I walk around Dewsbury in West Yorkshire known for it's rapid decline and for being one of West Yorkshire's worst towns. I try and find a decent pub as drinking seems like the only thing to do anymore. I also chat to some locals to see what their thoughts are on the town.
Join me on a search for what Dewsbury has to offer.....and to drink!

"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies," Jefferson wrote. " If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around(these banks) will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered." "The issuing power of currency shall be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs." We should all meditate on that amazing prediction of things to come that are not necessarily beneficial to the 99%-- but only to the 1%.

Yep, my home town, wisbech in Cambridgeshire, started to fall 25 years ago when Blair opened the country to the former eastern bloc citizens, I seldom go back there now and when I do it's a flying visit, the wisbech I knew was a hard town full of hard men but there were no muggings or murders, these days it's full of Albanians and Lithuanians drinking in the streets, dealing, trafficking young girls, attacking locals out with their families, I don't recognise the place and most of the people I grew up with have moved now like I did in 2002 when my car got broken into for the umpteenth time. I still own a house there that i rent to an English couple but I don't think I'll ever live there again.

I spent a few months behind the bar at the Welly back in the late 90's. I came in for the last few hours after the topless barmaid had finished through until the landlord took over at 11:30 to let the coppers in the back door after the late shift finished. 🤣I left Dewsbury in 2010, and it was well on its way down back then. I still go up and see family every few months and it just depressing to go into the town centre nowadays. I think its the only place I know where both McDonalds and Wetherspoons have shut down. Like the guy said, most of the good pubs in Dewsbury are out of the town centre. I went to a wake at the 'Crack' up Crackenedge lane about a mile out of the town a few weeks ago and it was really nice. The staff were really friendly, it was warm and welcoming the prices were good and the spread they put on was really nice. Dewsbury town centre is a lost cause now, unless they can find a way of getting people to go back there, but there is nothing to do anymore, so no reason to go

Back in the 70's I lived three or four miles away, there was a cinema, and my girlfriends posh mum used to shop at Marks and Sparks. There was a pub on the Batley Road which was the only place locally that sold Old Peculiar. In 1982, our kid's stag night started in Batley and crawled it's way towards Dewsbury, whilst the hen night ran the opposite way. When the two met up he and his fiancée buggered off at about 9:00 pm! We skipped a few pubs and spent the rest of the night drinking Old Peculiar. The next time I was there was in 2006, I went there to register Betty's death and it was pretty dire, I didn't go there again until 2015 after dad died to get a copy of his will certified. By then it had really hit rock bottom. Batley and Morley seem to have improved a little since the 70s, and maybe Wakefield too, but Dewsbury is dreadful.

Everyone keeps talking about the pub attached to Dewsbury station. It looks quaint from outside with the Virginia creeper covering the entire pub. Yes, it's got a good reputation for a great range of pints etc. The only thing that bowled me over when I went in there one afternoon was the overwhelming smell of body odour. The bar staff mustn't like opening the windows for fresh air! I've never been in since!

No Guinness but a warm welcome and a cracking cup of tea. 2. Go to the pub at the train station. West Riding. Probably have Guinness, certainly have ales, again, good welcome, nice beers. This is a true picture of Dewsbury. I have lived here for a decade and it has gone to absolute pot in that time. Even though I live 5 minutes walk from the market, I hardly venture into the town centre anymore as THERE ARE NO SHOPS TO SPEAK OF. The well known high street names have all shut up and closed down. Boots are 'hanging on by a thread', I'd say. Greggs is still going strong. We have no Poundland, Savers, or Wilko anymore. (It says a lot when well-known discount stores close down!) There was a notable difference on Wednesday and Saturdays of 'busyness' in the town centre as these were market days. I don't see that buzz of visitors anymore. It has a couple of Victorian arcades with arched entrances that must have been lovely in their day but are now left to rack and ruin. The lack of shops make it disappointing as this makes me buy things online more often as I would need to get a train or bus into Leeds to get the choice of shops. I pay postage costs for my items that are as expensive as train tickets. It becomes a 'swings and roundabouts' situation in how you buy your items. Kirklees Council is to blame for the demise of Dewsbury. The Tories' policies have driven this town into the ground too. Kirklees Council doesn't care about Dewsbury nor does the Central Government. It's a poor, working class town that has been declining for ages, I'm told. Yet you can see it was once a healthy mill town with its grand Victorian architecture when 'cotton was king'. The elected people do not bother to persuade investors to put their money into Dewsbury town centre, so the local people suffer for their careless decisions.
