It is possible, but it's easier as a diesel or heavy equipment mechanic. I've been with the largest peterbilt dealer in America for 5 years and made almost or over 100k for 3 of them. I have had 2 bad years with this company, but that had more to do with the oil field collapse of 2016. Now that the oil field is back, alot more money is flowing. I personally have gotten to a point where I can make 100k a year, but it means no time with family, long hours, no sleep, and investing in tools. I have more equipment than alot of shops. It's been a long hard road, and has taken alot of sacrifice. In the end, sometimes we need to stop and realize that it's not all about money. Family time is important too. And remember, your children are only small once. What's more important, giving them all this world has to offer, or giving them what they want, your time and love?

Sam, very well said. What kids want more than anything in the world is to spend time with their parents. Having the latest and greatest "stuff" doesn't teach them anything or help them grow up to be good people.

Be an independent equipment tech. Once you get a service truck put together and have an established reputation you’ll have no problem exceeding $100k per year net income. The problem with the automotive industry is that when something breaks people aren’t losing huge money. When a piece of equipment goes down guys are standing around. Operations come to halt. Money is flying out the window. You can show up in a service truck and be the hero. Sometimes it’s just a blown line or something. But if you can make lines on your truck it pays hugely. No one complains about the price when you get their operation back up quickly. The down side is that it’s hard, dirty work with a ton of stress. You better believe you’ll have the site management breathing down your neck the entire time your working.

Are you working at a dealer? Isn't a good portion of your work recalls and warranty?
@thatmechanicguy87736 жыл бұрын
Toyota Ron, yeah about 50% of my work is recalls and warranty. When you see the same thing all the time (i.e. pattern failures, and recalls) you learn what works and what doesn’t. You know how to diagnose it quickly and efficiently, you know what tools you need and what components need to be removed (and more importantly, what doesn’t need to be removed). I regularly flag between 55-70 hours a week, and make a pay rate that’s above the majority because I’m good at my job. I have to help others that don’t know as much, and I’ll have to take care of my work. Management sees that, and management respects me and takes care of me. I made almost 90k last year.
@thatmechanicguy87736 жыл бұрын
Toyota Ron, I’m also in a position, due to certification, where only one other technician can do the warranty and recalls that I can do.
@toyotaron78306 жыл бұрын
Impressive money, good for you. Are you in the Northeast? I am Toyota certified as well as L1 ASE so I tend to get the more difficult repairs (like BSM, LDA issues) but the times we get are ridiculous. We probably have a backlog of 100 Sienna door recalls, which pay 2.2 hours. If you follow Toyota's requirements for this, and I don't remove the center console or the rear seats I'm at 3.2 or so hours including the required health check and RO documentation. Another example, I got a Prius tow in that had been to 2 private shops and you know this is one vehicle that should not be at a private shop for anything other than maintenance. It has a transmission shift issue, long story short I had about 4 hours in this thing due to 2 separate issues (one induced by the other shop) and they did not bill the customer for the 4 hours, or $400 dollars.
@thatmechanicguy87736 жыл бұрын
Toyota Ron, we get 2.5 for the G04 sliding door recall, I usually make an hour on them consistently. I still need to pursue my L1 this year. Yes, I’m in the northeast. It sounds to me like your management sucks, they don’t respect or take care of you. At least management here sees the benefits to having people who WANT their certifications. That’s what keeps me alive. It’s literally me, and one other master who’s been with Toyota for 30 years. The other guys have gone to classes, and gotten the basic factory certs, but nobody pursues ASE’s. They do not care. So they lose out. I know shop induced issues all too well. I’m doing a clutch on a Taco as we speak because another Toyota dealer put one in a year ago and royally hackified the job. We need less hacks and more people who study and learn how to properly fix the automobile.

We are a very busy shop and have so many cars to work on we cant get to all of them, making all the hours you want is easy if you are focused on quality and working on the customers car until its tested and checked out fixed perfectly. If you check your work before you allow it to go you will not have CB's. Plus we get an OT incentive here on top of flat rate for working extra hours, so they let us take as many cars as we want, and work, or be lazy and go home after 40 - its up to you.

And if you're not making a ton of money or you lack in a certain area, don't look at it like you're a bad technician. Do the best that you can and never stop trying. There's a huge difference between lacking in a area and trying, then lacking and knowing it, but not trying to get better. This is a business where you have to keep up with the technology and always be willing to learn something. There will always be someone who knows more than you. Any knowledge you can learn, take it.

I agree this can be done but at some point you realize that the money is not worth the time and effort that you put into it because you've lost all your time at work you'll start to realize that you need to draw the line somewhere you need to be honest with yourself and be a Step Above the Rest but keep yourself happy

my man! i graduate tech school may 28th and i have a job lined up at a dealership where i’ll be making 18hr for a year hourly learning beneath a master tech and get all my certs to be a master tech myself within a year and then i will get paid $30 an hour flat rate. i’m excited to get into the shop and learn. don’t know why i’m telling you lol but yea lol also i’m in a major city and they are having a difficult time finding techs!

