well, i am doing around 2k usd per month with only Blender. Not much as for Europe and US, but in my country that is a good income, i can uokeep my family, household, good meals and vacations. The more i do with blender, the better it goes. I am enjoying the work when i can do it when i want and so much as i need, and just chilling, gaming, having time with my son.. I dont have to know maya, i dont have to know 3dsmax, only blender. I just dont need other, because of versatility. the more i work with blender, the far i get and more clients come. Its fun. And pleasing to know that you are a competitive person in your trade. Thats not a software question. Thats more about self motivation for work, eager and communications. Thanks you, Blender. One client is a miniature trader, so some creative things comes along. What leads me to character making, rigging, baking textures. Actually, all work looks like problem solving in any field that related to 3d. Client cames with some bad or tricky situations, and i solve it and payed for that. And its completely okay to be done with blender and provided to clients in fbx/obj/stl formats.

What an inspiring story! I’m an 18 year old freshmen in a community college, but I know I really want to use Blender in some way to make a living one day. Lately, I’ve been struggling with the fear that I’ll somehow mess up and ruin the rest of my life by getting stuck doing something that I don’t love. After hearing your story though, I see now that it’s definitely possible to make a living with Blender...even after quitting a “safe” job. Like you said, it’s a leap of faith. Things may not seem so great at first, but if you stay passionate and dedicated, success may find you yet. Thanks chocofur to bring this up! I'm a industrial designer for 25 years. I have been use Alias for 18 years, also with some other software experience such Rhino, Pro_E(creo) and Solidwork in ID world. One years ago, I was thinking Alias, Rhino(UI is not pretty) are best software for ID. Until I saw Blender 2.79, I was thinking it is pretty cool and of course it is FREE, not like Alias costly. After blender releasing 2.8, it totally blow my mind, not just its functions across most design/creator/artist..but even the small thing of UI design like wireframe mode in 3d views( it just gorgeous). Now, I use blender as full time for concept developments. In Blender, I can spend more time on focusing in design, not like other software, it will need days/weeks to study the shapes modeling. Although, we still need other software to help for transfer to Step(import/export) file for communicate with engineer world. But bottom line is, it still save time at the end. Blender make free world not just money, also mind, Thanks Blender!!

Hey Chung, thank you for your story! I agree with you totally - sometimes you need an extra software to deliver the final product, but there's a myth that Blender simply isn't enough for "professional" work. It is exactly as you've described - a great tool that allows you to save time, money and boost creativity if used wisely. Will you need an extra 3D tools from time to time? Surely yes, but that doesn't make Blender useless or incapable...

Thank you for sharing your story, going freelance is not always a better career choice financially as many people made it out to be. I listened to many Podcasts as well as read blogs about freelancing as artists / designers, they always sell this idea of how freelancing is better than this, better than that but the truth is freelancing is not for everyone. To reaching at least $100K a year, you not only need to be one of the best freelancers but also a entrepreneur. And I think that's what I'm struggling with as well as many fellow artists / designers because we are either bad at doing business or just hate it.
@Chocofur5 жыл бұрын
Hey Nam, I TOTALLY agree with you! Actually I think it also really depends on the point in life you're at. In some age, or life circumstances, a "regular" agency job may be much better fit than freelancing or running small business. It really depends on so many factors and there really is no "secret" formula that will work for everyone...

I remember being a well paid web dev contractor to the government back in the late 1990s. They were using Enterprise Java and Cold Fusion on the backend. I tried to introduce PHP (v3 at the time) and they all laughed at me because it was "free" and open source - therefore cannot be "professional". Of course not many years later, they built facebook on PHP and it became the most widely used web programming language for the server side. So yeah, I think Blender has had a similar journey. Those who use it knew it's potential, but techno-snobbery was a big impediment. It's usually the truly skillful tech people who are immune to techo-snobbery nonsense. It's been a metaphor for life in general - that being more informed is better than being less informed. I notice that when it comes to big issues like politics and even contentious issues like vaccines, the more you know, the more people want to be dismissive - because they are more likely to adhere to NARRATIVE. They see narrative as social acceptance and the primal fear of being separated from the herd kicks in. No pioneers listen to this instinctive fear. They feel the fear and do the other thing anyway.

