Bathroom ventilation fans should exhaust to the exterior of the building and should also run at least 10 minutes after every bath or shower, to prevent moisture related issues inside the home. I live in north Alabama and my builder did the same thing. Bath vent fans are vented to the attic. I am shocked the home inspector let this slide!

@@KitKatinBama Depending on jurisdiction, this may not be a Code Requirement. Building Inspectors only inspect for Code Issues. Home Inspectors are not Code Inspectors, but sometimes Code will cross paths of our inspections. FYI: Code is minimum standards and not maximum standards. However there are many Home Inspectors that will not call this out as an issue, but I do because it is a hazard to the structure. Thanks for you comments.

I’m in Texas and my home inspector called out that the bathroom exhaust vents were vented into the attic. He pointed out that current code requires them to be vented outside of the house but when my house was built it wasn’t code. He said because my roof is so tall and I have two powered roof vents that I’d probably never have an issue. I am going to vent them to the outside of the house anyway.

Good info..Here's a nifty what would you do with this - question. I just bought a house in southern GA and am unable to get in my own attic (old broad.. bad knees). I found out a couple days ago, from the contractor that is installing my whole house (ceiling mount/louvered) attic fan that, when the previous owners put a metal roof on, they did not remove the old roof. It's still up there. *eye roll* None of the vents.. kitchen/bath etc went to the new roof... everything vents into the old roof attic area first. To properly vent to the outside, would you remove the old roof or just go through it?

Because most roof systems vary, I recommend you contact a qualified roofing contractor to evaluate the best way to do this. All vents should extend to the exterior of the dwelling.

I found mine vented into my attic but best find yet…. I found my GAS water heater vented in attic not through roof. Good times

So what if my attic has louvers on both sides of the house and vents on the back roof. Would the bathroom venting into the attic still be a problem?

This is a 70 year old house btw. The wood in the attic haven't rotted yet.

Its subjective, it may be fine but may not depending on how well the attic is ventilated. However, I think the best thing to do is to vent it to the exterior.

Mine just blow straight into the insulation since 1997. No issues when we removed and replaced the insulation. Still blowing into insulation. I guess my question is if I have no issues since 1997 why would it matter to vent through roof. I have 2 powered attic fans and other holes in the roof letting air out. All my soffits are correctly vented with baffles.

Thanks for sharing this info, having a proper vented attic may mitigate the need for external venting, especially if you live in a dryer climate.

I live in southern CA and just replaced the old exhaust fan. That unit must have been 30 years old. There was no ducts at all. It just blew into the attic. I found no trace of mold. The roof was recently replace where the roofer added extra ventilation…
