This hit home for me on many levels. I loved this business when I got into it years ago, but for a long time I saw only the ugly side of it. I tried to stay positive and stuck with it because I loved the challenge and the fact that no two days were ever the same. But over the years, at least in my area, I saw and continue to see a terrible number of hack jobs. I have worked along side guys who robbed from customers and made a great living doing it, while I made garbage as a reward for doing the right thing. That did not change how I work, however. I will never sink to that level to make money. My pride and my name is more important than that. But I have seen it more times than I want to say. Honesty and pride have their own rewards. Something has changed for me recently. I have begun to make some great friends with like minded guys, such as yourself. This network of real technicians has opened a new world for me. I now see that there are many good people in this industry and it has renewed my hope for all of us. As cut throat as this business can be, you are an example of the other side of it. Together we can share our knowledge through youtube, and other forms of social media. We can help each other and customers to become informed. For those who truly love this industry, the internet has given us the ability to all come together. Thank you, Mike for being one of the good guys.

I've seen the other side of it, guys who are happy to make everyone else miserable. Usually the young ones who don't take it seriously enough. "Oh it doesn't matter if the alignment is in the red, it's only out a little." Yeah, I got made fun of for a good three months for voicing dissent on that one, and it still gets brought up. Sorry, for my $80 of hard earned money, I expect the best, not "Oh that's good enough." Immaturity, jackass behavior, you name it I've seen it. Anything they can do to poke under your skin, backtalk, gossip, throwing you under the bus for a comeback even if it's not anything that you touched or remotely your fault, middle school level drama. I'm about 21 years too old for acting like a kid, and being stuck there as a newer tech has had me considering leaving the industry multiple times. I'm here to have fun doing something I enjoy, helping the public, making a paycheck, and then go home happy. I didn't sign on to deal with that crap, nor did I sign on to be held back constantly while hack work goes out from "senior" techs because they make the shop money...for now.

Yeah I'm in that position right now. I work next to a guy who I've been friends with for years but he's miserable, looking for a new job, and complains constantly. Knowing he's going to leave soon has made him really not give a damn. He's late every single day, doesn't get much done, and has no problem saying he's shocked they havent fired him yet. I've gotten to the point where I can't stand the guy anymore which is sad

Well said ! I’ve experienced all those situations especially the ugly . Unfortunately there are way to many mechanics that are hacks and rip customers off . Early in my career at the very first shop I worked at that was a big problem. Management knew and didn’t do a damn thing . To all the honest techs out there that want to own their own shop one day , it can happen. Keep working towards your goal . I’m 38 and my wife and I own our own shop . We have for years now . Stay honest and do quality work it will pay off! Treat your customers as you want to be treated and you will have a extremely successful shop ! Keep up the great videos!

The thing is, you say the best mechanics can make 100 grand. For people watching this, they most likely can assume to be average workers in their field. So why not just go into a trade where the AVERAGE pay is high? Such as plumbing and HVAC installation? Not to mention those 2 trades require only a grand worth of hand tools.

The worst things about this business are 1) it’s horrible for your knees 2) it sucks being around the chemicals 3) it sucks being around constant negativity from other people in the shop. On the positive side of things I enjoy the challenge of figuring out a problem and every day I learn something. All that being said, I’m still looking at other fields of work because I already have an issue going on with one of my knees, I just don’t want to be physically messed up later on in life.

I never had more job satisfaction than when I was a tech. Like you I enjoy working on vehicles. I made a career change at the advice of the veteran techs. They actually touched on the health issues they had and lack of a good retirement. I changed careers and am making a very good living now, but I find myself missing that satisfaction. Great video!

Just took a job as a foreman mechanic, on wages, 79k per year plus superannuation and monthly bonus, holiday and sick leave, penalty rates/overtime etc. The crew is pretty laid back but get in and get it done when needed, the workshop is small and cramped and dirty and processes aren't that great right now but that will change with some smart work. The boss and the 2 guys and one girl I work with are great and we back each other up when things get hectic and help each other out and share our knowledge. It is what you make of it.

I work in an hourly shop, and everyone's always willing to help each other and we have plenty of good times standing around doing nothing. Not having to worry about how much you make all the time can really improve a shop environment, even if you could make more money on flat rate. This is definitely something people should consider when finding a job, because it can really make a difference.

