For the past 4 years I've lived 3 hours from the closest city and it has been a huge improvement to my quality of life. Has it been good for my filmmaking career?

I’ve followed your channel for a while but didn’t know you moved to the NE four years ago. Super cool to hear you’re back in your element and business has actually increased. Same here….after 26 years in NYC I’m now a nomadic filmmaker and full time here on KZbin.

Plus...Fall in New England is absolutely glorious. That's what I miss most about Connecticut when I moved to Canada.

I moved from a small town to a big city to work in film because I thought that's where I needed to be. After living and working here for a year, I've decided to move back to my smaller town (which I preferred) because even though production offices were in the city, most of the time I was on location in remote areas that were actually CLOSER to my small town. I'm in production and as long as I'm there at my call time nobody actually cares where I'm coming from.

It's also easier to find a core group of people to work with in a small town.

I live in Berlin NH and I’m having a tough time with finding clients. I love the beauty that this place has so I make it work.

I find it easier to make in ti a smaller town. There is less competition and people are generally more inclined to let you use their locations or film their stuff. I've done a lot out in Clarksville, only because there is so much access there to things I would normally have in my city.

Great video! I'm in a similar situation up here in Canada. 2 key takeaways to make this work: You need to already be established/good at what you do and have lots of connections elsewhere. It's a very different ball game if you are starting from scratch. And the other big factor is the difference between doing the work and taking care of business… You can be amazing at filmmaking but you need to have the ability to run a business as well. Two very different skill sets. I wear all the hats at all times, in my experience...

Thanks for the video, helpful to hear your perspective. Can I ask what kind of films you are making? I have ideas for stories to tell through film, and I have essentially 0 interest in moving to LA or NY, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to tell the kinds of stories/in the way they should be told if I don’t have what those cities offer. Would appreciate your thoughts!

What is the definition of "making it" in the filmmaking world? To make a an honest living on filmmaking alone or funding your films from money made in an entirely different trade?

I don't know about you, but I can't focus on working on my film stuff at home. I have a very expensive desktop and I almost never use it because I can't focus at the house. So I do everything on my laptop.
