I’m a firefighter and EDC my single edge (with half serration’s) Ultratech on duty and off for the last four years and haven’t baby’d it the slightest through all of its everyday uses. Through this, I’ve needed to sharpened it about ten times to varying degrees (to keep it super sharp) and have also needed to clean it every few months (with a couple disassembly’s) to keep it very reliably functioning. I know you’re not supposed to disassemble for factory warranty reasons but double action Microtechs are actually brilliantly simple inside and very easy to take apart and reassemble in order to really clean the insides of their only real operational enemy…. pocket lint that can get deep inside the knife’s sliding surfaces and doesn’t always come out with Rem-oil and compressed air cleanings.

Thanks for your input … I just bought a utx85 and was wondering about microtech and getting as much info as I can … I got my utx 85 on the way … now my question is how long were you able to use it before you had to sharpen it ? And do you send it in or do you sharpen it yourself for that ?
@SpecterSeventy24 ай бұрын
@@jkbear29 I sharpen it myself and sorry but I don’t have a clear answer on how often I do. It can vary between a couple weeks or a couple months. That’s because it all depends on what I’m cutting, how much and how sharp I want to keep my knife.

I have been using microtech otf knifes for 8 years now,it has never failed on me,I only broken 2 blade tips on the double edge models but that was my fault,the blades are strong but not invincible,fantastic knifes I also use folding knives which are a little better for hard use but i have a soft spot fot otf’s

They are amazing quality but the tip and edges are very thin, I always been a EDC Pry bar with me to avoid breaking the tips. I typically EDC Folders and use them hard, but i bought this specific microtech to beat and see how it would hold up vs a benchmade or spyderco folder. So far it's still going strong!. I own several, and I’ve only had problems out of one that I purchased secondhand. Apparently the previous owner put some sort of oil in it. Maybe vegetable oil? It wasn’t a petroleum product however it took me a long time to take it apart and clean all that stuff out of it. After it was clean and I put some REM oil in it it’s been perfect. I believe that people who purchased OTF knives. Especially new owners that don’t have the dexterity and strength to open and close. It may try to use oil to fix that problem.

I carry one every day. I think they are the safest knife design for opening packages, baggies, cutting the hedges, etc. because you can retract the blade much easier than other designs if you can't put it back into your pocket. You mentioned the special driver for the screws, mine came with the driver. I probably bought a counterfeit by mistake.

I have always wanted a microtech OTF, the new Gen 3 Combat troodon has torx screws which finally pushed me into buying one for my 30th birthday which is actually tomorrow. I am not buying a 500 dollar knife that has springs and mechanical stuff going on I cannot take apart and clean and trouble shoot lol. I have been carrying it about a week and I really like it so far, hopefully in a couple years I will have some cool war stories. Like my Spyderco military I carried for like 8 years, that beast got dropped off the 2nd floor of a parking garage by accident. The handle also pried open the mechanism on a ratchet strap that had a dudes hand caught really bad and it is still good to go, albeit maybe a little more off center than it was new.. ha. I LOVE that knife, hope to say to same from the troodon. I dont expect it to be quite as robust as the military due to the complexity but my standards aren't exactly low either

I’ve found that OTF (double action) is the absolute handiest knife to have for everyday stuff. Being able to get it out, open it, close it safely and get it back in your pocket one handed is the best, especially when you are using your other hand for something else.

You don't need to buy their bit driver. Melt the end of a plastic pen and press it to the screw head and it will mold. Free tool. Won't strip the screw head either since the plastic will just deform if you over torque it.

They are great for edc because many times when u need to cut open anything u need to do it fast with one hand on the thing ur cutting. To be able to open and close it fast with 1 hand only is safer and faster then having to use 2 hand to open or close it with a lock release. Plus they can never ever close on ur hand while in use.

Microtech has recently came out with a new otf called the hera only in a dagger style so far. With a new pocket clip and goes for $425 on blade hq but they are sold out as of now.
@hvymtlkngedc97053 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have seen it. Now that it's been a few weeks there are a few vendors that have them in stock. Seems to be a Halo style chassis with a dual Fuller's in the blade, It looks like a cool knife and all but that price point seems to be a little steep considering the only real potential upgrade i see on it is that pocket clip the the de-tent ball on the end. I like that they are coming out with new model's though rather than only focusing on themed variants of their production and signature series lines.

Would you recommend the tanto over the dagger for edc ?
@hvymtlkngedc97053 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what your tasks are day to day that you would use it for, I like having the option of a double edge for self defense and it’s great for opening packages/envelopes etc. But if you are looking for a beater knife that you can get down and dirty with single edge tanto offers a little more versatility and the ability to put a thumb on the spine for more control and force. I own 11 microtechs and they are all double edged but this one lol. But they typically are my weekend carry’s and this guy is strictly a work knife. Hope this helps!

Microtech makes the best user OTFs (sorry Guardian Tactical & Hawk Knife Designs). The Ultratech is a great EDC but the UTX-85 is a epic EDC option too. I find myself reaching for my UTX just as much if not more than my Ultratechs. Also, the Microtech tanto is the best edge for utility AND self defense in my opinion. I have some double edge versions but they are just fall short for being a great EDC option. Curious if you have any of the bayonet grinds & how you like those ? Are those a true double edge or is the top a thin false edge?
@hvymtlkngedc97053 жыл бұрын
The Bayonet blade is on my wishlist for sure, I believe that half of the top portion of the blade has an edge and the other half is a thin blade spine. If i ever get the color combo i want i will do a review of that for sure!

@hvymtlkngedc97053 жыл бұрын
@@KaPPy83 They hold up to hard use just fine and are very practical for a wide range of applications. I think the real key to keeping any OTF reliable with daily use is good maintenance. I wanted to test this one out as hard as i could so i never disassembled it. With my other microtechs i take them apart fully and clean them routinely. As long as nothing like a small rock or sand gets caught in between the chassis and the blade slide where it could damage the soft aluminum chassis, eliminating the smooth action of those parts moving back and forth against eachother they should be able to externally take a beating for years. I amsuper stoked that you did pick one up for yourself, they really are an amazing tool! The heretic line is also nice and very underrated!.