Honestly I was trying to get into blender for a while now I remember version 2.7 and I hated it cause of the weird and odd controls and I was having a hard time getting used too it. Eventually when 2.8 came out when my friend told me about it I got some excitement seeing how things looked more cleaner and easier to use and how it also became so much more powerful than before I was just amazed that it was still free, eventually I decided to search for tutorials but nothing really seemed to be well explained and most tutorials just went through like creating a certain thing(cough guru). However when I stumbled across your channel and looked at your series I could have sworn that I was dreaming, someone who actually made a easy to follow tutorial for once? I ended up watching all your tutorials and I loved all of them how easy they were to follow and how well you explained everything and the way it was all executed was honestly amazing. absolutely, thank you for doing this video, i am glad you have decided to speak out about your own path and that you can do it with blender, regardless of other software and other advocates of swapping tools to do it successfully, there is another pervasive topic that really grinds on me, if people can afford other things they can afford the other software, and that it's investing in the future by buying the corporate industry software you are investing in the future, and that its not a cost or factor you should ignore, these types of messages are failing people, because that's one perception, its wrong and it props up the industry-standard myths. Its a really important message and needs to be seen more. passion for using something not because of pure fandom, but because of passion to do something with a great free tool to do things you want to do with a swiss army knife of 3D to the point where that in and of itself and the community drive it forward, not some obsessive need to be part of the corporate model of things. but to be creative with what you have available regardless of anything else, and setting targets that are realistic for using Bender while still being competitive for the work you can do with that tool, not getting hung up on what everyone else uses.

Thanks for this video. Just until recently I started to finally dive into Blender like I've never done before. Not only because of the recent release of 2.8 and the great deal of tutorials that accompanied the release, but I always wanted to improve my 3D modeling skills ever since I found out about Blender. This video struck me when it got recommended because I have the same attitude regarding other graphic software. In this case I'm referring to applications like Gimp, Inkscape, Scribus, Krita and what have you. This started when I wanted to invest in some Adobe bundle way back and found out you had to pay much, much more for the English version in Europe than you had to pay in the US of A. This pissed me off big time and since I can be very stubborn, like a lot of artists I guess, decided from then on to only use open source software and support the open source community whenever I can. Not to mention that I very much dislike the subscription model, many software houses use as a business model. Like the one Adobe is using as a business model. For several reasons btw but I'm starting to drift. I just wanted to thank you and finish by telling you I'll definitely start with the tutorials by you/Chocofur referred to in this video, after I have finished doing all present 2.8 tutorials on blender.org. Thanks again, 2 thumbs up & keep up the good work.

What I think Blender Kinda suck currently is when I want to do the human VFX model and I found out two problems. 1. There is no free muscle and skeleton system addon and there is no tutorial to make it manually. The only way I could do was using Shape Key which is not efficient enough to showcase. 2. I just learn that other commercial software has UDIM by default which allows for super high res texturing for closeup shot which is not available yet in Blender. :(

I have a year and half with blender on KZbin, i dont know what im doing wrong but i only get around 3 to 4 subscribers a week, i guess i just dont know what to do with my 3d models or what to do with the experience i have. I try to inovate my 3d models, i will try to do more animations. If anyone want to give some advices or direction i really apreciate since im unimployed and i have 31 years old. Thanks

Yes. Yes you can. It’s not the tool that matters but how you use it. I use blender at my job for rigging and animation.

I came from 3ds max to blender 2.8 and definitely not going back. Transition wasn't that hard due to having previous 3d knowledge. Hard to start something though with a family. Still haven't given up

Thank for your Phoenix and good luck with the transition, you'll make it :-)

I'm working full time with Blender at work right now making some instruction videos for new people in the factory, and promotion videos for the marketing department.. It's definitely possible to make a living with Blender if you happen to be in the right place.
