too much trouble until the ai can do them consistently. But to be honest, at the speed it's improved in just the last few months, it might be sooner than we think.

as it stands for now i really am impressed in what it can do ..do i believe it could put artist out of business... dont think so, it is just another tool...i can imagine it a year down the road.. but again .. very impressive!

Agreed! Tough to see this getting quite the versatility it would need to do panel to panel work anytime soon. With design though, my alternative would have been sketches of 20 or so patterns in a sketchbook, then a folder of reference of similar designs or a pnterest board, and basically combining my sketch ideas and patterns with those reference directions. I see the midjourney process as just streamlining that a lot better- and doing everything from concept to pre-press myself, I'm always looking for ways to streamline without sacrificing quality or vision!

Yeah. Um. It's not going to put artists out of work. 99 percent of the stuff it creates, looks cool because it was created by ai, but none of it would pass as competent if it had been created by an artist

My favorite result from midjourney was "Russell Crowe riding a Crow painterly" Not perfect but would love to do a paint up of it.

wonderful video, I have started a graphic novel using midjourney, am 56 pages in and thinking maybe the final result needs to be modulated a bit, or given to an artist as reference

That's an approach I think makes sense with where midjourney is right now- getting something that's usable as a basis for final art or even just to help communication to an artist. As an artist- it would help out a lot if writers (not all, of course) approached things a little more visually. Putting someone- and this could be a comic writer or a project manager looking for concept art, logos, storyboards in a marketing dept- in a position where they can generate basic visuals forces them to engage with what the visual they're looking for will actually have in a more concrete way instead of just sort of stopping at "well, I can't draw". That helps a lot!

Thank you for sharing this insightful video on your use of AI generators in conjunction with writing your own comic books. I agree these AI image generators can be a big plus if you're already into comic creation, for inspiration or even refining characters or backgrounds. Some of these can also work with a predefined sketch. Combining different image editors (to copy, paste, mask, layer and color correct), you can also use public domain photos or drawings for your source material,. Than that balcony and high towers on a castle or a lot closer than you think. A great deal of new comics, in very differing quality is what we're going to see next I think. What a comic book store owner once told me, is going to become much more relevant from now on. He told me, there are way more good comic book artists than there are good writers. So if one's not good at drawing, go on and become a good writer. 🙂

Yeah- I think where it is now is, at least for me, a streamlining of the design process where I'd make a pinterest board for reference or a folder of images, and use elements of those as inspiration in character designs!

People are doing just that already with AI Art generators. I think using these tools to add modifications to pre-existing works of art is a far more powerful usage. Then just using or depending on text prompt generated art forms. My opinion anyway.
