Fertilizing the lawn when it is hot out - will that burn it? Can you burn a lawn with fertilizer in heat? FREEDOM is an excellent fert for all grass types in summer:
yardmastery.co...
Following the recommended rate of 3lbs/1000. (spreader settings are on the bag) you are giving your lawn a cool 1/2 lb of N which is going to give you a nice green but not overly push anything.
If your lawn is under more severe stress, then Stress Blend is an excellent option as well:

What a preposterous bunch of nonsense. You seriously think I'm going to believe advertisers, packaging, and a fertilizer salesmen dressed up as a KZbinr over SCIENCE? "I've read dozens of fertilizer labels." How many scientific papers about turfgrass have you read? How many have you read about fertilizing in the summer?
@TheLawnCareNut
@TheLawnCareNut 5 ай бұрын
You sound like an elitist. For sure, I'm not college educated, just a common man like most. That said, what claim did I make in the video that can be refuted by science? and aren't labels designed to be interpreted by the common man?
@coonhound_pharoah
@coonhound_pharoah 5 ай бұрын
@Thelawncarenut Packaging is intended to SELL product. You are literally a salesperson, not "the common man." You're trying to sell fertilizer in this very video. It is very much the opposite of elitist to advocate for truth which saves people money instead of trying to sell more bags of fertilizer to the naive.

@@coonhound_pharoah, I assume you must be able to provide some proof, or perhaps point to a scientific paper you have read, that fertilizing turfgrass in the summer is detrimental.

@@TheLawnCareNut The label is intended to SELL the product, provide the legally required information, and nothing else. It is not intended to give best practices. It is not intended to provide advice producing optimal results. You can't seriously believe lack of noting on packaging the suboptimal results produced by fertilizing most lawns across the USA during the heat of summer is meaningful. You seem to be claiming a product's package has everything on it but that simply isn't true, and you know it. But as a fertilizer salesman you gotta toe that company line don't ya? "They would definitely put that on the package..." No, they wouldn't. You are either extremely naive or deliberately lying in this statement. Fertilizer companies are happy to sell fertilizer to fools who will ruin their lawn in the summer only to buy more fertilizer in the fall. They will not put information on the package which might inhibit sales at ANY time of year. Believing otherwise is absurdly naive. You go on for most of this video talking about temperature, and temperature of fertilizer, which is an irrelevant red herring. The burning from nitrogen is not a burn caused by temperature but a chemical burn caused by too much salts in the soil. Talking about the temperature of the fertilizer basically is announcing you have no clue what you are talking about, or you are purposefully distracting people to sell product. Throughout the video you ignore the fact that the issue with applying fertilizer in the heat of summer is the suboptimal turfgrass this produces pretty much EVERYWHERE outside of your neighborhood. You talk about burn continually as if it is the relevant issue, but it isn't. It's a red herring you use to distract naive people and get them to buy more product. You talk as if your lawn is a representative lawn but it isn't. Fertilizing a cool season lawn in the summer will cause the lawn to excessively top grow during times of stress and use too many carbohydrates in the process. It literally weakens the turf. It's not that you said anything that "contradicts" science. It's that you're avoiding the science about this subject altogether by talking about irrelevant things like fertilizer burn and not addressing the ACTUAL effects of fertilizing in the summer in the VAST MAJORITY of your audience's case. And seriously, if you think packaging provides all the meaningful information about a product, you must have been born yesterday. But hey, you go ahead and keep putting on a facade (a rich salesman pretending to be a "common man"...give me a break) and saying any nonsense you have to just to make a buck off your audience. It's obvious you're just here to sell fertilizer, not educate anyone about anything real.

I live in East Central Florida and I started this season with a very marginal lawn. Neighbors were using lawn care companies and their lawns looked great. I decided I was going to be consistent in following Allyn’s recommendations through his Yard Mastery App utilizing Liquid fertilization and Flagship granular. I’ve now caught up to the professionals and starting to dominate my neighbors. I just follow the yard mastery app and it tells me what product to throw down. I read the directions on the label of the product and when completed entered into the App and it tells me what product to throw down next and a target date to do so. If I can do it you all can too. I’m spending a whole heck of a lot less money than my neighbors with their professional lawn services. Thank you Allyn.

