Really enjoyed this. I use water mixable oil paints and whilst I am not keen on Winsor & Newton's water mixable oil paints I have found their thinner, that is designed to be used with them, very helpful in my early leaner layers, and water mixable linseed oil in later layers. Look forward to seeing more videos, thank you. I am mostly using Cobra and Holbein's Aqua Duo paints.

I'm so glad you brought this up. I exclusively use water soluble oils. I'm interested to see when you add a little medium, how that changes things.

I'll have that video up soon (it worked well!).

I’ve recently started painting with the Winsor and Newton Artisan water miscible paints. I tried using just water but found their thinner made for these paints works much better for me and goes on smoother. I would be afraid that the paint might lose its integrity 🤔. I also work large in acrylics but wanted to explore these for smaller paintings, especially portraits.

Next time I'm going to try the WMO thinner for the imprimatura. 👍

You are NOT supposed to mix water into water miscible oil paint when actually painting. You are supposed to CLEAN the brushes with just soap and water after your painting session.

👋Good morning from Germany, Layne, well, the imprimatura looks good ! - There's a German painter (Brennerfineart) who uses linseed oil to thin the water mixable oil colors down a bit and it works quite well. He wrote that to me when I was telling him that I wouldn't want to use water for thinning. A small or larger drop of linseed oil would do the job, depending on the size of the space you want to cover. - Thank you for this video, Layne. Have a great weekend❤

Hi Layne, wow I was going to email you this week,☺, to ask what you would do with Cobra. So happy you did this video. I am currently working on your cloud exercise in Cobra, talk about perfect timing. The painting i'm doing is small, I thinned the imprimatura with medium, it worked well at that size just had to wait overnight for it to be dry.

Sir, thank you for your video. What is your drawing done with? Charcoal? Have you used fixative? Also, what brand of water mixable oil are you using? I’ve just bought some Schmincke Norma Blue and wonder if you have tried them. Kind Regards.
@LayneJohnsonStudioАй бұрын
You're very welcome! Yes, charcoal. And yes, I fixed it with Workable Fixatif spray from Krylon. No, I haven't tried the Schmincke yet, but I've heard good things about them.

I love it as it is with just the toned canvas! Question. If you were painting seascapes, would you still tone your canvas first with the burnt sienna? I paint mostly seascapes.. (in oils)

Good day Layne . I use water soluble oils all the time but never use water while painting , I do use mediums. Mostly quick dry medium . I do use water and dish soap for cleaning my brushes . When I first start using there paints I tried using water but I didn`t like the feel of them once they dried . The surface tended to feel like pastel and would easily rub off onto my fingers .
@LayneJohnsonStudioАй бұрын
For the last one I did I added a little bit of Liquin, I found bonded to the surface of the canvas much better.

I use water to thin water mixable oils. It doesn't work quite as good as oms, but well enough for most of my paintings. I find it's a little harder with canvas because the water gets absorbed, so I tend to use gesso boad instead.
@LayneJohnsonStudioАй бұрын
May need to gesso your canvas more?

Great video, with water mixable oils it’s important to mix the water in a little longer then you use to do with solvents. The oils and the water have to “bind” together, then it will work just fine.

I'm a representational painter, which means I'm painting real things and real locations. So I take lots and lots of photos of the areas in Texas that I like to paint. I use those photos as a starting point reference - combined with my own experience, memory of the place, and imagination. And I spend a lot of time composing the scene I'm going to paint, so I'm referring to that as I paint. (But less so as I go along.)
