This video is both EXTREMELY helpful AND timely. I just bought a 40/50-ish yr old china cabinet that is a combo of materials and I intend to paint it white. A friend said, "Oh, with all the new paints nowadays, you don't have to bother with extra steps." Sure- but if you want the thing to not only look good but last, you should 'bother'!😃 Thank you for all your clear and concise info. Great video!

Thanks for putting the work in. You've proved what I thought must be true. And since I hope not to repaint for years, the extra work of sanding and doing the top coat is absolutely worth it to avoid having to re-do the job in just a few month because I wanted to save an hour or less now.

Sanding will help in the long run especially with laminate. It helps the paint and primer bond better to the surface so it should hold up to wear and tear overtime better.

Hi belle thanks for the great video! Just wondering how does ikea laminate furniture go with spray paint?
@HamptonYourHouse4 жыл бұрын
I haven't had a good try with spray paint on laminate, but I would suggest using a spray primer for plastics before you put the spray paint colour coat on, and a top coat might help it to last better too. You could also ask in your local hardware store for tips and suggestions! 🥰

Do you think you can skip primer if you sand it? So pretty much sanding -> 2 coats of paint -> topcoat. Or do you still advise to add a primer? I also saw many people do 2 coats of EACH step, do you feel like that'd help or is it unnecessary? Thank you so much for this video, it's definitely making me see why all these steps are important!
@HamptonYourHouse2 жыл бұрын
I would say if you are painting a more "plastic-y" surface like laminate, it's a good idea to do the primer as well, with wood and wood veneer the paint will probably stick better without primer so you could give that a go if you'd like to! Sometimes with real wood the "tannins" (juices from the wood) end up bleeding through your paint after a year or so though - this is where an undercoat is helpful, but an oil-based one is really the only thing that stops that problem in my experience. But you could just touch it up with paint if anything bleeds through too! I usually go with as many prep steps as possible if it's in a high traffic area, and you could possibly leave out primer if it will be tucked away in a corner. I hope that helps!! Good luck with your projects!! 🥰

Sanding is always recommended as it create a profile for the paint to stick on (especially laminate). Can you advise if during this test you followed the required curing time (recommended) for each coat?

Thank you so much for this video. I want to paint my ikea bookcase, but I got so confused because I didn’t know how to do it. This video made it easy for me. I would like to ask you a few questions if you don’t mind. Can I use another type of primer? Like 2x ultra cover primer. Also, did it came out sticky or smooth?
@HamptonYourHouse3 жыл бұрын
You are so welcome! I looked up the 2x ultra cover primer - is it the Rustoleum one? From what I can see it says it bonds to plastics, so I think it should bond to a laminate/Ikea faux wood-type surface pretty well. It sounds similar to the one I used, just a different brand. And my primer came out sticky and stayed quite sticky even when dry - I think this helps the next layer of paint to bond to it. Hope that helps and all the best with your project! 😊

I did light sanding on laminate bookshelves and painted chalk paint and it chips right off :( do you think I should just paint top coat and it should be fine or remove all the paint prime it and then repaint it?
@HamptonYourHouse4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that, that is so frustrating! 😏 I think if it was me I would probably be wanting to sand off the paint and try again, and make sure you give it a good sand and clean, and prime too, especially if it's a cheap brand of chalk paint. You could also try using a higher quality chalk paint too if you haven't already, like Annie Sloan? I will be doing another test using her paint and wax soon. :) Good luck, I hope it all turns out well in the end!! 🥰

Just asking for a bit of advice. I’ve bought some IKEA inserts to go into a Kallax unit, it’s states on the website that they are fiberboard and coated in acrylic paint. Will this method work in repainting them or will another or easier method apply? Thanks :).
@HamptonYourHouse2 жыл бұрын
Hi, It probably depends on how shiny they are. If they have a really shiny slippery surface I would recommend sanding and a bit of spray primer, but if they're not the super shiny ones, you could try a good quality chalk paint with no prep if you like. If it was me, I would still sand them a bit first to give the paint a better chance of adhering, especially if it's something that will be used a lot. Hope that helps, and best of luck with your project! 😊

Hi, good test, though i was a decorator for forty years and alway's taught to sand with Fine sandpaper to form a "tooth" , Chalk Paint as good durability, as regards paint brushes Purdy are the best brushes, they are expensive but will last for years if you clean them well after usage.

Have you found that the paint on the unsanded part stayed on the same as for the sanded area?
@HamptonYourHouse4 жыл бұрын
The paint on the sanded test areas definitely seemed to hold that little bit better from what I could tell. Even just lightly sanding a surface can help to give the paint something to grip onto - especially if the item you're painting will be in a high traffic area and will be exposed to getting knocks. I'm planning on testing some other types of paint soon too, to get a better idea of how different brands of paint hold up. All the best with your painting projects and thanks so much for watching!! 🥰💜

So does laminate mean it’s not real wood
@HamptonYourHouse4 жыл бұрын
Yes that's right - laminate is made of plastic but made to look like wood (at least this is the term we use for it in Australia, other countries might use a different word?), and then usually stuck over chip-board to make the furniture. Not to be confused with a "wood veneer," which is a very thin slice of real wood stuck over either a cheaper wood or MDF/particle board or something similar. Hope that helps! 🥰
@valeriehofmann26153 жыл бұрын
So basically sand and prime no matter the paint or surface.
@HamptonYourHouse3 жыл бұрын
Fresh unpainted wood doesn't necessarily need any prep, unless the wood tannins are likely to bleed through, then a primer (oil-based works best to stop this) will help with that. With previously painted wood you could use a good quality chalk paint without priming or sanding if it's not going to be subject to much wear and tear. But I have four little kids, so for my situation I would recommend sanding at least, especially if the surface you're painting over is shiny. And for the Ikea furniture and laminate I would recommend more prep steps too, but it's up to you, like I said, depending on the amount of wear and tear you think each piece of furniture will be subjected to. Good luck with your projects, would love to hear how you go! 🥰

@@HamptonYourHouse I forgot to mention that I used rust oleum topside marine paint for my cabinets. It’s a special kind of oil based paint that expands so it’s less prone to cracking. I called the company and they said it was fine to use but I still used it on an old table of mine first and I am impressed with it. It dries rockhard so for things that are prone to chipping it’s perfect.
