The MS-20 sounds so raw, almost at the point of being barely tamed. Like a lion on a housecats leash. Wonderful synth.

Sorry for the late reply. A lion on house cat leash is a good description for the MS-20. There is so much raw energy in that synth. I would love to know what it is that gives it that bite. And why other mono synths don't have it. Do you have any idea?

@@electronictiger I suspect the ms20, like the 303, is just a one off product of its time and as time has shown, is unlikely to be repeated. It has got to be the filters, hasn’t it?

@@Pro-gressive I would assume so, yes. I should teach myself to read schematics. I bet there are plenty of filter designs out there on the interwebs. I'd love to have a deeper understanding what makes them so different sounding from one and other. As for things not repeating. It's kind of sad really. Roland used to be at the forefront. Truly designing the future, as their motto says. But these recent year they're chasing their own tail with their digital emulations of their old catalogue.

I was interested in the MS-20, but the mini keys put me off :)

Indeed, the minikeys aren't great. Comfortably reaching from a C to a G an octave higher is nice. But the travel of the keys is so shallow. I find it disconcerting. When I got my Mini, many years ago, there was no Full Size version. Other than the expensive vintage ones. If you've got the money for it, a full size version is the way to go. Cause the sound of the MS-20 still holds up. Or I think so, at least. Or maybe the newly released K-2 MKII by Behringer with a midi keyboard of your choice.

@@electronictiger I did consider the Behringer, I do have Behringer synth's, I think the next synth i will get is their MS-5

@@DisciplinedCommotion That MS-5 has been tempting me as well. Full size keys is a major plus. And the sounds I've been hearing from it are very tasty as well. The main reason I haven't gotten one (yet) is that I don't have the space for it. But it looks to be a very playable instrument, indeed.
