no, no vpn is going to "protect your data". That's a MASSIVE scam that all of them pull, and would never be allowed under advertising standards for actual countries (which is why their TV and newspaper ads don't make these claims).

These overexplained videos are truly a Godsend. They're so beginner friendly but are still so jam-packed with knowledge that even an experienced sewist could learn knew things from them. Plus the graphics are really the cherry on top they're so well made. Do you think maybe a quick five minute video with common sewing and garment definitions would ever be something you would make? I've tried a few times to find a sort of "sewing dictionary" before but I must really suck at Googling stuff because I can't find anything and not being able to use the words I need to describe a problem or look up tutorials really sucks :(

@@SarahSpaceman If you ever have time and motivation for something like that, I'm sure many people would appreciate it! I've been interested in learning to sew for a long time and recently I've been enjoying your videos a lot. Seeing your amazing cosplay projects has given me some more directed motivation to learn to sew. I think I'd like to learn to make costumes like you do! They're so complex and fun and artistic so they interest me more than regular clothes, haha. (I'll try starting simple, of course! Gotta get a solid foundation in the basics, or something, right?) But I hope I'll eventually learn to make really cool stuff like you and so many other cosplayers do. Your videos are already very helpful because you explain things very well and in an engaging, exciting way, so if you ever want to make a video like what Masked Foxx suggested, I can assure you it'll be my go-to guide XD I hope you continue having fun with your projects! Fun fact. Most sewing machines have a number on them. If you put the brand name and the number (for instance Singer 501a is my sewing machine) in YT or the search bar, you can find tutorials on how to thread it (because every machine is slightly different), how to put in the bobbin, ect. Thank you! ❤ One of the little things that really helped me in the beginning was downloading my sewing machine manual. It sounds like a lame tip, but it really helped me so much! Having the instructions immediately available to pull up on my phone made things like winding a bobbin and threading the needle less of an overwhelming obstacle, because i didn't have to fumble around for instructions and I knew they were correct for my specific machine.

I randomly found this channel like.... A week ago? And it's awesome. I'm so happy to have another youtube channel about sewing/ fashion that I can binge. The enlarged example of how a sewing machine works I bet helps a LOT of people have a better understanding, especially when the sewing machine eventually messes up tension and the bottom is a mess while the top is fine. One quick tip, audio is extremely important. Yes, it's an absolute pain in the butt to get right but it's worth it. I like to watch videos in the background while doing stuff so I rely heavily on audio, I'd imagine a lot of others do as well. I'd imagine there's a lot of tips also on youtube for that specific mic.

I loved watching this--it's like everything I wish I had access to when I started sewing lo these many years ago. Before youtube! ha! Here's a few tips! Sarah, you might want to check your serger blades for sharpness. That "scallop" look on the raw edge (time 2:40) might mean the fabric is getting a little chewed instead of sliced neatly (I know this from painful experience). I like to replace my blades at least yearly, more often if I'm doing a lot with really thick wovens, sweatshirting, fleece, or thick nylon-content fabric. Alternately, it could be a tension issue on the upper or lower looper, making the looper thread fold the fabric over. 1) Knits can be 4-way or 2-way stretch. 2-way, despite the naming convention, means it stretches either widthwise or lengthwise, not both. What this means is that--if you check the direction of greatest stretch and then cut the pattern right--the fabric stretches horizontally. 4-way stretches horizontally and vertically, which means it goes over curves nicely, and you won't need to do the Picard Maneuver to tug your shirt down. (PS: never use 2-way on form-fitting pants--that's a great way to blow out a crotch seam) 2) Interlock is generally 2-way stretch. If the vendor doesn't say, one good "first check" is to look at the fiber content. Is it 100% polyester? It's probably 2-way, with a low stretch percentage. Is it 100% cotton? It's probably "minimal mechanical stretch" 2-way, which is kind of like a thick t-shirt material, and not a form-fitting t-shirt either! Does it have lycra, spandex, or elastane? Could be 4-way! "Jersey" fabric is also likely to be 4-way. (It's really a guessing game if you buy online, if the vendor doesn't give those specs and/or a stretch percentage.) 3) Recovery! Interlock isn't great with "bouncing back" after being stretched. This means your garment will get baggy as you wear it. The higher the percentage of lycra, spandex, or elastane, the greater the chance it has good recovery. I highly recommend Double Brushed Poly to start a knit fabric journey--it's on the less expensive side (especially with sales), it's very forgiving, it's thicker than jersey (which means easier to sew), and has 4-way stretch. 4) If you want a similar finish to a coverlock hem, you can use a twin needle. Twin needle stitches also stretch a bit, e.g, forgiving of pulling a tight-fitting shirt on over the head. Twin needle finish is also very nice for simple fold-over sleeve hems. You don't necessarily have to serge first, as the back side of a twin needle looks like a messy coverstitch underside. 5) You might be interested in "fold over elastic" (FOE), which is like bias tape for knits: it stretches with the garment. You do have to apply FOE with a two-step process, using a zig-zag, but since you're not turning material UNDER, you don't need a seam allowance where you apply FOE. I think the Shein tops used FOE on the straps and cup edging. You can get it at pretty much any big-name craft store, or you can go Etsy-way! They have every color of the rainbow, and prints too, plus supporting small business. Thanks Sarah! Big hugs!