My boss brags about 1 (of 2) flat rate techs making over $100,000 a year. I finished tech school last semester and have been at this shop for about 6 months now. One of the selling points for taking this job, that one of my teachers recommended, was to find out how much the flat rate techs make an hour. They're both making more than $30/hour and have about 10 years of experience, so I know there is room to grow.

I just know I'd rather work in an environment where the harder and better I work the more money I take home. Right now I have a cushy job using my click finger, where as long as I do my planned maintenance on time and keep my systems up to date and running, all I need to do is be PRESENT during business hours in case something happens, so that leads to a LOT of slack time on the clock. And even though we fill that time with a lot of productivity and schedule continuing education and disaster recovery testing to fill the week, no matter how hard we work or how much output we produce we'll still take home the same pay as if we putt for par.

you can make that money easy as a diesel tech, the local municipality here pays $52/hr doing fleet work, you wouldn't even need OT to hit 6 figures with paid medical and retirement

Working at the dealership (Jeep Chrysler dodge) making between 80 to 120 hours per week (not working 120 hours per week) doing tranys diffs t-case overhauling and selling services made about $75-80 a year. As an A tech making $36 an hour. Yes it’s true you have to work and hustle . Now making 100,000 plus every year for the past 10 years working on government equipment heavy duty, tractor trailers milling machines light towers what every they give me. With a class a license and towing endorsement. Yes it is very possible to make $100,000 plus a year

Don Quixote all these guys in the comments talking about 28 and 35 dollars an hour. Where are they handing out wages like that? I realize it probably took them a while to get there. But usually when I get a raise it’s a dollar per hour every few years. Not sure if I’m getting screwed but it would take me 20 or 30 years worth of raises to even get me close to that.

Everything said here is true. I made 105k last year averaging 58 hours a week for the year with a highest week of 78 hours. You have to have the skills to demand a high hourly rate and you have to work at a busy shop. No dishonesty required. There’s more than enough honest work that needs to be done. I showed up early and stayed late as often as possible.

Not anymore not for the flat rate but maybe fleet mechanics that have an operation still pushin hard then yeah I can see it. Kill it on Overtime and stay healthy. Advise for the auto techs is to get into a fleet or transit

The best way to a 100k year is with technician teams; if you're in a group of quality techs and you all split the collective flag hours, you'd have to be the top dog: highest pay rate and highest percentage of hours. You'd be pretty hard pressed to make 100k in my city without cheating or being on a team.

I'm not an automotive tech, I work in the marine industry, so its comparable. Last year I made over $80k between my full time job and side work. I could make more if I spent more time on the clock, but I make a point to spend time with family and to separate myself from work.

I work in a machinery shop. Small engines, golf carts, ATVs, utvs, bobcat skid steers and track loaders, excavators, 4x4 electric vehicles, hell you may find a boat or go cart in there too. Being able to make that 100k isn’t impossible for me. The company I work for honors time with the company handsomely. And one would definitely have to produce quantity quality and be in a lead position. Calling shots. Good at diagnostic. Everything is controlled by computers now so if you can’t diagnose forget about it.

I'm a JLR tech with 1 year experience in the brand (6 years in aftermarket) 25 years old. I made 70k this year in Atlanta. But that's working 6 days a week, 10 to 12 hour days, no lunch breaks... (I pack lunch and eat as I work). Take in all the waiters you can. Dont draw tickets from the open board. Do every PDI you can. I turn 120 to 150 hours a two week period. Though had one pay period where I hit 212. That was busting ass from 6 AM to 7PM, monday to Saturday, only stopping to go to the restroom or refill my water bottle

Hi FRM Do you diagnosis only as a tech or do you do both diagnosis and the repair? I worked at a shop where the top tech diagnosed at a hourly rate and the rest of the techs did the repairs at flat rate. It didn’t work well and didn’t last long? Thank you Ex 12 year honda tech Tony

This is very true. It’s a lot more doable than you think. 90% of techs fail to learn enough to get themselves into this position. It’s going to take a good 10 years to do it. I’ve seen guys regularly do 90 hours per week without ripping anyone off at the dealer. When I was flat rate The dealer if we weren’t busy I would find work, I’d do oil changes. You can’t get into the cry baby mindset that everyone gets fed work you need to find the work and eventually your writers and service manager will see how motivated you are and give you jobs you can make money on. Some times you need to quit your job to find a better place.

Its kind of fun to hear techs say they can't make 100k it's not bad when you do the numbers a intermediate tech who makes 25hr just has to do 16.7 hrs a day to gross 100k masters at 35 hr is even easier at 12 hrs. As a dealer guy I just make up(or try to in need 14.4 hrs a day) in pre-deliverys about 1hr a pop and takes 15 mins or so/ or grab a used car
