Supporting our sponsors helps keep us in the workshop and saving more plastic from becoming pollution 🤙🏽 Head to squarespace.com/brothersmake to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code BROTHERSMAKE.
We get lots of suggestions about how we should use solar power in our recycling projects. And whilst our workshop is powered by energy generated from renewables, we thought we'd take this a step further and take our solar panels and panini press to the beach to melt some ocean plastic!
We teamed up with our buddy Oly from Project Planet Earth, who's been doing amazing things to tidy up our coastline. Using only what we found in a little bay we came across, we managed to recycle HDPE on-site using a few tools we brought with us from the workshop.
Solar power and renewables are the future. There's no doubt about it. And it was great to experience this first hand whilst having fun and cleaning the beach at the same time. We hope that watching this video inspires you to do something to help our planet. You could watch some of our tutorial videos and get started melting plastic, or head to your nearest beach, lake, river or park and spend a few minutes cleaning it up.
Thank you for watching, and thank you for supporting what we do 🤙🏽

You’re making a bigger difference than commercial recycling. In fact less than 20% of plastic actually gets recycled via collection commercially. Good job guys teach people to repurpose it themselves way more efficient as well.

So, I am getting an aluminum mold made based on a particular 5 circuit finger labyrinth pattern from two former coworkers. It will be made out of recycled plastic!!! I was asking the Universe for assistance on some of the details and they were presented in your video Melting Ocean Plastic at the Beach using SOLAR POWER, . . . I Love it When A Plan Comes Together😁. When the time comes, I will be making a video and linking it back to this one!!! I am so very, very excited. Thank you for all of your help along the way by encouraging me to do projects similar to your! Will send the link along to you when it is ready.

Have you thought about making long strips that could be used to weave and make bigger receptacles like a laundry basket maybe or a basket to use at the beach when collecting stuff? I’m sure you could use thin strips if they are long enough? Oh and feel free to send me a small fossil I can use in a project 👍🏻 bless up my brothers 👊🏼

Question for Brothers Make: I recently participated in the push for recycled plastic products at my university. We have been in full-swing product production using mainly HDPE (#5) and PP (#2) recycled plastics that we collected on campus and from local places. Our products have included keychain tokens, flower pots, and a bottle opener shaped like our mascot with a metal beak bottle opener. My question is: Is there any way of making, let us say HDPE, food safe after we have collected, cleaned, shredded, and injected the plastic into a mold. I am looking to make some recycled plastic shot glasses but have not yet since I have not found a way to make it food safe after production. Any feedback or direction would be great from you or anyone following the channel would be great! Love the videos! Thank you!

Great video, although a tad green-washy. Someday, a clever group of people will figure out how to manufacture truly sustainable solar panels. Kudos to the ocean cleanup group. I've been looking at the Jackery solar-chargeable battery. Glad to see it holding up fairly well. A future challenge could be to heat the plastic in a solar oven

@Vidchemy
@Vidchemy Жыл бұрын
@@BrothersMake I'm not accusing you of greenwashing, your efforts are far from that. Being at the beach and gushing over using "green" power is the greenwashy part. The solar panels and batteries are encased in petroleum-based plastics, as is the clever tool that determines plastic type. Whether the batteries are lead-acid or NiCd, they won't be easily reclaimed or recycled. Additionally, the wood used to make the paddle is likely fresh wood. Again, not criticizing the efforts or the use of solar energy.
@BrothersMake
@BrothersMake Жыл бұрын
Where I agree that the production of solar panels and battery storage systems is not plastic free (far from it actually), does that disqualify them from use? Just because the systems in place aren’t perfect, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t better. Solar storage systems work in the sense that they remove the need for fossil fuel dependency. But there is absolutely work to do for their end-of-life. Also, the wood we used was all scrap and offcuts from our workshop 🤙🏽🤙🏽
@Vidchemy
@Vidchemy Жыл бұрын
@@BrothersMake Again, I am not critizing the use of solar panels, and pointing out that they are made of plastic is not the same as stating their use should be disqualified, you are putting words in my mouth.

What is y’all’s opinion as far as repurposing the actual plastic bottle itself and not just the lid? Can that be done and safely? Haven’t seen y’all use any plastic bottles yet and wasn’t sure if y’all felt like it wouldn’t work as well or just prefer to use lids as it doesn’t need to be stripped up and cut into little pieces like the plastic bottle would. Let me know, very curious abt y’all’s opinions of how and just in general when it comes to melting the bottle that these lids come from or a way to repurpose them in general.

Hmm. A lot of labor and unusable stuff due to the need to sort... I wonder if, for larger objects, there's a temperature range you could use to melt most of the usual offenders and just tolerate the rest as impurities without burning them or creating harmful nonsense from overheating them? Not near a beach myself, but near a lot of fabricating equipment and some ideas for bulk melting using a heavy solar boiler setup, that theoretically would have enough heat energy to just keep pushing a ton of massed plastic to just about whatever temperature you could need... you guys happen to keep any records of the kinds of plastic you found on the beach?
