Can You Pick the Professional Model Flute - FluteTips 135

Can you pick out the sound of a professional model flute compared to 4 intermediate “step-up” flutes - just by listening?
In this video I will play excerpts on 5 flutes: my professional and 4 intermediate flutes. First, I will tell you which flute I’m playing.
But then I will mix up the order and ask you to just listen and see if you can tell the which one is the professional model flute.
And if you’re really good at this, tell me which flute is which! Listen closely, I think you can do it.

My fave was the Di Zhao. I’m partial to it, as I have a DZ 700. I have a masters in music and played on a student model Prima Sankyo until 2021 when I bought the Di Zhao.

Hi Hermionemouse! I think you might be the first person to say the Di Zhao was the best! I do think it is a nice flute and for the price can't be beat. I too played on a student model flute for most of college. It's not great but you can do it if it all you have.

You need to ask The Flute centre NYC to send you 3 of their top priced pro flutes. Not that I can afford one but its nice to see a pro playing great instruments. All the flutes you played today sound really nice I would be happy to play any of them. But to me number 4 sounded nicest.

I picked #3 as the professional model as I thought it had a mellower sound than the rest - interesting to see it was a DiZhao, a make not well known in Europe. My Least favourite was #5 which by contrast is a well known make here. I find listening tests quite subjective as a first listen might be influenced by a person's mood at the time. A good test though and your comment that intermediate flutes can take you to a fairly high level was welcome news!

You are right that listening test vary according to how many times you are listening. That is why when you buy a new flute you want to work with it for a few days to actually find the tone that is perfect for you. I have a student or two that play on intermediate flutes as flute majors at college. They can really get fantastic sounds on these instruments.

Tee, hee, hee! I was just wondering if your daughter picked one of these flutes and was thinking that it would be fun to hear you play on each of them, too! Thank you also for the listening test while doing my daily tasks! I am guessing your flute is #4 (slightly darker sound and some notes cracking from adjusting back to inline) . Powell May be #1, Amadeus #2, Di Zhao #4, and Trevor James #5. I doubt any are right because you play them well and sound like you!! They are all very nice intermediate instruments!

I believe that the Haynes Amadeus was my favorite but a close second was the Powell Sonare.

@@DoctorFlute Ahh yes, it's all in the flutist! =) Recently I went back to a $70 Amazon flute and realized the tone there sounds almost as good as my Trevor James, though it took a little more effort to get that tone.

You are right on the money!