This is the best explanation of fabric bias that I have seen so far. They all feel like they try to explain some hyper specific thing about the warp vs the weft before actually telling you what the bias is. But yeah, just take a 45 degree angle out of it and it works either way assuming you didn't start with some weirdly cut piece of fabric.

I know this is old and someone has probably said this somewhere BUT you can mimic a cover stitch machine on a conventional sewing machine with a twin needle. They only require a straight stitch but can give you the benefits of a stretch stitch. (aka no zigzag) They look complicated but are super easy to load, especially if your machine has two thread holders already. Highly recommend!

I love I watched this after watching the Sakizo video. Honestly, the dramatic teaser was totally necessary. It was a great, beautiful, and informative watch. It's got me looking back at a lot of my favorite artists that I forgot I was inspired by.

I’ve been sewing for over 15 years. Recently I got burnt out on sewing. I had several projects over winter break and I wasn’t happy with how any of them came out. Even so, I kept watching your videos (especially your Strawberry Miku ones even though I’m not a cosplayer or a vocaloid fan at all lol) because they inspired me to do better, regardless of how my work came out. Plus you always give me tips that I somehow never heard of before and it always blow my mind. I had no idea how to make my own bias tape. I’ve been buying that shit for years. Anyways, thanks Sarah, and congrats. I’m really proud of you. ❤️

I loved the explanation of how a sewing machine works with the moving graphic beside you as you were explaining it. It really helped.

I'm not a complete novice at sewing but your explanations are so next level that I learned a lot even though this beginner project. I've been watching your costume videos too, not necessarily because I could dream of making anything as complicated in the foreseeable future, but because I admire the your art and it inspires me to try and learn more ❤❤❤

When I hand sew patches or holes on (patches) or in (holes) I typically opt to use one length of thread and a (hand) sewing needle for each end of the thread (so two needles) and I put one end through what I am sewing and then with tiny and equal distances for stitch length and pass the needles from top (inside) to bottom (outside) with the top needle and then the reverse with the bottom needle through the fabric being sewn. While typing this process out it does sound/seem quite complicated but when actually sewing with the method, it is almost stupidly easy. I find that it is stronger than using just one line of stitching.

I actually use a coverstitch at work! They are a definitely expensive and domestic ones are super finicky. I use an industrial and she's temperamental... if you use the one spool she doesn't like she skips stitches. But when it works MMMMMM SO SATISFYING. also I am SO excited to see you tackle another Sakizou especially THAT one! Looking forward to the deep dive too, I adore everything Sakizou

Alright, so I've been watching the backlog of your videos since the algorithm threw Strawberry Miku at me weeks back, and I'm idly listening to the Patreon roll while I'm typing something else - and I tuned back in and nearly started crying. It just kind of hit me really hard just how many names you were saying compared to older videos. You deserve it so much, I'm so glad to see the growth and how you'll take things to new heights.

I would do the triangles of the top with a lining the same fabric (You would cut it in double) basically do 2 triangle parts, then sew it together with an elastic stitch and turn it to the right side. The down part as you did, and unite both with an elastic stitch . For the strings I would use some cool trim fabric and done, just because I don't like bias tape. But if you like it and use it a lot I suggest buying a foot guide for bias tape for house machine, I found a kit that have 30 different foot guides for the machine on Amazon.

Pog first sponsor!!!!!!!! Thank you for posting this Sarah. My mother is getting older and her ways of teaching are suffering for it. Thank you for being thorough in your explanations and visuals, being unable to sew as a cosplayer is unnecessarily embarrassing and I'm excited to start doing it more often for upcoming projects (: As always, appreciate your work

I recently got a sewing machine after wanting one for years, so I'm now getting into sewing in a big way. I've only been thinking about making my own skirts and dresses, but your channel has made me start thinking about getting into cosplay. It's never really been my scene (I did one thrift/found cosplay of a human genderbent troll from HS lol) but I love dressing up and now that I have the tools at my hands maybe I'll try my hand at making something. I especially liked your video of Miku's fork - I think it's important that more people are educated about chemical dangers and I like that you showed some alternative ways to craft.

Your videos are amazing! I found the "can this cosplay win an international contest" video and started to binge your videos, and they inspired me to start sewing. I made one of the beaded strawberries from the strawberry dress video and I was so proud lmao i showed it to a bunch of my friends at school. im gonna start sewing my own cosplays but first im gonna work on stitching somewhat decently lol. your videos are so informative and they manage to keep me, someone with the attention span of a fruit fly, entertained for longer periods of time than most videos. thank you for all your hard work!

My grandma taught me to sew by hand and use the sewing machine and surger, how to use patterns. Im thinking about relearning because I never continued after middle school except a quilt I had help with. Thanks for making this video and all the detail you go into. Noob mistake I was making was trying to use bobbins from a different machine, and super frustrated it wasnt working
