Here are two simulators you can try to see if you can predict the stock market using randomly selected historical data from actual markets. But once you see how futile trying to time the markets is, here is some food for thought on how you can be a more successful long-term investor.
When you see the stock market in the news, remember you are looking at 100% equity stock indexes. A proper portfolio will be diversified across multiple markets and asset classes.
The reason buy and hold can work so well, is that it's hard to beat, and is simple to understand. But careful! Simple doesn't not mean easy!

I didn't beat the market but still turned a profit: The $10,000 you invested turned into $27,304. If you hadn't made any trades you would have made $10,981 more-leaving an ending balance of $38,284. At the time you reinvested, your trade had cost you only $3,939 but it ended up costing you $7,041 more because of the compounded gains you missed.

I beat the market. S&P 500 between the week of Mar. 7, 2003 and the week of Feb. 15, 2013. It says "The $10,000 you invested turned into $27,710. If you hadn't made any trades you would have made $9,374 less-leaving an ending balance of $18,335. " and second time from the week of Jul. 14, 1995 to the week of Jun. 24, 2005. "The $10,000 you invested turned into $23,586. If you hadn't made any trades you would have made $2,303 less-leaving an ending balance of $21,282. "

I always predict an imminent market crash. And I'm right 1 day every 8-10 years on average ;) I always find prices of assets too high. There is so much fiat money in circulation and so little investment opportunities in comparaison. Bonds, stock market, real estate, indexes. That's about it. That's mainly why prices of assets go up. And on the other side, small companies with valid business models struggle to fund their business because they aren't public, and they borrow money at 5-10% interest rate. 5-10% is the interest rate a plumber would get to buy a $30,000 truck. And I'm sure he's going to make a lot of profit with that truck. I wish I could invest my money with 5-10% interest rate with essentially no risk ;)
