I always enjoy playing an opponent who doesn’t realize, in most situations, just how powerful two connected passed pawns are. I had an opponent who had only a rook and king on the board. after I sacrificed my rook to create 3 connected passers in the C, D and E files, I only has those 3 pawns and my king right behind them on the board. As we started to play that endgame, my opponent began to get irritated. He angrily asked me why I didn’t just resign since my composition was “completely lost. He said I was a bad sport for making him waste him time to win. About 5 min later, after he was defeated, he through his room into the floor before knocking his chair over and storming out of the library. There were many other regulars there and , for obvious reasons, as his behavior here was FAR from a one time thing, most didn’t like the guy I’d just beaten. I saw many smiles and got many pats on the back. Gotta admit it felt really good.

Arturo Pomar Salamanca was having the tournament of his life at the Interzonal Tournament of 1962 . He leaded the tournament for half and beyond, but he had no seconds to help him prepared the games and the games adjourned. He crashed in the last rounds, and even dropped from the qualifications places. Arturo was a mailman in his native Spain, with zero support from the government and the spanish society.

interesting about his opponent (whom fischer, showing his lack of character, ridiculed for being a postman) died only recently, almost certainly the last human who had any close relationship with Alekhine -- Alekhine would be 130 now and his most famous student lived 80 years beyond Alekhine's death -- Alekhine was a direct link with 19th century chess and while he never played Steinitz (probably) he knew and played every subsequent world champ until his death required selecting a new one who ended up being Botvinnik.