What you said really hit the nail on the head. In my situation I went from working on semi truck in which i have a degree in to automotive in which a ford dealer gave me an opportunity to work as a regular tech. I've work there for little over two months but i still get nervous every time i work there because i am so new to the field and trying to do what a season tech would do. It's very nerve wracking and the amount of learning and doing the job at the same time is enormous. I really appreciate you doing this video. It helps me understand that I am not the only person that has a hard time with these situations

I like the fact that having been a technician, I am more self reliant when it comes to my own repairs. I used to work as a Harley mechanic and we had two guys in the shop who wrecked almost everything they did. Both eventually got fired, but BOTH eventually got re-hired as the shop had a hard time finding mechanics. Why do I have to get dumb nuts come back?

Just found your videos. I was an auto mechanic when I was young because my dad owned service stations and he taught me how to work on cars the right way and to be an honest mechanic to the customer. The part of how everything will hurt as you age is so true. Now in my old age I have so many problems with my knees, hands because of having to put my hands in places that they were not designed to be put. I have little metal shards under my skin in my hands and arms from where i got stuck with metal hanging off some parts. Still I loved being a mechanic and trouble shooting problems and getting to what the problem is and getting it fixed. I changed careers as I got older and moved to where I can you my brains and not my brawn as I realized along the way that I would not be able to do this for the rest of my life. I'm sure this is for most jobs that take brawn and working on your knees all the time. I really do respect mechanics, plumbers and electricians. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

Its so refreshing to hear a fellow tech with the same mindset. Ive worked at dealerships and independent shops. Currently I work at a dealership. Coming from a salary job back to commission its been quite an adjustment. I've put in overtime to make sure that I meet my goal. There is a tech at the shop who works on diesels that I see sitting around 90% of the time and make more hours than me. He's charging insane hours basically. 6.5 hours for an EGR service etc...I work diligently in the shop and try to fix it right the first visit. My question is how do you know when to put your foot down and charge rightful diagnostic time for electrical, nvh etc..

What kills me is tech school telling the young people in it that they can or will make 100k a year or more. Had to tell one young person you make make 28-35k or around 50k in a shop that is busy. Even had to let him know you will change tires and oil said young person I'm going for tech school automotive, had to let him know about two of my friends some tech and lube oil for four years with a big name suba.. why needed more work and experience and help till his bay had enough work. I honestly think this is one of the best videos you've done! Don't get me wrong, we all LOVE new shiny tools 😊, but this video is the real, whole, and nothing but the truth! I'm working for the best company I've ever worked for in my 27 years of being in shops. Purposely accidentally on purpose got myself thrown out of my last employer because they were so underlying and shady. Would sell the cheapest part they could get for the most premium price and ALWAYS wiggled out of taking care of any warranty. But, to quote you, "if you enjoy what you do, you won't work a day in your life". That's where I'm at now. No, I'll never make millions, but it's all good!

The good for me, I love cars and trucks. Different jobs everyday. Kinda feel like a car doctor sometimes surgeon..lol Helping people. The bad for me, weather...cold, wet, dripping salt, yes some outside jobs. Bad customers, greedy techs, bad bosses and shops pushing quotas so hard some tech make up repairs. The ugly,.. burns, cuts, pulled muscles, chemical exposure and noise. Flat rate on slow downs turning 25 hours a week. All in all I Like helping people, like cars, like going fast, problem solving, learning, rewarding work...not work to me. Sometimes I cant believe 5 o'clock came so quick.

The big problem I had at Nissan was we had 6 technicians. The problem is, not many of our customers were "buyers". Whatever ticket you pick up, was yours. Wasn't distributed to individuals. I wasn't the fastest, but I also wasn't incredibly slow either. I struggled making a decent amount of hours because all I'd get was oil changes, rotates, warranty and recalls. The service manager would always say I'm the lowest on the totem pole. He had never been a tech before, so I didn't hold it against him. When it was real slow, I mean maybe 1 car an hour on the tech side.....we would take turns. I got out of the business due to mental illness, which is another topic. But as much as I loved working for that family, the service manager shouldn't have been working there. He'd throw you under the bus in a heartbeat, and did many times.

