The issue maybe that the output power sine wave changes when switching to battery. This causes the next UPS to think it has a bad power feed and switches to battery. This could cause each UPS to trigger the next inline to switch to battery.

At 2:40 you can see two UPSs with errors detecting power. Numbering from left to right, UPS 1 and 3 cannot detect the UPS to their right. Obviously, UPS 1 is the most critical one. Also, I noticed that all 8 UPSs detected a power failure. I am not sure what their power failure detection sensitivity range is, but you could probably tweak it in settings to make them work better together. Their voltage sensitivity seems to be too tight, perhaps, also, meaning that if the UPS sends out 110VAC and the trip is around 108 VAC, there could a low voltage detect error on UPS 1 and 3, thus shutting down the whole experiment early.

Thanks for being super comprehensive with the test. Really appreciate it. Clears a lot of doubt (especially the practical aspect of using 2 UPS chain for increased runtime). I think the reason for the first test failure might be because of either: 1. at least one bad apple is in the chain that's not letting the power pass through as intended, making the next one go on back up (changing the order especially for the last 2-3 of the load end may give easy answer to whether this is the case) 2. or, the pass through may be introducing minimal power-factor/phase-shift (or some other form of deformation of the sine-wave) which is getting worse by each stage. At a certain point after a few links of the daisy chain, the next one thinks of it as bad (dirty) mains power & decides to switch to back up I don't know whether you'll be able to retest these (cause it's a costly endeavor, both time & money wise). But if you do, I'll look forward to it.

Cool test. In the setup menus of each UPS you can adjust how sensitive they are to "bad power" and the min/max voltage to trigger the switchover. I wonder if tweaking the setup you could make this work better with multiple units?

Very useful video thank you! I know I'm late to the party but it would help to know you swapped out the #2 ups in the 1st test in case it was defective. Also it would have been helpful to run one more test adding a 3rd ups to the chain. But thank you anyway, all I wanted to know is if I could chain two together and it appears I can. kudos!

Thank you its a temp fix till new batt comes in , so good to know two seems okay , I checked APC and seems fine if its just two anymore is hella weird.

The problem was with the output of the ones that were not pure sine wave. But you showed that if you put a UPS that outputs pure sine wave that having UPS in parallel should work.

replace a pair of OEM bat with multi parallel batts to get the max Ah. you will run it as a great deal as save money with more run time.

I bought a CyberPower A1500sp1 designed to power a 1/2 horse sump pump as a back up system. It only runs 2-3 hours. Do you think I could daisy chain two or more to get longer protection? The output sign wave is a “simulated sign wave”. Great video explanation and test.

@distractor_beamreviews Жыл бұрын
The short answer is a positive maybe. Although the technology in these things is much better than it was a handful of years ago, simulated sine waves have been known to not play nicely with each other. For anything serious, I'd always recommend getting a larger single unit designed for the intended purpose.

@@distractor_beamreviews do you have a recommendation on what larger unit to get? I too am looking to run a sump pump for about 8 hrs and these are only able to last about 2-3 hrs

@@davidroberts8568 Unfortunately these things get pretty expensive past 1500va. The only one I've used in that range is www.amazon.com/APC-SRT5KXLT-Smart-UPS-5000VA-208V/dp/B01L24FYGW but it's 208v so it won't work for your scenario. This might work for your purpose www.amazon.com/APC-SMX3000RMLV2UNC-100-127V-Smart-UPS-Network/dp/B004FIP7NS but if I was looking at paying that amount, I'd probably be considering a powerwall or something of that nature.

those USP have fake charge times they are just timers. but the discharge is accurate measure. just charging is not. I bet the UPS that were cut off in the middle were not fully charged.

Are you using all pure sinewave units or all modified sinewave units or half & half? If you're mixing them I am not certain but I think that the pure sinewave units will not like the power output of the modified sinewave units being fed into them that's just my guess but without being there to test this theory I'm not sure.

@@Distractor_Beam hmm that is odd then that they weren't working liking being connected to each other. It could just be cyber power ups not liking being daisy chained.

@@Distractor_Beam All of the UPS manufacturers recommenced against daisy-chaining, and some went into an explanation as to why. I didn't feel like reading anything technical, so I took to KZbin for a quick video and found yours. I didn't really learn why it doesn't work, but you did show me that the behavior is unpredictable and that I should probably listen to what the manufacturer says. I can't tell if your two UPS setup actually works, or, if it was just lucky coin flip and next time it might not work.
