MAS Epoxy Resins CAN be applied over some oil-based stains. There are a few factors that you will need to consider before attempting.
1. The stain has to be fully dry!
We used Varathane Premium - Ebony, for this example. The can maintains it will be dry in 1 hour, we let it fully dry for 5 days then used a clean white rag and whipped the surface. There was no residue on the rag so we know the oil stain has fully dried and it's ready to have the epoxy resin poured on it.
2. Seal Coat
Our chemist Mike recommends applying a seal coat, which is just a very thin layer of epoxy resin that will help prevent bubbles and "bury" the oil under the surface. Seal coats normally do not look the best, you can expect to see a lot of deviations, orange peel, and fish eyes. Mike also recommended using MAS Tabletop Pro, thinned with 5% denatured alcohol. So you would mix up part A and part B then add 5% (of the total volume) of denatured alcohol. So if you mixed up 100 mL of Tabletop, you would want to add 5 mL of denatured alcohol to it. ( 100 * .05 = 5)
3. Seal Coat - Round 2
After the seal coat dries, sand down the deviations, liberally wash the piece down with denatured alcohol or acetone and apply another seal coat. Some people will pour 2-3 seal coats ensuring they have a smooth flat and perfect surface for the flood coat.
4. Flood Coat!
Now that the entire surface is completely smooth flat and perfect, its time to pour your flood coat!

So you recommend water based stains? Would this also apply to like a river table type project as well. Would you be able to stain the wood? And how would that work for the edges of the wood in the epoxy pour.

Hi, really hope you see this and respond. Newbie alert. So I would like to stain a table top in your video you recommend water based. Ok. Next step… do I seal that stain after however many passes with wax/polyvine etc first?? Then after that step, if that’s something I should do, do I now apply a thin layer of resin? Is this what you call a seal coat??? Then after it’s try, are you saying, I need to sand that back with a 120-150??? Do I then use a 320-400 to smooth it out? Then another “seal” coat? And again sand back??? Then a flood coat? And do I use the heat gun to get rid of bubbles in 1st,2nd and 3rd coats? I would just like to know the steps I should take in order? And going back to video you scored the resin how would you then sand that off? Is that the only way to check adhesion? Thanks

Hi! Okay, so no to the wax! No wax or poly vine!!! And you can probably just do 1 or 2 coats of resin to ‘seal’ coat it. One should do the trick but sometimes a second is best to smooth out any divots! In between layers of resin we just recommend scuffing it up with rough sandpaper. Can be 80-100grit just to give the resin something to grip on to.

Great video! I have been trying to find an answer to this question: Can I apply epoxy resin over a thin minwax polycrylic layer? If not, can I apply epoxy resin over an archival uv spray layer? Thanks for your time. 😁

Hi! We would not advise applying our epoxies over poly as it can lead to delamination issues. Epoxy generally does not bond well to polys. However you can always apply poly over epoxy. Same goes for the UV spray. You would want UV protection over the epoxy if the project is going to get UV exposure.

@@masepoxies awesome thank you so much for the response. Just so you know, this is what I'm looking to do. I'm a professional pyrographer (wood burner) looking to test out epoxy on some pieces. Sometimes, I use white charcoal, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, gouache or pastels for bright highlights & at times color. If the piece isn't sealed before applying a varnish the whites (colors) can smear messing up the piece. So when it comes to epoxy resin, what do think would be the best way to seal in the whites (colors) prior to the epoxy? Now there is a caveat... I would need a sealant that doesn't darken the wood too much. I definitely appreciate the help. 😁

I’ve been searching all over the internet for an answer… I’m working on a bathroom floor that’s got wood cookies filled with sawdust/wood glue in the cracks. It’s got a coat of Thompsons water seal and I’m wondering if it’s possible to use epoxy to level everything out and will it adhere to the sealer on the wood?

I want to do an ash desk - it is stained with a hardoil with white pigment - I want to water and stain proof it ( think ink and coffee) Do you think I could do : 1) Sanding 2) wipe off dust 3) denatured alcohol 4) lots of seal coats and sanding? I do not want a thick epoxy coat, I want a more matte, natural look and I do not have any experience with epoxy pours. Also, I should do both table sides back to back with the seal coats to avoid warping I guess ? It is a 2m x80cm tabletop. Do I have to apply UV protectant ? In which layers ? What happens if I do not ? Did I overlook something ?

Hi there! I asked one of my smarty pants coworkers to answer this question for you, so I apologize for taking a bit to respond! Here is what they recommended: "They can sand it to 220 grit and stain it with a water based stain, let it sit for 5 days to let the moisture flash off. After that, they can apply a thin layer of table top with a foam brush at the desired thickness they want. Once that is cured, sand up to 2000 grit wiping the surface clean before changing grits for a matte finish."

