I was a masters student for one year in Finland and I loved it! I would love to come back for work or to do my PhD. This is my dream! I enjoyed Finland so much! I loved this interview and I hope you can do more interviews or make a series on expats from different countries who live and work in Finland! I will definitely look at the website you shared to see what jobs are available.

Great to know about the Indian family! It's interesting how foreigners live in Finland. Also the Filipino community is slowly thriving, there is a Thai-Finnish woman with Filipino upbringing who has an interesting hobby of dumpster diving and is pretty successful because of it (a future collab would be great). Finland day by day is becoming a harmonious melting pot, and most embrace the local culture.

Hi Varpu, I would have been interested to know if this Indian family has learnt the Finnish language. I believe this hasn't been mentioned in the video or have I missed it?! It is essential to learn the language of the country where you live in. Not only for the administrative work that you need to deal with, but also to be able to integrate in the society. To answer your question: no, I would not like to live or work in Finland. I did live there in the past for a while, and I still often travel for vacation in Finland. It's great for vacation! But to live there, not the place to fit my personality. There are many aspects which I do like over there (like the nature, not at all crowded), but also important ones which I don't like (the weather overall, the quality of food, the social life, the fact that Finland's geographical position is kind of isolated; unless you live in Helsinki, it is difficult and expensive to travel anywhere else in Europe or in the world).

I do not believe there was any discussion about their level of Finnish language competency . I am assuming , based on my own experience that their level is basic (survival+) . This meaning that they may be able to meet the level which affords Finnish Citizenship. (However, I have met immigrants who have been able to "game" the system) . Most likely , their professions in IT value communication in English as high or higher than Finnish language. Looks like they lucked out .

Hello from Russia. In such funny times as today, it is especially interesting to learn about the life of people in Finland. And at the same time, I want to attract interest in the history of this country, since I collect coins of the Principality of Finland, when the country was part of the Russian Empire until 1917. I will be glad to hear your opinions under my new video on this topic, and I would like to find like-minded people on the topic from Finland, to see the antique shops of this country. I will be glad!!!

@just42tube 7 ай бұрын
Suomalainen doesn't really mean the language. Suomenkieli is the Finnish language. But if you say "I speak Finnish", it would be "puhun suomea" in Finnish. But as well "puhun suomenkieltä" would be a slightly more formal and clumsy way to express the same meaning. Suomalainen means something from Finland or belonging to Finland.

👍⭐️⭐️⭐️👏 Kiitos tälle videolle. Haluaisin työskennellä ja asua Suomessa for the last part of my career and minun elämäni. Pidän lumia, talven maisenaa, hiljaa metsää ja… kuppia hyvää kahviä. :-) Mutta, minä olen tänään vanha ihminen (a senior), 60 vuotta. Is there in Finland, some opportunity for senior to find a job on the Finland job market? I guess that your country prefers welcoming young couples with child for the Future of Finland.
@just42tube

The Finnish immigration permit system has no upper age limits. But companies do mostly prefer younger employees. Of course there are some jobs and roles in companies where higher age isn't so much an issue. And of course entrepreneurs can come at all ages. Starting a business in Finland and employing yourself is something that older more experienced people could be even better than unexpected younger ones. There are also some people who have moved to Finland after retirement, but I assume it's rare.

@@jean-marcdumas-perrin5324 The usually mentioned age, when finding new employment becomes more difficult, is 50. But that is just generalization about all jobs and careers. It's not the same in all jobs and careers. Companies naturally don't want to invest in people, who are getting close to retirement. But on the other hand many people have most experience and skills at thay age. But it needs to be relevant up-to-date skills and not outdated. But there are exceptions for that too. Knowledge of old systems and old skills have their own niches where they are needed in small volumes but needed.
@just42tube
@just42tube 7 ай бұрын
You mentioned "I guess that your country prefers welcoming young couples..." Country has rules against discrimination. It also has economic realities that economists especially talk about. Both older people and young couples can come with economic stress since they both need public services. Couples tend to have kids, which means more daycare, schools, preschool.... It's an investment from the societies point of view. Parents and kids perhaps contribute to the society enough in the long term and make it sustainable. That is hope. People past 60, if they are healthy and can provide for themselves, don't need so much public services. But at ages beyond 75 it tends to be obvious that they usually start to need a lot of services, which can be very costly to the society. Individual variations are huge. The age "pyramid" in Finland doesn't look like a pyramid. There are more and more elderly people needing health care and elderly care services and less people providing services. That is a difficult trend from the sustainability point of view. These service are already very stretched and in the middle of a major reorganization.

I love finland already! ❤ Moving to helsinki in a few weeks ❤ One question for you guys living there: are you not afraid of the war? I know that finnish army is strong and well equipped, but what are your feelings towards being geographically so close to Russia?
@lemonem15cats
@lemonem15cats 7 ай бұрын
I'm not Finnish, but I studied at the University of Eastern Finland last year (quite close to the Russian border). The international students also had this question. I have the impression that Finnish people are quite rational and organized when it comes to these things. Our administration seemed not to be worried but assured us that the government and university is always assessing the situation and if they become concerned they would keep us informed in case we needed to evacuate. I did not have any worries while living there. It was very calm and safe and I trusted that if things changed they would inform us and make practical decisions to keep us safe. Many buildings (if not all) are equipped with bomb shelters from long ago, so that also made me feel better knowing that there are many places to go in case of an emergency.

The crucial difference is that Finland has drastically higher social cohesion than either the US or the UK; in general, higher cultural diversity = higher social distrust = worse public services. It’s also worth pointing out that the Scandinavian countries typically have low or even 0% business tax rates to offset the impact of their humongous 40 - 60% personal tax rates.
@TuomasLeone
@TuomasLeone 6 ай бұрын
@@MateDrinker33 I don't think there is real evidence that "higher cultural diversity = higher social distrust". Please see the paper sciologists Maria Abascal, of Princeton University, and Delia Baldassari, of New York University have published on this topic. Their findings include, "indicate that only whites report lower levels of trust when they live among out-group members." So perhaps it's not distrust, but prejudical attitudes that are posining the well so to speak. Social cohesion it could be argued does not stem from a lack of diversity, but in fact a strong social support system, that fosters trust.
