Wrong photo. The Life of Riley with Jackie Gleason aired in the '40s. William Bendix played the lead role in the version that ran during the '50s.

I missed 5, and though I knew the names of a few of the characters of various shows, I didn't get the show's name right. However, you must realize that in the 50's, the only control I had over the t.v. was, I got to go outside to turn the antenna in order to get the best reception. I was more subjected to watching things like Liberace, Lawrence Welk, Ed Sullivan, Milton Berle, and the like. But then again, we didn't even have a t.v. until 56 or 57. I think it was a Zenith or an RCA. However, my great uncle had the first t.v. I ever saw...it was a DuMont.

@jimtrue1465
@jimtrue1465 Ай бұрын
@@quizziemcguire065 In the two cases I mentioned above, the name change undoubtedly was made to emphasize the stars' names. And possibly people were calling the shows by the star's name anyway, so the producers made the changes so they would be easier to find in the TV listings of the newspapers or TV Guide. A more recent example would be the Ellen DeGeneres sitcom of the 90s, which was called These Friends of Mine during the first season, but renamed simply Ellen for the rest of the run.

When TV was a new entertainment venue, the stars did know they were stars, so they just signed on the show just to get exposure. When the show became a hit, they renegotiated their contracts to name the show after themselves. Some of the better-known artist names were listed right from the state to use as a draw for the show.

George and Gracy (The Burns and Allen Show) remains one of the funniest series ever produced for television. I still watch Dobbie Gillis quite regularly today. (For those who don't know Bob Denver (Gilligan) name was Maynard G Krebs. Dobbie's beatnik friend. If you are unfamilar with what a beatnik is, think hippies without the flower power. Way too much time allowed..I got most of them instantly at 2x. (Full disclosure, I misidentified The Danny Thomas Show for "Make Room for Daddy" and did not know "My Little Margie") Notably missing: "Life with Elizabeth" (Betty White...who could have been featured several times), "I Married Joan" (Joan Davis and Jim Bachus (Mr Magoo, Thurston Howell III)) & The Real McCoys (Walter Brennan). Pushing 70 myself, so these were easy peazy. Don't ask me what I did ten minutes ago, but the 1950's is as clear as a bell.

We had a TV in 1949 in Chatham, NJ. Close enough to get maybe two stations on an antenna from New York City. They were on for just a few hours a day. I do remember watching Kuckla, Fran and Ollie as a kid. The TV had a huge cabinet and a seven-inch-or-so screen. Mostly it was a test screen with bands of lines emanating from a circle in the center showing an Indian chief mug shot in full headdress.
