Better late than never? Joe is my favorite because I instantly knew the character (and the music at the concluding remarks) even though I wouldn't be able to identify any of the others. 😂 (I practice many crafts so I can see that he was perhaps not very likely to win, but every genuine attempt is worthy of respect.) I understand wanting to put a celebrity on stage if you can but it's not fair to anyone involved, celebrity included, to ask someone to make consequential decisions outside their scope of knowledge.

3:30 I've always known sandbagging to mean that you are pretending to be worse than you are. Doing so in order to get a much more favorable matchup/handicap, then unleashing your true ability. I'd say the cosplay definition vaguely fits ib with that. "Oh, this costume of mine? I dont know, probably not that great is it??"

If you can fit it, I would recommend a standing mat with your booth. That way when you're standing hours on end it's not horrible for you

Oh! At 12:00 I have a little more insight. Having attended and performed at Anime Nebraskon cosplay contest, I can attest that it was a straight up slap to the faces of all the contestants in 2022. Not only did they take 3 hours to judge, but generally they would keep the audience entertained and have the winners of each award (and there's a decent number of these) come back on stage to accept and the judges take a moment to congratulate and explain why they won or any specific aspects they love of their work. Instead - and I kid you not - the awards moved to a smaller room and I don't know if a single person really went to wait on the results. The reason - the dance party was going to use the stage and they wanted to prep for that. They have continued to do this since. What's worse it that they did not upload the winner to their social media right away - and when they did there we're any photos of the winners / awards for the event.

Hihi! I just found your channel, and felt like I needed to share a cosplay horror story of mine! (Please don’t call me stupid- I am incredibly naive and had experienced the “gut feeling” one time before) TLDR: Some creep wants to have sex with me and doesn’t understand that “no” means “no”, so I get him blacklisted from every comic convention (major and small) in Southern California and a couple in the surrounding states as well as the most world renown one in San Diego and banned from pretty much all cosplay and convention groups on Facebook. Back in December of 2017, I joined a cosplay group based in San Diego. I’m not going to name the group, but I will say that it centers around an extremely popular fandom. Anyways, I see that there’s an event for Make a Wish the following day (a Saturday) so I reached out and posted onto the group page, explaining that I was new to the group and was looking for a ride to and from the venue (I have my license, but due to crippling anxiety, I’m unable to drive for long periods of time) Enter PA (Perverted A$$hat) He is about ten years older than I am, somewhat overweight, and the most unattractive dude I have ever met. At first, I thought that he was an overall nice guy. So anyways, he sent me a private message over Facebook, explaining that he didn’t have a car, but if I picked him up, we could take the trolley (public transportation) to where he would meet his friends. I, of course, agreed. So I pulled up to where I was picking him up, and he was carrying a big duffle bag. He tossed it into my car and gets in. I thought that his costume was in the bag so I didn’t say anything. We make small talk all the way to the trolley station (about three to five miles down the road) He tells me that things at his place were unstable and that he didn’t want his crazy roommate to destroy his stuff. I tell him to ask me ahead next time; while I didn’t mind storing his stuff in my car, the alarm system was in DIRE need of repair, and I didn’t want to be held responsible in case someone broke into my car and took his stuff. At this point, my stomach was feeling weird (I had just started a new medication for heartburn a few days before, and my doctor had told me that this was a common side effect) We get our tickets to the trolley and board. No harm there. We continue to make small talk all the way up to the stop where he usually meets his friends. We get off and head inside of Starbucks to grab something to treat ourselves to with while we waited for our ride. He tells me that he has to use the bathroom, so I offer to buy him his drink so that way we’d save on time. He goes inside (it’s a one person bathroom) and I so waited. And waited. And waited. Eventually, a Starbucks staff member comes and banged on the door, threatening to go get the key. JA comes out, face bright red and panting slightly. I only asked him if he was alright as I hand him his drink. He tells me that he was fine and we both go to sit in the outside area and wait for his friends to show up. His friends show up a few minutes later and me and the two new (now ex) friends we hit it off. Throughout the day, I keep catching JA staring at me. It creeped me out a bit but I just shrugged it off, thinking that I had a smudge of dirt on my face or something. By the end of the event, I was feeling a bit ill from the “heartburn meds” (I assumed) so I told him that once we’ve arrived back at the Santee trolley center, he’d have to find his own way back home. I had strike/ final of term later that night with my theatre class (it’s where we all get together and tear down the set in preparations of the next show) I told him that I would be unable to talk until the following day (strike normally ran from seven or eight at night to a little after one or two in the morning) Early the next morning while I’m getting ready for that day’s event with the group that I’d recently became a member of (at the Ronald McDonald House) he texts me and our conversation goes a bit like this: ME: by the way, why were you looking at me all day yesterday? PA: because I want to kiss you ME: why? PA: we should be friends with benefits ME: HELL NO! I’M NOT A WHORE PA: but you could be my whore He then begins to send me a long string a lewd messages before asking me if I could send him a nude. ME: HELL NO NOW GO TO HELL I blocked him so fast his head must’ve spun round. I then took screenshots of everything that he had said to me, and sent them to everyone I knew on social media who was a cosplayer or managed a group related to cosplay. It wasn’t until the following day that I found out that he has a police record of assault with attempt to rape. Needless to say, he got kicked out of every comic convention in Southern California including the big one in San Diego and even a few people refuse to make cosplays for him.