Allyn, want to thank you for your videos. Here's a quick lawn success story from northern Louisiana. Past videos of yours explained how to feed/maintain a lawn for beginners like me using off the shelf brands. My neighbor for 4 years never applied anything, and cut his grass way too low in order to hide the weeds. Then our new HOA kicked in and his weedy bermuda lawn suddenly didn't comply. I started turning it around within a few months with the heaviest recommended dosages of two separate applications of Scott's Triple Action granular, and one heaviest recommended app of Anderson's post-emergent granular with nitrogen, all three were 5-6 weeks apart. Then I hit it with Image weed killer spot spraying to treat the worst spurge and creeping charlie imaginable. While the lawn is about 75% fixed and a ways to go, the improvement is amazing. Yesterday two guys stopped by to ask me what I did. This fall I'm thinking of adding Flagship, a pre-emergent, and an insect control granular. Thank you again for the knowledge you imparted, I would have never had the confidence to thrower down this aggressively, and it has worked.

How many days/weeks between fert application and weed killer application? Thanks!

I’m trying to turn my yard around. If I fertilize will weeds benefit? Should I kill weeds first or promote grass growth. I’ve always heard tall grass will choke weeds out. I like in the Bluegrass states.

Kind of disappointed. Expecting to see you and Brett in wrestling costumes, talking smack about who gets to do the promo for a new Yard Mastery product, and all I got was this rational, informative lawn care content.

One thing I am not sure about when a label says 'Don't apply when the temperature is above 85' . Is that ok to apply in the morning when it's cooler but during the day it's going to be 90+?
@TheLawnCareNut
@TheLawnCareNut 3 жыл бұрын
yes exactly, you would just apply during a cooler part of the day. In these cases, I prefer evening because the temps will stay down for a good 8-10 hours after the app too.

I was wondering this too. I held off on a fungicide app because of my misunderstanding. Thanks for asking the question!

Is it best to cut the lawn first before applying fertilizer? Wet first before applying?

The only problem I ever have with granular is getting it through the turf. Even mini prill gets caught on top but that's because it's couch at 6mm. Takes a couple of good waterings.

I have that problem as well. I just take my blower and go around the yard to open the grass up and let the prills fall through.

So can I apply in the afternoon, and then water in the following morning? Trying to stick to my water day for water restriction purposes...

you can fertilize in the summer, provided you water it. The lawn care companies in my area will only drop summer fertilizer if they can see you have been watering. Otherwise yards gets damaged and customer calls up complaining their yard is burned.

We moved from Southwestern Ohio to Western Ky in 2010. I'm not sure what it is, I've noticed that weeds are bad in yards around here, Owensboro to be more specific, and I've also noticed that I hardly ever see anyone watering their lawns here. Maybe more and more people are getting automatic sprinkler systems but I don't really think that's what it is. I remember a lot more yards with sprinklers going to town in Ohio than I notice here and not sure why.

*Don't forget a spreader that doesn't regulate as it should. It happened to me, I won't mention the brand, but I did get several years of good service from it. Because of the size of my yard and having a couple of landscaping spots in the middle of the yard I use a drop spreader. I was applying my final higher nitrogen fert for the spring (TTTF) and I didn't notice as I started out pushing, but suddenly I realized I'm going through too much fert! I reset my calibration and tested (3 times.) nope, way to much fert dropping. That thing was disassembled and in the trash it went. Sure enough, that area was BURN! Just like the ol' Deep Purple song. Spent a month looking into a "better" drop spreader and found one. Gandy Agriculture makes drop spreaders. They are expensive, but the calibration system seems to be dead on and simple. So far, it does a great job. My son is very interested in it. I told him, save your money or wait. It'll be headed your way after your older sister reads my Will/Living Trust.* 😁
