Voice professor here. The thing that makes anchor voice sound like anchor voice, regardless of language, is the fact that you are flexing the walls of your nasopharynx. You’re literally broadening and stiffening the airway. When you look past your uvula and see the smooth pink wall, that’s the nasopharynx, or the only part of it you can see. It is the part of the throat that connects the larynx to the nasal passages and it’s degree of flex ion is what creates or removes resonance from the voice. So when it is open it provides natural resonance because you are tightening and smoothing the walls of your natural resonator which allows the sound waves you produce when speaking to reflect off of a smoother firmer surface. Think of it like this: in rooms with a lot of soft upholstery and pillows, there is no room resonance. Rooms with smooth walls like a gymnasium or a bathroom have a lot more resonance. When you stretch your pharyngeal walls, you give your own voice the same type of resonance naturally. As for pitch of your Spanish-speaking voice, that has more to do with your personal Muscle memory of how you speak Spanish. You can lower the pitch deliberately (like choosing to sing a song in a lower key) and open your pharyngeal walls by simply focusing on sounding slightly lower in pitch and feeling that stretch, like a stove pipe in your throat. Your voice is beautiful in both languages! Here are some thoughts from a SLP/voice therapist perspective. It may be harder to add that richness to your voice in Spanish for a couple reasons that come to mind: 1) Spanish is evenly stressed (no long drawn out vowels in stressed syllables like in English), so it’s harder to give your voice time to rest and easier to speed up. This can accumulate tension and cause the pitch of the voice to raise. 2) In Spanish, you speak with a higher tongue position. That will make it harder for you to naturally add richness to the voice (which is usually accomplished by keeping more space in the throat and mouth). You’ll notice you inflect up higher in Spanish, so you could play around with inflecting down more, or regulating how high you inflect so it doesn’t go as high in pitch (particularly at the ends of phrases and start of new ones). You could also experiment with keeping more space in the mouth when you speak Spanish, with an emphasis on keeping the back of the tongue a little lower and the roof of the mouth a little higher! It’s a little more complex than these couple things, but hope that’s helpful!

Apparently a lower tone in Japanese is considered rude and not very feminine. Maybe it’s something along those lines. Perhaps because of the varied tones of each language, it’s hard to do it! It's because stressed sounds are different in Spanish. Sometimes you have to attack the vowels in other languages in order to pronounce them correctly. This is not so with English, where the vowel sounds change. You're amazing in any language.

My guess is that you learned Spanish and English simultaneously, but Spanish at home in an informal setting and English at school. I'm Dominican as well, a native Spanish speaker. While I was advancing with my French, my Spanish was suffering but my English was not. My French professor told me that my Spanish was getting affected because while I learned both English and Spanish simultaneously, the English was taught with intention which stresses retention with little regression. To this day, I speak French at an advanced level (not fluent though), English is my preferred language and I speak Spanish like a regular Dominican native, but I do "frenchify" some words in Spanish still, even now when not living in France anymore. I don't know how accurate this is but it's what my La Sorbonne French professor explained to me.

It's partly cultural, but it's also due to the pitch most words in Japanese have compared to English words. English uses stress accents on all words. Daugh-ter ↑↓. O-ver ↑↓. Dessert ↓↑. Dic-tion-ar-y ↑↓↓↓. It's very up and down, and there's never consecutive ups, only downs. Meanwhile Japanese works on a pitch accent system and tends to stay up for much longer. Not all words even have an accent that drops down. O-ha-yo~u go-za-i-ma-su ↑↑↑↑ ↑↑↑↑'↓. Ko-ne-ko ↑↑'↓. I-nu ↑↑'. Ki-re~i ↑'↓↓. Ta-i-yo~u ↑'↓↓↓. So on average, the voice is placed higher when speaking Japanese than English.

Same! My voice is much higher in Japanese especially when I’m doing keigo. When I’m casual, I get close to my natural lower pitch but it’s still a bit high. I think it’s because Japanese has a smaller mouth movement and has way more alveolar and palatal sounds compared to English so it changes how my voice sounds. I’m going from my ancient linguistics knowledge from my undergrad so that’s my guess.

In Spanish languages you're forced to keep the tongue near the teeth which allows the whole throat to produce sound, including the tops of the chords that brighten and heighten the pitch. Also, I think the romance languages are inherently more animated and require that variance in pitch and inflection. Notice how most Spanish anchors speak really high and really fast. & It works for the language.

Its pretty cool, us Spanish speakers do speak on a higher tone and the tone you used and the diction is just like Spanish reporters do it 👍🏻That tone and diction in Spanish is the equivalent of the presentator voice in English.

I think in essence it’s in what order you learned things. Gifts you developed naturally vs the ones that you develop intentionally and later in life. I think how certain info is stored determines how we’re able to access it in skill level. It’s all muscle memory but the lessons are layered. Similar to a vocal range. It's because of where we place our tongue. To speak Spanish you place your tongue to the front of your palate so I think that affects the acoustics. Also, languages are more than vocabulary and grammar and I think that affects things

As a voice teacher for 20years it all comes from your Diaphragm and controlling your volume through breath control. Practice breathing exercises in both languages and your English Tone will match your Spanish Tonality naturally over time. The only difference you will notice is the pronunciation but tonality will be the same.

A reason for the tone discrepancy may be that English is a fairly guttural language, meaning there are a lot of sounds that come from the back of the throat, so it’s easier to drop your tone since a lower tone also means word placement may be further back in the mouth. But Spanish, a lot of the consonants are pronounced close to the front of the mouth, soft th’s and crisp c’s that have to be pronounced forward in the mouth, meaning it’s not nearly as easy to drop the tone and speak in a low voice.

I believe this is due to linguistic relativism. It’s a theory that one’s personality is shaped by the language spoken, specifically the mother tongue. Polyglots and bilingual speakers, will often share a scene of personal shifts when moving from one language to another. Some expressions (emotional) are more intrinsic in particular languages. Even when fluency is equivalent. It sounds like your true expression is in Spanish, thus making it more difficult to mask or manipulate how you present yourself. In other words, it’s harder not to keep it real when at “home” in your language.

I'm Cuban,/Puerto Rican, Spanish speaking as well. I think the American standard English voice is an affectation for many ethnic people. We imitate the speech of others outside of our community thinking it makes us sound "educated" it's really conformity. Spanish is a naturally sensual earthy language. English is not. And American English is definitely not sensual. When you hear Jorge Ramos on Univision his reporter voice is the same as his voice at home. I lived in Spain and the way we talk in an office setting is the way we talk at home with abuela. There is no code switching in Spanish. Well Cubaniche is that exception😂

I'm no voice teacher, but i think it is because in Spanish and English projection it's done differently. On English is from the chest and Spanish it's more head projected. I think on both languages you can work it to interchange them

It's very easy actually, what you need to do is imagine you're speaking more like a sport announcer. The anchor voice in Spanish is essentially a sport announcer in Spanish.