I just received an expensive unfinished mahogany (new) front door to install. I originally wanted to stain it (water based) then polyurethane it. However we now have a 6 mth old Golden Retriever that jumps up on the inside of our existing door when she needs to go outside to "potty". I am now thinking about epoxy for protection from her. The front of our house (in NE Georgia) gets a lot of heat and sun from the south. I saw where you advised UV protection over the epoxy if the project is going to get UV exposure. I have no epoxy experience. Please advise on using epoxy on this door and how to do it, and how to use the UV product on the outside of it, do you sell the UV product, etc. Tks.

I applied table top epoxy resin to some black walnut. When it dried, it was way way less dark in color than when I applied water to the wood in order to see the color. What is the best thing I can do to bring out that dark color before applying my epoxy??
@masepoxies
@masepoxies 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! This is strange! It should have gotten the same amount of dark as when you wet it with water. In this case, we recommend maybe getting an even darker water-based stain than last time.

This was great information thanks. I've been trying to contact product information on your website to ask about which resin should I purchase for ocean pours with foamy waves but it keeps telling me to fix the errors on the form??? I kept double checking my form and found none. Anyways, I see a lot of artists using the table top resin in there ocean art but noticed you also sell Art resin? Is is a difference of thickness, scratch and heat resistance? I will go search for a video comparing your resins but if there isn't one could you explain because I would like to try MAS. Thanks

My bar top is ethanol stained and then sealed with Zinsser sanding sealant. The epoxy finish on top has looked great for 8 months but now a little moisture from the oak is shining beneath the finishes and on the edge it is starting to blister. I will need to repeat the project I know but how do I stop any remnant moisture in the timber(and there will be some) showing through the finish in time? The bar has morning sun through the windows and the moisture has released from the timber this summer. The oak is kiln dried prime too. Any guidance gratefully received Thanks Martin

Which epoxy would you recommend over water based stain on hardwood (likely walnut) for a chefs knife? Would it be dishwasher safe? And would it offer a decent grip not highly polished? Could I just do a couple alcohol/epoxy seal coats and it lock in the pattern and be durable? Trying to think out of the box for a project that is trying to mimic paint brush strokes and rust bleeding.

@@masepoxies I finished the project with Starbond CA glue applied with finger to get the rustic look I was going after. I tried to use exterior DAP rapid fuse CA glue but the gel did not work at all. I looked at your Table Top Pro and did not see any small bottles of it to try. The CA glue is thin and absorbed into the wood well, the epoxy I tried was too thick without thinning. So far they are washing the knife by had and I tried a test piece submerged in water with 4 coats for 48 hours and poured boiling water over it and it was fine. So I went with it. I made it for my SIL to match her Mackenzie Child's decor and my BIL loves the knife, it's his go to knife now. LOL I gave the knife blade which was an old Chicago Cutlery knife from the SIL she was going to throw away. It holds a very sharp edge well. Good grip when wet even, I was surprised. I gave it a directional sanding after this picture and the rust highlights do not show up in the picture very well with the poor lighting. i.imgur.com/RrA8ywt.jpg FWIW, this is what was the inspiration. www.mackenzie-childs.com/royal-check-cork-back-placemats---set-of-4/32618-240.html#lg=1&slide=2

Hi I'm a contractor in California. I have a new client that has a beautiful maple bartop that last month he laquered. He hired me to epoxy coat it. Would just a quick scuff with 220 be sufficient enough for a mechanical bond. Also I'm worried about fish eyes. I would appreciate some tips🤙
@masepoxies
@masepoxies 2 жыл бұрын
We suggest using the test in the video to make sure the epoxy will bond to the lacquer. Before attempting the test make sure the lacquer is fully cured and scuff it with 220. If the epoxy bonds, when going full scale, we would recommend scuffing with 220, vacuuming the sanding debris, and wiping down with a lint free rag and acetone before over coating.

Great question. Overcoating oil paintings with epoxy can be done. There are several youtube videos on the subject. Making sure the painting is fully dry and free of dust or other contaminates before pouring is key. Keep in mind, every project is unique. Artwork especially so. What works well for one person, might not be the best approach for another. Feel free to experiment. When in doubt, small scale testing is always a good idea. Make a small test panel using the same paints and try and coat it. If it holds up your good to go.

There are a variety of tints and alcohol inks on the market to color epoxy. Weather any of them would give the appearance of stained mahogany I don't know. That would require some testing.