I hate how people who get mad at this. The concerts are very close together and they already have to do lighting, getting the literal vocoloids ready, planning the concert, and releasing it on the internet. They have to do all of that in abt 3 weeks so do u rlly expect them to make a hologram in that amount of time it’s basically impossible. Also saying a hologram is made out of cleverly placed glass sheets and a screen and it’s quite literally impossible to find that amount of glass in that short amount of time as well as most theaters not allowing it. The concert is NOT about the hologram it’s about the light sticks, miku, vocolids, and just having fun, you could’ve had more fun if you simply just ignored it. I went a couple of days ago and it was the best day of my life. ALSO the graphics are amazing she still looks the same except with a border, If you want a hologram buy ur own massive glass sheet or go to Japan. It’s not that simple

As I have seen exactly Zero men in this video I am going to assume this carrier path as much as interesting and entertaining is not even a thing for men since we have problems to even find pictures online of the male cosplay we wanted to do. However there is one path that I see you did not cover witch I think is also the downfall of normal cosplayers that are just doing it for fun and that is "Modeling". Today famous cosplayers are basically mostly models. They don't make their outfit. They go to a shooting, professionals make their make up, cloths and photos. So essentially it's modeling and that is not a new trade of work at all. It's well established and very brutal to survive in.

I crochet pieces and often a plushie could be 20 hours or so. This means that in my country it could be 200… and no one is gonna pay that for a plushie. So I do it as a hobby to reduce it.

A crochet plushie despite taking 20 hours to make? Is there a faster way to make it? Something like that really should only cost $15-60 USA dollars ... Depending on how elaborate, cute, usage... Hat, Gloves, Costume piece or maybe a dog or cat hat ...

@ I can make hats and that kinda thing but I really enjoy making genshin plushies of animals in game for commissions… and well yeah they get intricate. Also crochet cannot be done by machine. Also with hats if I did a basic one it would be bottom price 25 for a simple hat using basic yarn…

I have a degree in Fashion Design. I have done Wedding apparel till I just couldn't deal with the bridezillas anymore. Then I switched to doing costume design for the stage. That would take over my whole life and often my house because somehow everything would end up in my house. It was cool to have my costumes being worn and over 10k people seeing them in a two-week timeframe. I never got into Cosplay. My niece loves it as a hobby. She doesn't make a living at it or even try to, she is a doctor of pharmacology. She makes way more money doing her day job. I am impressed with her costume design and execution though. I can't even imagine going back to making costumes for the stage. I had moved into Graphic design and then discovered by accident that I love Motion Graphics and especially doing animation. Going to be starting a KZbin Channel.

As a hobby knitter, some people blanch when I tell them what I would charge to do a commission, because they are used to the fast fashion/super mechanized/low quality materials/underpaid employees. Its the same for crochet, quilting, sewing, costuming, etc, communities. The work is severely undervalued by the general public.

I'm a volunteer cosplayer and as much as I love being around kiddos and getting to be a positive light to them, I came to a point where before an event I grown "I don't want to be a princess anymore." It can be so taxing on your body. While 90% was non-profit volunteering as we worked mostly with charity organizers, there were times our group did get paid. Most was $500 each for entertaining at a County Fair.

I'm an ex Costumer. Making and wearing Star Wars/Aliens/Stargate/etc for groups like The 501st. How much did we make? Zero! Even making spare props (like Vader belts, Trooper lids) for others. And I was making them for friends, so at cost! We did charge companies for our appearances, but that was just a charity donation. And no we didn't even charge for expenses. Any travel and accommodation was out of our own pockets. We did it for the love of our hobby. Not to make money. Our definition of Costumer vs Cosplay...Accuracy. We had to ensure our stuff was screen accurate, and normally had to submit our costumes to approvers to pass our costumes against agreed (by the group) standards. Cosplay came late in my costuming career 1999-2009 (I had to give up due to illness, a Vader costume is not an environment for someone with progressed MS) and yeah it was a personal expression and not limited to being accurate.

One of the last lines in this video really hit home. I was a fairly successful latex clothing designer for years. (~50k for four years-ish) Even though I’ve loved it all my life, engaging my community and passion as a full-time job/ lifestyle cost me friendships, relationships, and in the end, most of my love for the work itself. But…. ….I would do it all again. Those were the most fun years of my life. Sarah is giving out a ton of good advice here. Consider the hours. Consider your relationship to the customer. Keep your information off the Internet. Value your time. Be able to recognize burnout. Good luck, everyone! 💜

Why does it seem like most nerd communities are just filled with horrible people? The sheer number of stories in these comments is absurd, I'd expect one or two but not dozens and dozens of horribly rude people. What is wrong with these communities that they allow such behavior? Its especially confusing considering how progressive most of these events are. Like you're really going to demand everyone use your specialized pronouns and then trash talk people in a wheel chair?? Make it make sense!

Recently I tried to get a commission for a wig. I expected to pay around $200. I was unable to find anyone due to the unusual nature of the wig; it's for a robot I'm making from the show Murder Drones. So I decided to learn to make wigs. I already have respect for people who make cosplay professionally, but I've gained even more respect for wig makers. It's a really cool craft as well.
