Can you have a good night out in... Darlington?

Day three of Holly's little Birthday tour took us back into England and to the North East Market Town of Darlington!!
A long night for sure but some great variety here... 18 pubs in total...

Used to be a great night. Darlington tends/tended to get people coming in from nearby towns with a poorer nightlife such as Richmond, Catterick, Newton Aycliffe and even Northallerton, as well as the local Darlingtonians. But nobody seems to go out anymore. Certainly not the young. The pubs in your video such as Avalon and the Gate (late bars) were half empty. They used to be rammed to the rafters with queues down the road with a 1 in, 1 out policy. Fridays and Saturdays are just about bearable nowadays, but midweek is utterly dead. I went out for a pint on Tuesday last week, and half the pubs were closed. The one I finally went into had 2 people in it. There are no nightclubs anymore. They've all shut down because of dwindling numbers. Darlington used to have a banging nightlife. Monday was "gay night" and was always heaving. Thursday used to be "student night" and likewise was always heaving. As for Friday and Saturday, it used to be like a night out in Berlin (ok not quite, but you get my point). There would be the busy bars and late bars, with DJs spinning their tracks until 1am and then everyone piled into either Inside Out or Escapade nightclubs. Not anymore. Friday and Sat nights must have one third of the people out that used to be out only 15 years ago. Nowadays everyone is staying in and drinking cheap supermarket drinks while sitting on the sofa scrolling through Instagram. As for Avalon, that used to be a big haunch of mine back in my early 20s about 14 years ago or so. But in recent years I've literally witnessed people doing powder in there in full view of door staff. It might not be like that now, but just saying what I've seen, which did make me feel uneasy, as it usually leads to aggressive thugs becoming even more aggressive and thuggish. There is (or certainly it was) a decent outside area too where they have more clubland music on with DJs etc. It's decent out there, or certainly was. The Gate is a funny place. I have never had any problems in there, but then again, at 2:30 in the morning, coked-up drunks are going to cause problems. Maybe Harvey's have upped their game recently in terms of more on-the-ball door staff. They just need to stop with their sweeping generalising of whole groups of people. Grange bar, Hash, Number 22s and a little micro pub called ORB are all worth visiting (they're in the "posh" part of Darlington with higher prices, albeit with lower tendencies to attract "bellends". That area is only about 300 yards from the Gate).

Darlington is great for a drink there are about 25 pubs within a 5 minute walk of each other and there were quite a few you missed out as well. Glad you enjoyed it.

The Green Dragon in the early 70's was the place to be! Many a wasted Saturday afternoon and some good evenings there!

Darlington according to my favourite Ratebeer method is amazing. Up there with Halifax

Good video. Im from there and avoid alot of these places when visiting. Boot and shoe gets some strange folk in and the likes of the quays have seen better days. The gate and harveys are trouble hot spots and even locals avoid them. If you ever return go to ignite, only real nightclub in town and also number 22, proper ale and continental lager bar

I remember Harvey's turning away my friend once for being in the army. He was an officer. A captain at that. He was ID'd (at the ripe age of about 27) and they saw his army ID in his wallet, and said "squaddies" aren't allowed in. Squaddies are 18 year old new recruits who get shipped up from the south of England and Scotland to undergo infantry training at nearby Catterick Garrison. Squaddies aren't university educated army officers. Is it even legal to bar someone simply because of their job? Anyway, it's a strange place and haven't been there for years. Always felt like I was about to get my head kicked in just for looking at someone the wrong way. Very tense atmosphere.

Avalon is now shut permanently. Always felt like if there was a fire in there you'd be buggered. Won't be missed.

Been loads of trouble in there, assaults, drug dealing the lot. Ignites the only nightclub now

@@PeaveyPV20 Does Ignite actually get any punters? I haven't been on a night out in Darlo for years now. Used to be a banging night. But then all the nightclubs closed down. I ended up going to the Grange late bar. I once went into Institute about 5 years ago but there were like 12 people in there.

+1 My wife and I were born and grew up in Darlington. The nightlife was violent in the 1980s. We left the country in 1986. 😂🎉🇨🇵 Thanks for reminding us how shite the place is. We're on holiday in Spain 🇪🇦 at the moment watching you. 🇪🇺