The bad: Being lied to and fake promises of training and learning on the job. Then slowly removing you from big tickets to only oil changes and tires since the shop become understaffed and slamming you with non stop express tickets The ugly: You honestly try to stay but it’s not a good place for improvement so you go quit and the shop service managers says “Get your shit out of here” even tho you were polite and finished your last day and cleaned

I worked in printing factory making business forms, I hated going to work!! Found a light duty technician job and loved it! (most of the time) there are days that working on some stuff is like "why am I doing this" then I remember how much I didn't like factory life!! Will I make $100K probably not, but I like where I work and the customers we have, FYI if you know of an employee stealing from customers and your boss won't do anything about it, find another place to work!

One of the main problems imo is in line with Sam from ToolHut if you watched his bio video, is the low starting wages and having to buy all you’re own tools. Take a building trade and some start out at more and you need basic hand tools. So with that bein said I also agree we are not far from “good technicians” calling there own paycheck. Great video!

I know I’m a Rookie I’ve only worked on a shop for 1 year and some months and pass true all the Honda in tech training vid, and had scooped on all the techs boxes for a discussion of tools needed to get the job Done cause I my self had want to integrate to fix my own car and have the ability to freelance to work on other cars with the investment on my set. I've been in shop were the atmosphere was so bad guys didn't speak to each other. It was literally every man for themselves the two shop Foremans didnt even like each other or wanted to help the younger techs. I wasnt there long after about two months I couldn't take anymore.

Favorite noise complaint from 10-11 years ago when I was a dealer tech. Brand new Chevy traverse, owners wife, between 70 and 80 years, Complaining of a noise on the passenger side rear. I drive it in here nothing, service writer gets the customer and his wife, they tell me it’s a faint heartbeat sound when sitting in the car for about five minutes with the AC off, and the radio off. She was hearing her own heart 🤣

One of the ugly stuff that has just happened an hour ago - I removed the under engine cover of a BMW E90 and what did I find? Half of a dead dogs jaw fell and then I started to think about a dead rat - and that is what it also was on the plastic cover. Another ugly stuff - I had to replace a low pressure fuel pump of a BMW E46 320d and I found a long dead, small rat or mouse that found its way on the fuel pump cap by climbing the fuel tank. I had to remove it with a medical forceps piece by piece. So this job also has ugly parts, but for the majority of time I love it. Great video!

In my shop, I am an apprentice but my boss treats me like his son, however my co worker who has been there for a very long time treats me un fairly and brakes my tools and tries to hide it. However I have been told he's always been like that and he is afraid of someone being better than him however all I want to do is work on cars I don't care who is the best all I want is to be happy and learn.

I enjoyed this video and Im lucky to work at a good shop but to be honest I'm using it as a stepping stone to bigger things. I like the work but I don't think the pay is there for the amount of labor and knowledge required and I knew that going in. I recently got master certified and I had to give them my word that I'd work for at least 2 more years and I'm going to do that. But my long term goal was to learn as much as I could, build up a good tool collection, and get that certification to add to my resume. It's a shame that the dependable guys who actually enjoy doing this and give 110% are often forced to look elsewhere due to the pay in my area.

I completely agree with everything you've said. I recently went from being hourly back to flat rate. Going from a gse mechanic at an airport back to a dealership.. belive it or not working hourly at an airport working on multimillion dollar electrical hydraulical can bus nightmares I've made the least ammount of money I've ever made and I'm a level 1 witch is the highest you can go horrible company we had no ac machines no information on the machines. There are good shops to work at and bad shops to work at flat rate vs hourly also good and bad just depends on your skill level and what YOU accept don't let em feed you a pipe dream and look at it for what it actually is. Like he has said before if you allready work at a bad shop and are looking for somewhere else to work be picky i looked for 6 months before I found the shop I'm at now and couldn't be happier they paid for my ase certs and I've gotten more training than I've ever had before I've gotten pushed mechanically wit h is how I accel.. its not impossible to make 100k a year but it's hard and you gotta three steps ahead and be at a shop where you have the work to make it.. I wish I had this guy as senior master when I was an apprentice this is the kind of guy to learn from.

I like the Auto Industry, but don’t like the flat rate system. Learned alot from working at the Dealership but didn’t like the drama attached to it (Service Writers, etc). With that being said, I left the industry to work in IT. Even though I’m no longer working on cars for a living I like watching your videos because it seems like you’re working a good shop. And I.T. When I worked at a GM dealership, they were having the problem with cavalier and s10 head gaskets. Two guys in the shop would do what was called " the tip and slip". Pry head up still attached to motor mount high enough could slip old head gasket out and put new in. No cleaning machiniu any. Just hope gm coolant tablets worked.

