I didn't know who was going to play him, since no one in the cast seemed like they'd be perfect for the role. And Jim Gaffigan seems like one of those comedians who should have been on SNL (as either a writer or cast member) ages ago (like, the mid-to-late 1990s when Will Ferrell and Darrell Hammond were on there). Maybe he was one of those conedians who tried out for or was offered a chance to be on SNL and didn't make it or turned down the offer.

For the 50th I’d be happy if the cold open had a solid sprinkling of alumni. I think the post-Lorne era of SNL could be a balance of best of today with a deep bench of legends. Shrink the cast a little bit and use the legends to mentor not just the performers but also the writers. Somebody learned something from having three all-timers (and Gaffigan) on set this week and we got a killer sketch on top of it.
