Oh that was so lovely . It was great seeing places in Edinburgh . I grew up there and actually went to Gillespie’s primary and secondary school ( the new building ) so the book and film The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie has always been of interest .

I hadn't seen this video before but it just popped up on my recommendation list. I assume it's due to Maggie Smith's death on Friday.
@paristen8556Ай бұрын
Fascinating to see the original shooting locations. Muriel Spark herself went to James Gillespie's girls' school, where she got a lot of the material for the novel (as she explains in her less fictional memoir). A couple of decades later (1950s-60s) I went to another girls' school just up the road, George Watson's Ladies [ha ha], then on George Square, and though we didn't have an exact Jean Brodie equivalent on the staff we had plenty of eccentric spinsters, you could have concocted a Jean Brodie out of any half-dozen of them. And we had male staff members pretty similar to the two in the book and film. The novel came out while I was in senior school, and I remember we had impromptu readings from it in the prefects' common room, accompanied by shrieks of laughter. Steve, it's sad of course that your video is popping up now, but I was very pleased to watch it.

Well done! A close friend used to live in the short row of tenements beside the school gates in Henderson Row, and there was a great view of 'Marcia Blane's' from the windows at the back. And nice touch, Steve, starting beside the current guise of the school Muriel Spark attended.

Reminds me of many years ago when I lived in Bruntsfield and then Morningside in Edinburgh. I first learned the peculiarities of the different accents of English and Scots English. I always loved the accents of the 'Ladies of Morningside', which was quite a prim and proper area in those days and which this movie reminds me of. A Scotsman told me a joke that "Morningside ladies think that sex is what the coal came in....."... a kind of sound 'joke' on how 'sacks' would be pronounced by a Morningside person [and can only be understood if you know that coal fires were universal in those days].

Sadly I stupidly looked down the comments before I watched this so went into it already knowing the answer but nevertheless very interesting (fairly sure I'd have got it by the third clue....). Coincidentally although I must have walked along Henderson row literally dozens of times I only noticed the school building very recently, apparently it was originally built as The Institution for the Deaf & Dumb which was subsequently merged with Donaldson's Hospital with their more conspicuous premises on West Coates at which point the building passed over to the Edinburgh Academy. Also never heard of Banrbougle Castle before, always some new facts on your great little channel !!!

Used to go into Boroughmuir by that gate on the corner of Admiral Terrace, but never knew it was a film location. Of course the original Boroughmuir building (it was the junior school - s1 & 2 - when I was there) was the location for James Gillespie's Girls School which is thought to be the inspiration behind the school in the book.

What a great idea for a video. Brent and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We were both clueless as to which movie it was until I saw the name Brodie. I remembered watching this movie a few years ago. Brent never saw the movie so he had no idea. Can't wait for the next video! All the best!

I don’t remember, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen it. Did Alicja contribute her footwear for the video? (Such dedication!) Speaking of which, I thought I have the same trainers as you’re wearing for a second there, but it looks like yours are Asics, mine are Saucony. No!!1! It was Sean Connery for his role in The Codfather! Connery played fish trader Hector Brocklebank, owner of H. B. Fish. The rough plot of the film: In a big move to conquer new areas for their shady buisness, Mafia families move to Edinburgh. A short time after their arrival, Hector Brockelbank starts a marketing campaign by having a cousin deliver a free fish to all households in his area. Sadly his cousin is a total glutton, and eats many of the fishes before they are delivered. Many households basically only receive a fish's head in a box. As a severed fish head is an announcement of death in Mafia circles, the mafioso read this as threats from their competitors, and a merciless underworld war ensures until only one family remains. Badly decimated. They finally find out where the fishes came from and come after Hector. In good Scottish tradition, other buisness owners from Edinburgh come to Hector's help and drive the remaining mafioso out off the city by the brutal effect of their malkeys. …you didn't know that one, did you? See? ^^) I'll get me coat then.