I worked for a foreman that wanted the repair done and out as fast as possible he didn't want to clean the calipers or grease slide pins or even change hardware he said wait. And if they bring the car back do it then I told him I wouldn't do it that way I'll take 5 minutes to do it right the first time and he didn't want to give me alot of the repairs I just don't do things that way

The shop I started at 6 months ago is better than the one I left but everything they have is half broke you got to use a tie strap to hold the switch on for the brake lathe got to mess with the oil pump for 10 minutes to get it primed takes two people and 3 prybars to remove tires may have to roll the car back and forth 4 times to get the sensors to register one of my lifts will just start lifting by itself have to keep the power off it's a shame cause the shop makes money every day but they won't spend any on the shop that's why I own my own shop tools the young guy won't even buy his nessasary tools so I don't know how long I'll stay here

Well one can also specialize in an area of Automotive. For example when I am doing Diagnostics on vehicles during my side work, I charge $50, multiply by 10/20 per week it's a nice chump change. Mike, you handled that like a true gentleman who maybe has dealt with some rhetorical personalities a time or two? Attitude is a big problem with the one's who constantly take up arms in this industry. If you want to make more money, stop complaining, pay attention to others who have been successful, put down your ego, and take some notes on what you need to do differently! Usually it's your attitude and work ethics to blame 9 out of 10. You can't expect to see higher pay if you are unwilling to go beyond C tech work, sorry guys it just doesn't work that way. You can have every credential and degree under the sun, but at the end of the day you have to be able to apply it and have an attitude that coincides with the proper work ethics to do so. You get paid what you are willing to put into yourself, peers, subordinates, and the organization as a whole! If you look at anyone who is successful financially speaking, they all have this mentality and that's why they're compensation is higher-they are winners, not losers, winners! If you want to be successful, change the way in which you look at it! Overall, there is only one person to blame for your wage and you see him everyday in the mirror. The good, the bad and the ugly, appears to be a huge issue that is completely undermining the mechanical workshops in the USA. In Australia, being a 'tradie' is highly regarded and held with great respect.We have a excellent apprenticeship system that produces highly skilled and knowledgeable tradespersons. Base wages, plus penalties for overtime, acquired tickets, are set in stone by our federal goverment, for every employment category, enduring everyone has a minimum hourly wage, which currently is set at $ 27.50 hr. Your employer can increase this rate. Every employer must pay superannuation. Again, set in stone. Each state has a govermental 'Safework' division, that oversees all business safety compliance and certification, and will not hesitate to instill heavy penalties for non compliance, and finally, several federal government departments oversee all Australian businesses for continual compliance with training, tax, employee relations, etc. Myself, I control a mining mechanical engineering workshop in remote Western Australia and have for 30 years. Every employee is multiskilled, holding at least 2 trades, and most, at least one engineering degree from a state university. Constant training and upskilling ensures constant production improvements. Just a different insight, abeit very quickly and lacking indepth detail, of Australia's employment laws. 👍👍 Greeting from Woomera, South Australia.

Sounds like a great place to work, unfortunately corporate greed has really tainted the workforce in the USA. In a lot of instances it really is easier to sit back and collect welfare from the government. If you look at the net income from it it really is equal to someone working making 25k to 35k.

I have seen dealerships out here in Arizona full of mechanics that shouldn't even be sitting in a car let alone working on it endure there year after year with their job not even trying could you imagine if police and firemen and people in emergency rooms didn't know how to do their job how bad things would be!and still a continues in the automotive industry will just keep spiraling down and down and never be professional!!

Learn the trade. Do the best you can and try not to break anything along the way. Get ASE certified, not just for bragging rights but to give you added confidence when you go out on your own. Plenty of money to be made doing good work that you enjoy in this industry. Oh, and if your a guy, start getting your PSA checked in your 40’s. 👍

It depends on many different factors, labor rate etc, there are many gurus that state a number but real world and what i guy says are very different

There is a lot of truth in your video. After 49 years in the trade i can think of many good things but bad and ugly things outweigh the good. If i had to do it over again i wouldn't do it any differently for the first 10 or 15 years but after that i would find another career.

Agree. 43 years in this game. Glad i am gone. Money never was there. Other things that pay better. Best to those who think this is their career. You will need all the help you can get.
