Can you have a good night out in... Castleford?

We head back into Yorkshire and to the small town of Castleford that is within the city of Wakefield District!
We make around 15 of the town's pubs, going from one side of the town to the other!

I work in the lion. I was in the back at the very end. I’m so glad you came in. Hope you got to see the band. We have bands in every Friday and Saturday and sometimes even a Sunday. Every other Thursday we also have a jam night where people can come in and play even if they aren’t in a band

Loved this video. Thank you. Great to see my old town shown in a favourable light for a change. I moved out years ago and enjoyed seeing my old haunt The Lion. This pub has been a great pub for music since I was a lass and I am now retired. My brother Match drank in there and my mate Karen was the barmaid, both now sadly gone from us. RIP to match and Karen. You are missed.

Incredible the number of social clubs really. It just shows how much diversity there is in the drinking cultures between different parts of England, there’s hardly any where I live.

Rugby league is a religion in Castleford (and much of this area of Yorkshire) as you noticed. The local team punches well above its weight and is very well supported locally.

You missed the raison d'etra of the Junction. It is not just a cask ale pub but the cask ales are from the Wood! The Landlord bought what was a shut pub some 10 years plus ago, acquired a number of second hand wooden casks and had them refurbished. He sends them to a range of breweries who fill them with their beer. This probably explains the presence of Sam Smiths products ae their Brewery Bitter is normally from the wood in the North.

Ahhhhh... superb! No one filled us in on that bit sadly... they did say they weren't a Sam Smiths Pub... but no more info on that was offered... what a shame! I would have loved a look at that

The former mining areas of the UK are generally all the same, bereft of real ale, havens for John Smiths and Fosters unfortunately. For that reason IMO you can't really have a really good night out in these places, not enough choice.
